Schmid is the heir apparent, but he’s not the goalie of today.

The team needs more certainty, not less. Which means playing Vanecek and Blackwood enough to know if one or both cannot do the job in the playoffs.

Schmid takes the net if one / both of the current goalies are incapable - no chance he takes over just because of a hot streak in March.
IMO next season you run Vitek and Schmid, and sign a vet #3 for Utica that can be called up if we have an injury.

If Schmid continues with his high level play, you have give more games.

Love the idea. Hate the price.

As a US, out of market, Devils fan, ESPN+ is way cheaper.

The bundle with ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu is half the price.

Is this meant for in-market who don’t have access? I don’t get it.

Msg are trying to create an offering that can serve cord cutters, but they cant piss off their cable company partners. For the immediate future, MSG will still make most of their revenue from carriage fees from the cable companies. Meaning, if they price too low, they run the risk of the cable companies saying they are inducing cord cutting - therefore creating blowback for Msg.

That means they have to price high enough that most current cable subscribers wouldn’t see this offering as attractive. Meaning that cord cutters will not see this as attractive.

Which leads them to $30 / mo.

If management had balls, they’d attempt to carve out a new model for the RSN. But instead they are just being reactive.

Sucks to work in places like that.

I agree - you sign a guy who can be backup or AHL. But, I think Schmid still needs to prove himself in camp. Schmid should need to win the job.

One reason is that the guy the Devils sign probably will have to clear waivers to be sent down. And that’s of course what torpedoed the Devils last year with Wedge.

Speaking of next year’s goalies, what are the chances Blackwood is back?

He’s actually got a reasonable QO and probably has created some trade value this year.

I don’t hate the idea of going into camp with him, Schmid and Vanecek battling for the two spots. If Schmid wins a spot, trade one of the other two.

Yeah, but it sort of kills the offer, they should allow for an out of market option at $5-$10/month.

I can’t get MSG through cable, I’m not a customer who cable would be at risk of losing.

So the result of this stupidity is that, I can’t get MSG through, cable, won’t pay what amounts to the same price as NFL Sunday Ticket for one team that I’m paying for essentially $4/month for the entire league.

Instead of getting $10/month from me (which I would actually pay). They get nothing.

This is a product aimed at no one.

Dumb.

Doesn’t ESPN+ work for you?

I know you’ll miss the couple of NHL network games, but otherwise it’s the same, no?

Actually, I wonder if the ESPN deal is why msg can’t create an out of market offering. There may be some exclusivity given to ESPN in the contract.

I do think people are jumping ship on Sharangovich a little quickly. I don't know if it's hangover from thinking he would be in the Meier trade, but he is still a useful player. I guess it's easy to hate on streaky 3rd line scorers when they're cold.

Yep, you nailed it.

Would you be surprised if he starts producing on a 3rd line with Palat and Haula? I certainly wouldn't.

I know he's well off pace from last year but the guy has 12 goals while getting 0 powerplay time and has become a pretty decent PKer alongside Nico.

Bringing Meier into the fold should slot Rango into the spot that he should be able to thrive in.

I don’t want to trade Sharangovich, I get that he won't be here long term most likely but he can be brought back for cheap, and I can see him improving next year as he learns how to sleep with a newborn.

Sharangovich can score and can literally be brought back on a one year deal for very cheap if the FO thinks that's the best path forward, there really aren't any UFAs that can score for which is true. Closest is maybe Tatar. He's got value to the organization and shouldn't be moved unless it's a clear hockey trade / contract win.

Besides, we always seem to talk about that but do other contracts really affect negotiations at all? It’s whatever here because Pastrnak is a clear level above, but it’s worth asking.

I mean, I'm not totally sure about that. Pastrnak is an MVP candidate level of player right now. Sure, it might reset the market a bit but Pastrnak is a level ahead.

True...I knew Pastrnak was really good, but just looking at his stats...

42 goals already this season, so he'll likely break his previous high of 48 (in 70 games).

He's also averaged 44.6 goals and 92.1 points (per 82 games) over the past 7 seasons, while largely being healthy and is still just 26 years old (turns 27 in May).

Yeah, well worth that contract.

They do. They’re used as the basis for negotiation by both sides. I think this is actually good for NJ. Few would argue that Pastrnak is worth a $2-3 million premium over Bratt and Meier based on production.

Absolutely. And I love Bratt and Meier, but Pasta is just on another level. As I said, 8.5-ish gets it done for both of them.

This contract just makes me grateful we have Jack at 8mil for 7 years after this one lol. In 7 years the cap should be WAYYY higher, thankfully.

I take it that you mean that few would argue against the fact that Pasta is worth 11ish and Bratt/Meier are worth about 8.5-9 based off production? Agreed. As tou said, I don’t think a lot of people would argue against that. Pasta has just been that guy for years.

I think Sharangovich’s value is redundant. Boqvist last night showed he can add value to the team using his speed on the forecheck and to win races to the puck

So with Larkin signing yesterday and Pasta today, are we next with Bratt/Meier?
