I absolutely agree... however, it relies on how SJ views Holtz. If they don't like him as much as whatever is offered by someone else, there's really nothing we can do.
Yes there is. Offer an extra pick or an extra prospect. This year’s first and Shara and Mukh or Casey and one of any other prospect not named Hughes or Nemec or Schmid/Daws. I don’t see any team offering a premium prospect or player like Mercer. If someone wants to do that then they can have him. I’m skeptical that Carolina springs for Meier given they don’t like to pay market price for their players. Similarly I’m skeptical the NYR can shoehorn his next contract in without major surgery they may not be able to undertake. If NJ just makes the price equivalent to getting him with an extension in place if some team beats that it has to be one that can sign him like Horvat signed with NYI.

Holtz has legit value to teams. If he doesn’t fit within our current lineup (he does, but whatever), at least move him at the deadline.

I’d like to see us keep Casey of all the realistic pieces but won’t prevent me from acquiring Timo. The depth is among the best.

They may want quality over quantity, or they may simply have Holtz on their no-draft list. Who knows. Other teams probably have us beat with the 1st round pick since we're so high in the standings. Will another team offer a better prospect than Holtz? Probably not in our eyes, but maybe they're better in SJ's eyes.

As for the Rags affording him next year, Meier is just an RFA. They can easily flip him in the off-season to re-coop a chunk of what they pay. In fact I'm willing to trade for him without an extension in place for the same reason. If we can't come to an agreement, I'm pretty confident that some other team will offer us at least a 1st for the honor to do so.

If the NYR add Meier as a rental at a price higher than Horvat I’d be ok with that. Hurts them long term. They aren’t getting much if they can’t extend him as Meier pretty much has to be extended after this season and he controls his fate at that point. If Meier goes to Colorado or some other team as long as the price is higher than NJ offers.

If we don't get Meier this page will have the "Fitz couldn't beat that?" posts for a few days. If we do get Meier certain people will say it's too much of a price to pay, complain about the extension assuming there is one, etc. It's a lose-lose situation for some of y'all regardless.

My take, contrary to the board's opinion, is that I am OK if we don't make a big trade before the deadline. Fitz has said he likes to make his big moves in the offseason. However, I wouldn't mind seeing a small deal for some more snarl and grit on the team.

We only have another 3 and 1/2 weeks to see what happens.

Also, Fitz needs to sign Bratt yesterday.

NJ is second on Wheeler’s list. I was annoyed at first and I do think they belong at #1, but I read through the Devils profiles and some of the top Minnesota profiles and I think it comes down to this:

Wheeler really really likes Wallstedt and Rossi.

Wheeler is not so convinced by the strong D+1 of Filmon or the strong D+2 of Vilen.

I don’t think I can fault him too much on either of those views. I agree that Wallstedt is a great prospect, and I’ve always liked Rossi.

And while I’m really happy with what Vilén and Filmon have done, and hope he’s wrong about their upside, they are both still far from NHL ready.

He wrote some really nice things about Luke and Nemec, he still believes in Holtz, and his write ups on Casey, Muk, and Grits were very positive.

Palat was definitely a damned if you do, damned if you don't signing

Pre-signing, oh we could use a top six winger, especially a guy like Palat - plays a hard game, is clutch and has vet leadership

Post-signing, OMG HOW COULD YOU SIGN HIM FOR THAT?!

I think people are overlooking Patrick Moynihan. He's not going to light the world on fire, but his speed and tenacity are going to make him an absolute pain in the ass 4th line pest to play against.

His offense has totally dried up this year but he produced pretty nicely his first three years, 61 points in 89 games his first three years isn't bad. While his offense has gone down this season his PIMs have gone through the roof, so maybe someone who watches Providence can comment on his usage.

Him and Jack are BFF's, I can't imagine he's going to want to UFA somewhere else. Even before we drafted Jack he was gushing about how much he loved Moynihan and what a great 4th liner he would be. I would love to stash him in Utica for a year or two and then give him a chance out of camp in the future.

When 4 out of 5 of your top prospects are are Dmen...I'm happy.

The turnaround in our D, both prospects and with the big club has been spectacular...Thanks so much Fitz!

That said, I think our forward prospect group is very weak and has been for a long while. There isn't a viable center anywhere in the system and after Holtz who is trending down quickly much of what is there are long shots. I think this needs to be addressed especially the center position.
