Paying 7 for Phaneuf is insanity. Just because that's "market value" doesn't justify it. I can get a $95 8oz steak that is grain fed blah blah blah and it's market value.
Just because someone else is stupid enough to pay for something doesn't make it a good deal.

We would suffer without him but locking him in @ 7 for 7 or even 6 at 6 would create FAR more suffering.

Give me two of those with cheese on top please. And a double shot and a beer.

Phaneuf has given up only 9 goals against at ES. For comparison's sake:

Chara-18
Suter-17
PK Subban-23
Weber-24
Karlsson-33
Pietrangelo-19

And none of them plays the tough minutes Phaneuf is given on a nightly basis.

7x7 is awesome, it's gonna look like a steal for the first 4-5 years and maybe even longer depending on how he wears down. Shorter term would be nice but I don't really thinks that's possible and realistically, Phaneuf's earned every cent of that $49 million.

Phaneuf could have gotten much more in the UFA market.

Left money on the table, as did Kessel.

Who is going to play ahead of him then"? Because clearly if Dion shouldn't be signed for that price, you'd let the captain walk right? Don't bother mentioning trades either because if he's so crap who would want him, right? So letting him go is your only option and for that, who comes in and takes over his spot? Who eats up all those minutes on defence?

Your opinions are suffering.

This is an absolutely mind boggling stat. I don't even know how this is possible. And then you have people saying crap like Dion is no better than a top 30 d-man and stuff like that and you wonder - where do these people come from? Do they ever actually watch a game?

Well your stats are interesting, I find your last statement mindboggling, really. All those dmen play tough minutes every night that is why they are top dmen. For the record I believe Phaneuf is a top flight dman, reagardless of what others say, would love him on the Bruins.

Wow. That was bad

So does Phaneuf also get to keep his C?

Not only does he get to keep his C, but it will now stand for c ock. As in 'c ock of the walk'. A rooster patch will be sewn on both sides of his jersey.

Instead of spewing generic ********, why don't you go go ahead and name the top 8 cup contending teams, and name 2 dmen better than Dion on every team.

Go ahead and try. You will fail hard as I can think of two teams where he would be the #1 off the bat.

STL-Pietrangelo,Boumeester
CHI-Seabrook,Keith
PHX-OEL,Yandle

MTL-Subban,Markov

Its a stat, and its proven that Phaneuf plays the toughest minutes in the NHL. And its not close either

i agree with this, our Dcore would look terrible with him, but having 7+ tied up in a guy who might not be our best Dmen in 2-3 years could hurt the team badly.

edit: looking down the road when Rielly and Gardiner wanna be signed what are they going to ask for? 6+ mill and we will just give it to them,
Neither of those players have warranted anything close to that kind of speculation.
If they do, then we're in damn good shape as a team.

I am not a big stat guy, but there is a stat called quality of competition where Phaneuf is always at the top. Chara usually plays the same tough competition but the others on the list above are middle of the pack: http://www.extraskater.com/players/qual_comp

If you'd take those d-men in bold over Phaneuf, I would advise you to see a psychiatrist.

Phaneuf is better then most of those that you listed..

I'd take Phaneuf over..

Bouwmeester, Yandle, Voynov, Seidenberg, Letang, Edler, Green, Carlson, Carle and I don't think Hedman is any better than Phaneuf as of right now. Hedman might be better in 2years, but today he is not.
