As for over $9 million. It's entirely possible that's the price for a team he doesn't really want to play for and maybe he takes a bit less to play with his Swiss buddies and maybe win a cup
If we somehow got that culture of take a cut to get a cup ingrained into this team in addition to the insane amount of prospects coming up, this team would easily be the next Chicago/Boston and then some for a loooong time. Can't imagine it'll happen, but it's fun to think about.

I doubt he’s salty at all. More likely just being a mouthpiece for the team telling the fans that they made a strong offer and Meier’s contract will cost too much anyways.

Yeah, Strickland is famously a devout water carrier for the Blues org, he’s not playing 4D chess on his own or airing personal gripes.

Over 9 million on an extension?!

I'd rather just qualify him for a year at $10m if that's what it takes.

This report makes sense given that there was speculation they were waiting for the special event at the Sharks game tonight before making the moves.

Time will tell.

Is he playing though? I know he's been out with a supposed injury.

It would be pretty risky if he played.

Well paying all these assets and then giving him a market value UFA deal is pretty stupid too.

This guy isn't Matthew Tkachuk.
Why wouldn’t Meier expect a UFA equivalent contract? His future team only gets 1 year of control at $10 million.

If I’m Meier I expect a slight premium over a UFA deal due to my large QO.

Over 9 mil for this guy? The longer this goes the more disinterested I become in acquiring him.
I wouldn’t put any weight into the over 9 million part. No one’s been actually able to negotiate with him to this point. That’s just pure speculation and as I said him being a mouthpiece for the blues saying oh the contract will cost too much anyways.

Plus it’s been reported that Meier might be interested in signing long-term with a contender but not necessarily a team outside of the playoff picture. I’d imagine STL’s price and ours would be pretty different.

But as I said no one actually knows that price right now.

I thought he was back playing?

Its been widely reported that the Devils want to be able to speak with his agent about an extension. Something tells me if the money is something the Devils aren't comfortable with then they would walk away. If the Devils make a move for him then they feel the deal they can make his acceptable for the future of the team.

Pettersson is apparently better than Hughes to some people……

I had to remember where I was though. The land of where Shane Doan is better than Patrik Elias.

The ONLY place where Shane Doan could be be better than Patrik Elias.

I don’t agree with it, and according the the results, most neutral fans don’t. But I can see why Vancouver fans are arguing their case. The much more outlandish discourse right now is Ottawa fans arguing Stutzle over Hughes…which is absolutely insane.

It says over 9. So yes 8-8.5 is different than 9.5.

Now we're talking more than we were rumored to be offering Gaudreau who was an actual UFA and a better player.
We have no clue what the price is. That wasn’t inside information. Was just speculation and excuses for the blues no longer being in the Meier race.

To know how to play this trade deadline, the Sharks have certainly asked Timo which teams he’d be willing to sign with as part of any trade.

Scenario A. Timo gives the Sharks a list of teams or tells them he’s open minded about signing with any good team that wanted him. In that scenario, the way to play it is to state your price, let his agent talk to teams to firm up interest, say you’re willing to wait until the summer when there are more suitors if their price isn’t met, then obviously pick the most attractive package if there are options.

Scenario B. Timo tells the Sharks there’s only one team (or only one team with interest and available assets) he wants to go to. Here, your true ask can’t be much more than Timo’s value to a different team with no extension, but you keep Timo’s desire secret, don’t let his agent talk to anyone, and try to pressure his chosen team to cough up as much as they can.

All the reporting on the situation suggests Scenario B and that NJ is the team.

I don’t buy CAR, STL, or Vegas as real bidders. I think if Timo winds up somewhere other than NJ it's a young bubble team looking to turn the corner and willing to bet they can convince Timo to stay, namely Buffalo. Quinn and a mid-1st is doable for them and arguably a better base package than Holtz, Muk, and a late 1st.

In what world is Meier worth 9.5 on a long term deal?

This speculation is making me less and less interested. I don't think the return the sharks get will be nearly what fans are speculating. But speculated contract extension numbers generally aren't terribly far off. I'd rather have Bratt than Meier and have no interest in paying Meier as much or more than the high end of what Bratt wants.
