Digital ads on boards replacing traditional ads

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. I went to the Rangers game opening night but watching the game back on ESPN and through highlights I found the ads to be horrendous. That being said, I watched on MSG last night and I barely noticed the ads and would say it didn't impact my viewing and that's from someone that despises these things. There were a few glitchy components (near side glass stanchion disappearing and the bench doors opening and closing) but beyond that, it really didn't bother me. There's kinks they need to work out but if it was anything like last night's game then I'm okay with it. Maybe it was the types of ads used on the national feed that drove me nuts.

What's so shameful about this is that the league--the owners and Bettman as their puppet--are effectively placing advertising above the game itself.
This is whats really sickening for me. No mitigation on my take here - this shit is despicable and sacrilegious. Tired of people going all "aww boo hoo its not so bad, its just a little ad, its not so distracting, its so small and little, you little baby."

That's not really the point, is it? Abiding by this rhetoric has gotten us to this point where the advertising is obviously, egregiously, disgustingly awful and distracting with stupid f***ing betting and gambling, life ruining, odds every 5 minutes, kit-kat sponsored powerplays, honda sponsored divisions, and digital ads that quite literally make people ill.

But really, the thing that I really, truly, within my gut hate about this shit is that it's cynical and spiteful towards the game itself. When you put an ad on a player's Jersey, you're branding them. In every sense. They are no longer a player representing their team. They are a player representing a brand. When they skate around the ice, they are no longer just hockey players. They are billboards. There is an implicit admission on the part of the league that they only partially want you to pay attention to the game, to view the game on your screen as hockey, and to watch it to enjoy it for what it is. They do not want you to just be a fan. That's not why they're putting the games on TV. They want you to be a market, your attention sold to the highest bidder. They want at least one part of you to be a pairball of eyes for a product. It simply, irrevocably, taints the game and its spirit.

what's really absurd that with these digital ads there are ads on top of boards ads that are already there. Which makes no sense. It is all being driven by greed. And the ad patches on the jerseys are an abomination too, and looks very amateurish. Maybe North Korea should just nuke us all after all? The commercialization is sickening.

I have some issues with my eyesight and the digital board ads have given me some problems with focus, blur (especially when they change). It's distracting as well and it's not quite as easy to watch hockey anymore. Not that it's totally intolerable yet but there were moments for me where it was uncomfortable and I had to reorient.

I like hockey and I want to watch it, and wish the league cared about the game itself being easy to watch and follow. Especially for people who have problems with their eyesight.

there has to be some kind of petition we can start to get rid of this crap. It's horrible and really takes away from the viewing experience. the NHL has hurt its TV product substantially with this. i got a massive f***ing headache while watching the Rangers game last night from these stupid board ads. it just doesn't look natural, the fact that they dont have the natural shadows on the boards really messes with my eyes.

I feel like if they were smarter about this we wouldn't care but it feels poorly done. Like change the adds during commercials, intermission, during faceoffs when you don't see them as much. Like then people would barely see the changes.

When did ads start appearing on the boards? I seem to recall that Le Collisee (sp?) up in QC not having them well into the 1990s.

According to an article posted in this thread they first started in 81.

I haven't really noticed them, but the glitching from the clip in that yahoo article is terrible and the NHL should feel bad about it. If they're distracting that many fans, they should go away, end of (the ads, not the fans).

Seems earlier than I remember, thanks!

For those wondering if this will ever end, no it won't. You have to keep finding ways to make more and more money every year/quarter. You lose the game of capitalism if you don't.

Personally I'm waiting for the 4th commercial break.

The best thing we can all do is stop watching the game on TV. If viewership goes down because of this, then you'd think it would be reconsidered. The question it, can we do it or is everyone going to just take it. History shows everyone is just going to complain about it but continue to watch, which the NHL is banking on. I shut the Isles game off after the 1st because I couldn't stand it.

Don't hold back guys, this is pretty much all we can do about it and it only takes a couple of minutes to type something up.

The man behind all this nonsense: [email protected]
It appears the email for Keith that was floating around might be off. The one on rocket reach was [email protected] so there's a chance some guy just assumed it was Firstname.Lastname and threw it out there. Either way, he's the one that spearheaded this and deserves most of the blowback. Guy came straight from the NFL so chances are he's never even played hockey once in his life. Neither email bounced but chances are [email protected] is the correct one.

1. Everybody do a bunch of Google searches for white paint
2. Targeted ads are white paint
3. Problem solved
Knowing how things go, I'd expect them to have the boards turned all black for this and then have a nice in-action action shot of animated paint spilling all over it--as the ad bounces off the boards where it's supposed to be and instead covers up the on-ice play.

Come to think of it, watching the Rangers' broadcast feed tonight, I'm thinking the NHL is going to be subjected to some lawsuits if they don't start to put seizure warnings on the screen before games. Shit's getting worse with each passing day, it seems.

The 60+ mins of game play only makes up less than half of the actual broadcast. Would it be asking too much to have this advertising crap follow the same formula as the arena music? Ie turn it the F off during the play.
The NFL has tons of ads but you'll never see them slathered on the field like this. This is costing the NHL money because people are turning off the games.
