And nobody would ever use that, all the discussions would just start here anyway and multiply five pages in two hours like with the goaltending thread. You guys can’t stay on topic anymore than you can avoid getting triggered by nonsense while the team is fighting for first.

The Nico being less than an MVP candidate hurting the franchise was at least a theoretical discussion when the team was losing, it’s a complete waste of time and angst now when he’s a key player in a possible team record setting season.
But it would make it more fun to have something to point at showing how silly the discussion is.

It’s sillier that you guys invited the discussion in the first place, preemptively bringing up all the old Nico takes as a way of railroading a discussion after a general point was made about scoring being up this year (really the last couple) when celebrating three guys hitting 30+.

Instead of coming back with someone has a warped POV on one topic so nothing they say can ever be taken seriously some of you should have said, nice - scoring is up and the season isn’t over yet. Maybe they all hit forty by the end and that’s the new thirty anyway.

Can Dougie get 13 points in the next 12 games and beat Stevens’ record of most points by a D-man in franchise history?

I gotta give some members of this board credit. They fill a niche that I am missing in terms of sports talk hot takes for the Devils. Think Mike Francessa callers or, if you know Boston sports, Felger and Masarotti. Sometimes I just want something to distract me during the workday, and I don't want actual intelligent discussion - I want absolutely unhinged attempts at trolling/comedy. NYC and Boston fans have many of these types of callers, but you can never hear it about the Devils.

Someone should take the worst offenders from this board and turn it into a weekly podcast.

So you’re more interested in the 9 game goal-less sample than the 16 games of playing over a point per game with 4 game winners? Fascinating.
So you're saying that he was bad before he was good and both just happen to roughly coincidence with Jack being out and coming back? Fascinating.

I mean, if the Devils picked Makar at 1 and Robertson at 36, maybe, MAYBE, you could argue they're better off than Hischier at 1 plus Boqvist at 36. You'd have more offense but you'd have center troubles.

I wanted to correct the notion that we have 3 30-goal scorers. We have 4 - Hughes, Meier, Hischier, and Bratt. Mercer at 22. Hamilton at 18 and it would be shocking if he doesn't hit 20... so 6 20+ goal scorers. Tatar is at 16 but I'm thinking it's a long shot to hit 20 for him.

Yes and no…it’s not like Timo had his thirty goals here, if he did it would have necessarily taken away from other people’s goal totals.

40 isn't the new 30, that's the problem. It's more like 36 is the new 30. But those aren't neat round numbers.

See I draw the line at getting drawn into the weeds in nonsense side points where weakness is detected.

When the main debate is lost, people who only care about arguing will switch to stronger horses midstream.

The season isn’t over yet but if the worst you can say about a player is he struggled to score for a 9 game stretch while still winning draws and playing well defensively and killing penalties while the team is winning that’s an excellent player over a roughly 82 game schedule. Again if a purely offensive player isn’t scoring he’s potentially a drag on the team. Especially at center where the heavy lifting has to be done. Asking the nose tackle to get more sacks than the defensive end is a tall order.

I make fun with Haula stirring the drink. But it’s actually Nico. He’s been our most important player. For a guy like Jim who appreciates the incredible two way forwards of Devils past to shit on Nico, in a season like this….well, that’s the actual disgrace.

Stop the discussion regarding offense, our Captain and others that got us this season that is negative. We are lucky to be where we are.

Devil's better find a way to ge rest for Vanecek. He is over his season load. Risky to keep playing him going into the playoffs when he is need unless you are happy going in with Schmid. In the playoffs I see alternating Vanecek and Schmid, if needed. Two exhausted goalies isn't a good move for the playoffs.

I admit I’d feel better about Vanecek if he had a good start this month when he wasn’t on four days rest. You need to be able to play on one and two days rest in the playoffs.

Thankfully we have our real starter resting right now, waiting in the wings come playoff time. Blackwood will carry us to the promise land!

Still rather be in this position with an incredible skater group up front + weak in net, this is a way easier fix long term than being say the long term of the Isles with Sorokin and mediocre roster up front. If Vanecek sinks us in the playoffs, I'm calling Trotz in the summer for Saros asap.

I think if VV blows up the playoffs they probably give Schmid the first crack at the 1A job next year, and if that doesn't work out then maybe they make a move at the deadline trying to find a Roloson in 2006 type of solution.

TBH I think they give Schmid a crack if we go down 2-0 in the first round this year, but I don't think anything that happens this year should be any kind of long-term stamp on him - unless he pulls a Cam Ward and wins the Cup his rookie year.
