I think this is missing the point. We shouldn't be subjected to this crap at all. There are way too many ads. There shouldn't be anything like this in the first place. Ads on top of ads, this is just ridiculous. We shouldn't support this at all. f***ing greedy f***ers.

So you want no ads at all? I think that's a little extreme, and never going to happen. The digital ads look pretty much the same as the physical ads except the digital ads are way cleaner. They have a few glitches to work out, mainly the gates opening, and where the glass obstructs the boards in the close corners. Other than those 2 spots the ads look the same as the physical ads.

I was watching a kings game last night and they weren't using the digital ads, It took me a solid 10 minutes to notice that it was different.

That's a good thing... Had the ads been on, it would've taken you a solid 10 seconds to have your attention drawn to this boards.

No I thought they were the digital ads. I think that if they used the digital ads properly that they would be no different than the physical ads.

the ads are so bad and very distracting the black text on white background is just dumb none of the NHL people who do this ever hear of the Moire effect on tv clearly

the worst ads are those ugly ass banner ads they put on the glass...especially the ones behind the net...so freaking annoying...same with the ads on the ice just inside the bluelines.... those are all much worse than the digital ads...at least with those there is actually more whitespace since they only show 1 ad at a time.

Can send emails to these people too about our displeasure of the product.

Make the digital ads on the boards like 144 fps. How can they still in 2022 have something at 20 fps or something, it hurts the eyes so much to watch.

I'm going to keep banging on about this garbage until it goes away, sorry.

Ignoring your baffling objection to removing all advertising, I don't understand how people keep saying they don't notice anything. Those glitches you're referring to happen all the time!

That stanchion over Mete's numbers was glitching out the entire game. And it wasn't consistently edited out, it was constantly changing and incredibly distracting. Mete's numbers have also clearly been mangled badly and part of his left shoulder is missing. The blurring of edges when players are against the boards is awful and again it's not consistent. Sticks, legs, arms disappear from one frame to the next. I don't know how you can possibly not notice.

The font on the board ads looks completely wrong, the resolution is crap, and it's obvious that the shading is unnaturally constant. That's when they're completely static, so never mind how distracting it is when they start some godawful animation during play.

The NHL is losing a lot of viewers from this amateurish appearance. It looks like the kind of thing you’d see in an ESPN Ocho broadcast of an ultimate frisbee league.

The Rangers game a few nights ago was the worst I've seen. So much glitching. People could serious suffer seizures from this stuff. It's embarrassing.

I just came from checking up on the Leah Hextall thread for some entertainment (sadly not much action lately), and it's interesting because a big piece of the conversation there is how she got the job because of nepotism and how much of that there is in this league. The "old boys club" idea.

Why do I bring this up here? Because a lot of us can agree, I think, that the NHL has always seemed like a sometimes poorly-run league in some ways, sort of bush league business, which we can see in things like player safety but I think also plays a role in decisions like these ads.

The comparison to the NFL is interesting because as much as I've soured on that league over the years, they do run it like a very serious business, partly because they have a lot of really serious businesspeople running the show. The NHL doesn't have as many of those people because, like with many smaller businesses, they hire from within--people they know, that sort of thing (the college where my wife works, for instance, would be an example--so many people at the school are alums, the trustees are local businessmen or accountants, and they simply don't understand how a college is supposed to work, so it leads to all sorts of unexpected problems).

And so the NHL ends up having this sort of echo chamber where they don't get enough outside voices or perspectives and end up doing the same thing poorly over and over again (like player safety) or making short-sighted decisions like with these digital ads that damage the product long-term--and really, to how much financial benefit considering they already were making ad money and apparently spent a ton over the years to test out this digital ad program?

I love this game, and the league has a great history, but sometimes I can't help but shake my head at the stupidity of people who have been in positions of prominence over the years.

It's not just the digital board ads (those are really distracting, especially when they animate) but if you look at the ad creep in general over the past few years it's pretty jarring how aggressive the NHL has been with it.

New ads in the ice behind the goalie, digital ads on the glass, digital ads at the top of the offensive zone, ads on the helmets, ads on the jerseys, and now digital ads on the boards that animate and change every 30 seconds

It's probably going to get worse too unless the ratings tank and they're forced to reverse course. Even then you're hoping they just don't add even more ads to make up for the loss in revenue

Ratings are already down due to the price and accessibility of the regional sports networks.
They're trying to make up the revenue in any way possible.

They're forgetting something though. Pushing away from exposure means not creating new fans over time, which eventually means less eyes on the ads, which means eventually companies not wanting to pay for ads that not many eyes will see.

NFL is on free TV for the local market, every week. Easy and cheap access for everyone. Constantly generating fans.

The NHL in the 80's jumped on the cable bandwagon and went to PPV when teams played at home, only played on free TV while on the road.

The result? The NHL struggled big time in getting exposure, during a time when the TV audience was mostly held hostage to very few channels and exposure should have been very easy. Now they're making the same mistake all over again.

I used to watch my team as often as I could... if I wasn't working and the Wild were playing, no way in hell would I miss it. Now i go to more games than I watch on TV... simply because of the price wars Sinclair has had with providers (I wasn't going to change providers every 6 months because they kept dropping Bally's), and now because of the INSANE monthly price of their streaming network (not paying $20/month to watch 2-3 games a month that I could match my schedule to in the first place).

Sports fans have been taken for granted here, and they're pushing things to the breaking point. At some point you just have to say it's not worth it and move on.

Can everyone just admit a board ad has not enticed anyone to make a purchase, and we can just do away with them all already?
I can somewhat handle the static ads that change every 30 seconds, but the moving ads are making me watch less and less hockey, as they give me a headache, and the ads are having the opposite of the intended purpose with me, as I see those companies in a negative light now. I have no idea how the league can possibly think that fans watching the game actually want to see flashing signs during the game. Really is mind boggling, but I guess it's all about money, fan experience be damned.

I don’t care about ads on jerseys and helmets, but these digital board ads are awful.

I think they’re actually giving me a headache.

I understand the need for marketing as much as anyone, and I get it, but they need to be better executed.

I may actually limit the amount I watch live games with how bad these are.
