As I recall, Jim preferred Patrick too :naughty:

@JimEIV correct me if I’m wrong.
For the most part this is true. But as time got closer to the draft the health concerns really worried me. Health and a seeming lack of progression from the previous year. I wasn't an ardent supporter of anyone in that draft.

Are you still bitching about not getting Makar?

He was drafted 4th my man. This is an imaginary problem only in your head.

You’re the guy that wanted to trade Nico for winger. Oh, what great heights would we be with Laine right now.

You started a thread on Main Trade Board (last year I think?) trying to trade Nico for a winger and it was just a parade of people pointing out how nonsensical a move that is.

You either won’t admit the obvious value of Nico or centers (to win a dumb internet debate) or you don’t know the value of him or centers.

Neither is a good look.

You can try to turn this into Makar vs Nico, in hopes of gaining a foothold in your meaningless internet debate over this, but you’re wrong about Nico. That’s the fundamental truth at the heart of this.

Makar vs Nico, Pettersson vs Nico, sobbing over other 1OAs… that’s just handwaving.

I'm not nor ever have bitched about not getting anyone from that draft...I don't really care what others have accomplished I just am disappointed that the organizations first ever #1OA is closer to Travis Zajac than McDavid.

It like all the kids opening cool Christmas presents and when we tear open the package it's socks and underwear.

We aren’t where we are without Dougie, it’s nearly impossible to be a top team without getting major production from your defense.

Forwards can’t carry the offense.
Stats back this up big time. Every high scoring team in league has a dman on 50+ or even higher pace*. As well as a couple other guys who are no slouches moving the puck either, even if they're not putting up tons of points.

Edmonton traded theres in Barrie but they still have Bouchard, Nurse, Ekholm who are all above average and a youngster in Broberg

I once again suggest a past draft thread so whenever someone wants to talk about this year in relation to drafts from 3+ years ago we can suggest they take it over there.

It’s the same stupid concern trolling nonsense over and over.

You haven’t bitched about not getting Makar?

Ok then, you only endlessly mention him when whining about how drafting Nico made you super sad.

Very different. I get it.

I think that’s partly due to 2 trends in the game.

1) Teams generally have more offensive defenseman now which leads to more chances for defensive points both for and against.

2) Teams appear to dump less and try to score on the rush more often which increases the chance an offensive defenseman will be involved in the play.

I haven’t looked around for numbers on this but that’s what my gut is thinking.

There were two players taken after our 2017 36th pick who are offensively good today (if we took Makar 1st); Batherson and Robertson

Not much great forward talent 2018 ourside top-4

2019 nobody better than Jack

So in reality we ended up with two of the best ~10 forwards from 2017-2019. But hey - at least we'd have Makar am I right??

I definitely think Nico is closer to Travis Zajac than Connor McDavid, but that's more indicative of the level McDavid is on than Nico not being better than Zajac.

No I haven't...I might have used his name as a contrast to what we got.... meaning a superstar vs a glorified plug...but I am not saying we should have drafted Makar or anyone else...

I'm saying it sucks to get a defensive center with the organizations first ever #1OA. That's pretty much it. It's not even nuanced

I can't get on anyone for leaning towards Patrick in that draft year, I was one of them. The thought was that he had been the favorite for well over a year to be #1 at that point and he was already pretty much NHL sized at the time of the draft.

The injury concerns were always there, but no one could have foreseen what was going to come for him. I feel awful for the kid and hope he can get back to playing at some point. Would be a great redemption story.

For too many reasons to count, I'm thrilled we went with Nico. I've already mentioned in past threads that he's one of my favorite people to don our logo since I've been a fan. He does absolutely everything you want from a player to win a game, and clearly is experienced beyond his years to be able to shoulder the leadership role at such a young age. He is my favorite current player on the squad.

And this "leader" stuff is pure nonsense....

Yeah he's a leader as long as Jack is putting up 1.25 PPG. During the lulls or any other time not so much.

Uh-oh, people are having too much fun teasing about this nonsense so we’ve resorted to name calling like “glorified plug” to try and get people arguing over semantics.

I forget who nailed it, you’re the kid who burst into crying fury fit when his parents got him a SuperNintendo instead of Sega Genesis.

And was still bitching about it 7 years later apparently.

You’re disappointment has been duly noted. This is sports, people have emotional reactions to all sorts of things.

You don’t have logical argument for any of this though, and keep saying the same random things.

That’s fine. We’ll be over here appreciating the incredibly talented top line center having a fantastic year as one of our key core players and Captain.

The guy who does that while being a super sweet, impossibly nice, ridiculously hardworking, hard-nosed, battling with the boys, awesome dude who loves to hockey and is signed for 4 more years.

I always said the only problem I had with Nico’s contract was it was for only 7 years and not 8.

Pretty sure I was right about that too.

3rd line drink stirrer I say. A fresher Haula at best!

And curse you psychos for engaging this topic yet again. Save this crap for the summer.
Do you even know when Haula was drafted 14 years ago????

I don’t care how much drink stirring is happening, I care about the things that matter.
