Well on the positive this is a prime time to try and get him re-signed. Putting pucks into his own net nightly, team can't win, getting suspended, etc. Should knock down his demands a bit.

Certainly not a good few weeks for Phaneuf. He's definitely played some of his best hockey prior to the past few weeks. I suppose it just depends where this team is going. Still barely conscious that this guy is the captain and not all that attached.

Certainly value in keeping him though, so whatever happens is probably fine.

Yeah, you said a dumb thing, conveniently after Phaneuf gets blamed for a terrible pass by Raymond.

Just shut this thread for now. It only get bumped when Phaneuf "makes a mistake" and doesn't look friggin perfect.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...

The way man fans act, they could probably jump to the other side of the fence, complain that the other side is greener jump over again and start complaining all over again. An infinite number of times.

A prime Lidstrom would get ripped to shreds in Toronto.

7M for Dion is fair. But the cap term can't exceed 5 years. We need to trade this guy this season. We must make him as attractive to other GM's as possible. Unfortunately Dion is just not the right guy for this Team. We need to move forward. Lots of better players throughout the years teams have walked away from. Just because he's the best we have today - doesn't mean we can never do better.

Meh, re-signing him to a big ticket deal is like what the Blue Jays always did with their mediocre stars. Feeling completely ambivalent about keeping him on board.

I am firmly in the lets move him camp. I do not believe he was the right choice as a captain and do not feel that he is a player we want long term here. His role on the pp should not exist as we currently have better options. We need to think long term and in my opinion long term he is not a player we will want to move forward with as he will want to play the same role as he currently does and he should not be playing the role he current does. No more first unit PP and a reduced role when we are down a goal late in games. He would not accept the role we would need him to play if we are ever going to compete for the cup ....so it is better in my opinion to move him now when his value is high rather then wait when. If we sign him to a long term 7 year deal at 7M per we will be stuck with him.

My honest opinion is that he is not anywhere near the elite level under pressure as seen in the playoffs and now when he is feeling the pressure of wanting to make Team Canada. He has been exposed...and his value questioned!

Me too. I'd hate to think what we'd be without Phaneuf, but we've had him and Kessel for 4 years and we've played in one playoff series. I could make a long list of convincing excuses for that and talk about them being a young team that should get better, but I have a pretty hard time convincing myself that locking up this core of players for the forseeable future is the way to go.

Fortunately or unfortunately, he just has a very dominating presence. As long as he is here, this team is unquestionably his team, and I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that.

For those that want to move Dion, what kind of value do you expect to get? The fact that he's a FA immediately affects the overall package you can get.

They think you move him for multiple #1's and sign a Shea Weber with the money.

In reality you get a B level prospect and a late 1st and 2nd and have $6.5 mil to sign UFA defencemen which means you overpay for a 2nd(4.5 per) and 3rd(2 per) pairing guy and then cry about the gaping hold on a D where Franson and Gunnar are now the #1 and #2.

It's a good move if you want to draft high the next 3 June's.

Haha, all it took was one bad game. Not surprised.

I know, and than they forget about the great games he has had.

I am starting to feel people are jealous that we have a number 1 d man for once, and they don't want one.

that's why all these dion haters come aboard

You all act so brilliant yet see nothing wrong with getting in the head of your teams best defenceman after a mistake or 2.

Clearly that method worked so well with McCabe after he signed.

It's embarassing how this fan base acts when it gets convinced that a player is overpaid....even if that player performs to a level above the rest.

We've already once created an environment where the players revolted against management and refused to allow them to be traded....might as well make that same mistake again....and make no mistake that the fans are as much to blame as the management giving the contracts.

I don't even understand how this logic works.

You do realize that a team is more than just two players right?

Pay him whatever it takes to keep Elisha Cuthbert associated with this team.
