I don't get the outrage over gambling ads when people are fine with all of the ads promoting alcoholism which is far more destructive to society and kills many people.

It's the frequency of them along with the fact that they've crept into the broadcast themselves, such as giving updated gambling odds.

In regards to the boards ads, it seems certain broadcasts do it far better than others. Watching the Rangers games I barely notice them, but whenever I watch Sportsnet games they are horrible.

I mean, for one thing...Alcohol is actually delicious and enjoyable.

But on a more serious note...the alcohol ads are not integrated into the actual game/broadcast itself like the gambling stuff.

It's a very different sort of experience to see a little Molson ad tucked away somewhere, a "brought to you by...", or a commercial during a break or whatever. It's another thing with the gambling integration, where you're being constantly updated on gambling odds and encouraged to bet on all sorts of things every other stoppage in play and half the intermission coverage. In addition to the "normal" obnoxious commercials. The gambling thing has come roaring in to where it's not just peripheral, normal advertising anymore, it's starting to feel like gambling is the point of the sport, and the broadcast. It all revolves around providing you coverage of the "betting event". Which is really messed up and sucks a lot of joy out of the sport.

TBH the only ones that really bother me while I'm watching games are the adds with moving black things like tires or pucks. My eyes get distracted and then have to catch up when I realize its not actually anything in the game. Other than that they are fine and not worth all the hand wringing going on over them

I would think going from no ads at all to ads is a far bigger jump that using the same ad space digitally instead of just showing what’s physically there…

Your sentiment isn’t much more than being irritated that things change, as they always have. It’s completely inevitable within industrialized society.
I'm not talking about just this. I'm talking about society in general. But it's neither here nor there. It's no need to get into an argument about it, especially since it wasn't directed at you. I don't know what's your motivation.

This is huge and has happened a lot faster than even I, already a cynic about this issue, would have anticipated.

In case anyone didn't read that Twitter thread before (because it's on Twitter or something like that), here it is turned into an article on one of my favorite sites, UniWatch, with some comments from readers afterward that are interesting because they're not just from hockey fans: A Deep Aesthetic Analysis of the NHL’s Digital Board Ad Glitches

Really concise and well written - better format than Twitter.

Amazing that it took some random guy on Twitter to do this type of article/analysis versus a sports site such as The Athletic.

Also interesting to point out the effect the ads are having on the audio quality - I've certainly noticed this at times with Devils games in the past where it seemed like the audio was ahead of the play at times:

Would be awesome if the NHL were to turn these off for the playoffs as the author suggests, but I'm sure that's just a pipe dream at this point.

I have no problem with gambling adds and digital adds being bombarded.
Now if I was paying to watch games yeah i'd be livid.

Try consuming the content for free and it makes complaining much less likely

In Canada, we get live gambling segments between whistles on hockey night in Canada.

I can handle all the ads to the point that they are a nuisance rather than a deterrent, but the betting overload is the worst.

both suck but like the gambling ads are literally baked into the product

nobody telling you to take a shot if the Red Wings have more than two goals in the third period lol

Spot on. That has been Bettman's method for years. Simply lie about how fans actually love it.

He's been doing it since the clutch and grab era, insisting that fans didn't have an issue with it.

Yes Gary, having the puck and players disappear into the boards adds more excitement to games and will definitely attract new fans whose biggest complaint already is "I can't follow the puck!"

It's no wonder this guy gets booed everywhere he goes. The balls on this prick to actually try to spin this as "no, fans actually LIKE these new distracting animated ads and seeing players and pucks routinely disappear into them" is just astounding. It's a child-like mentality of "maybe if I make the lie really, really ridiculous they might believe me".

lol games with digital ads are more watchable?

That's just a f***ing lie and we all know it. Who the f*** is he polling, the people that buy those ads?

Actually, yeah, that's probably who he polled, isn't it.

You know what I've found more watchable? The NBA. I've watched less hockey this season than ever. Sucks, but I'm enjoying the competition a lot more than I expected.

The ads are really a huge distraction for me for whatever reason. Really frustrating. I didn't expect to be bothered by them all that much, but man. I am.
