I'm not interested in arguing with anyone in bad faith so much as I am interested in putting the facts out there. Nico has been excellent for the past month and for the majority of the season.

Nico is gonna be parading the Cup around the ice one day and the only thing Jim will be posting about is how much it sucks that we didn't get the next Gretzky with the 1st overall 6+ years ago.

I always said the only problem I had with Nico’s contract was it was for only 7 years and not 8.

Pretty sure I was right about that too.

I wouldn’t worry about this. I get BIG “Devil for life” vibes from Nico and I’m sure management feels the same.

Nico’s shot rate blowing up while his shooting percentage stayed high has been great. He’s really owning his own offense this year.

This is also over a recent stretch where a lot of important players and secondary scoring have hit a wall.

Palat is pointless in 7, Haula is pointless in 6, Tatar, Sharangovich and Mercer all have 1 point in their last 5.

Bratt has 5 goals and 0 assists in his last 9 games, and those goals came in 2 games. Jack has only 1 goal in his last 11 games (but still 7 points).

It's what makes blowing off any negativity thrown Nico's way this season quite easy Even when he's had his own valleys over the course of the year, he's come out of them strong and with prolonged periods of productive play.

I have no objection to saying that Makar is a clear number one from that class. That said, as others have noted, NJ isn't likely much, if at all, better with him. As I said before, it's a team building exercise, no one player is above it. If they can play their roles well they are going to be successful as a team.

What did you think that Nico was going to turn into when he was drafted? I have to know. Did you believe any/all of the scouting reports that basically said he'd be what he turned into now?

Like I said, if you thought he was going to be this 100+ point per year generational player, that is a YOU problem...not a Nico problem.

I'm not nor ever have bitched about not getting anyone from that draft...I don't really care what others have accomplished I just am disappointed that the organizations first ever #1OA is closer to Travis Zajac than McDavid.

It like all the kids opening cool Christmas presents and when we tear open the package it's socks and underwear.

Virtually everyone in the NHL is closer to Zajac than McDavid. That's not a realistic measuring stick.

For the record, the best thing about this years team is the number of players who have lifted the team up in various points of the season. Bratt, Jack, Nico, Dougie, Dawson, Vitek, Siegs, Marino, even the 4th line at the beginning of the season. This is the most important thing that makes a team successful, its depth.

We need to enjoy what we’re watching, it’s only just the beginning.

I once again suggest a past draft thread so whenever someone wants to talk about this year in relation to drafts from 3+ years ago we can suggest they take it over there.

And nobody would ever use that, all the discussions would just start here anyway and multiply five pages in two hours like with the goaltending thread. You guys can’t stay on topic anymore than you can avoid getting triggered by nonsense while the team is fighting for first.

The Nico being less than an MVP candidate hurting the franchise was at least a theoretical discussion when the team was losing, it’s a complete waste of time and angst now when he’s a key player in a possible team record setting season.

I definitely think Nico is closer to Travis Zajac than Connor McDavid, but that's more indicative of the level McDavid is on than Nico not being better than Zajac.

If every first overall pick was Connor McDavid then the allure of McDavid would be nothing. He's that special because he's the exception not the norm. Most first overall picks are in the mold of Hischier where they're PPG players but not record breaking. Hischier in the RNH category of first overalls imo. Very good but he won't destroy the stat sheet nightly (granted RNH is having a marvelous season this year with EDM)

He's obviously my favorite player. But I'm just not going to take the bait and get into this discussion with someone yet again.
