Fun Fact: If Jack continues at this pace (33.2% faceoffs), he will end up with the third-worst faceoff percentage ever for players to take more than 300 faceoffs in a season. The only guys ahead of him at this point are Kirby Dach last year and Oleg Kvasha in 98-99. He is right now in 7th for players to take more than 200 in a season. Faceoffs aren't all that, but this is just embarrassing. He's gotta improve.
It’s so embarrassing to have a top 3 player in the NHL this season

Hope he does and he finishes with the best 5v5 P/60 so we can illustrate how pointless faceoffs are in 2023 besides setting up the powerplay + empty net situations

I don't want to be the speculation guy but are we worried about Jack's shoulder? Matches the "upper-body" diagnosis. Might not be his shoulder if he practiced for a bit yesterday.

I wonder if this halts any real talks for the Devils until the deadline, just to get a better feel on how long Jack will be out, how well the team does in his absence, etc.

Given that we aren't targeting rentals most likely, I don't think it should

It's no secret as to one of the main reasons why Haula was stapled to Jack's wing for so long, so he could take some of the more important draws.

I put value in faceoffs, but I'm not going to harp on Jack for it given everything else he gets done. Of course he needs to improve, but if that's his biggest flaw, I'm not worried.

Or can use his 8M LTIR money to make a bigger/multiple moves.

agreed - this year, his defensive game has taken a leap
next year, hopefully he can work on faceoffs

Palat and Bratt are the only guys that probably should locks to play with Hughes or Nico every night. (Unless you move Bratt to his own like to try and really spread the offense out)

So last game either Zetterlund or Sharangovich could have moved down in the lineup and you could have scratched Wood or Bastian.

I’m not even guaranteeing Holtz ends up playing well and sticks in the lineup but the Devils team would benefit from finding out a little bit more about where Holtz is at right now from an offensive line role.

I think that is the issue, Wood and Bastian had size and physical play to a team that is small. You kinda need that. Where as Holtz is more of a scorer so would need to thrive in a scorers role.

Said it yesterday, losing Jack blows but it gives someone else on this roster to step up. Namely Nico/Mercer/Holtz (since he's drawing back in it looks like). They've been playing like absolute horse shit so this could be a blessing in disguise.

I don’t see how Nico gets on the list.

Nico’s been pointless in the last three games (while playing great in the Vancouver game) and had 17 points (w/ 8 goals) in the 14 games before that.

Why the hell are people saying he has no chance of breaking our scoring records and the team will fall to the bubble? If he misses the rest of the month, that’s 9 games.

I do think 100 points is probably out the window. Let's say he's out those 9 games, that leaves him 23 games for 33 points, that's a real challenge. I know it's not much higher than his current pace, but it's a tall order, especially if the Devils have nothing to play for in the last few games.

Hopefully only a couple of weeks. Going with Brodeurs words in that it's nothing serious. The team can hold the fort for the month imo.

Now for Smith.. that'll sting deep.

I just think back to this board when Marty went down in 08-09 and how the team rallied and played some of the most inspired hockey I’d seen with Clemmer as the #1. Hopefully this just makes everyone raise their game to another level while Jack is gone.
And it was a lot more dire that year because it was a longer term injury and earlier in the season which could have sank their playoff chances

That’s speculation, guy. Who knows. People are making wild guesses about when he got injured, we don’t even know that.
