This is almost my exact thoughts, with one difference. I would sign Stephenson to play with Hughes and not Debrusk.

I agree with the Miles Wood talk that we havent found a suitable replacement. There is one definitely available in free agency in Yakov Trenin. He will replace Wood's physicality, will chip in 15 goals and is one of the best bottom 6 forecheckers and defensive wingers.

Trenin in is high on my wish list for this summer. Without diving too deep atm since the true off-season isn’t even til like July, I think you could put him on the left side of Hughes and have either Meier or Bratt on the right.

Literally just beating the cream of the crap would have been enough. What was it? 9 points lost to San Jose, Arizona, and the Ducks alone?

They'd be fighting with Carolina with second if they took care of business against garbage teams, it's been a good like 9-10 games they've lost. Could probably add Pittsburgh tomorrow too

We have 7 regulation losses to teams currently not in playoff contention (8 if you count St. Louis who is 4 points back in the WC in the West) plus another 6 regulation losses to Washington, Tampa, and Detroit, who we would be chasing for WC spots. The opportunity has been there, we've just completely failed to do anything about it.

The team’s scoring has just dried up. In the last five games Bratt has one point Jack and Timo three and Haula and Mercer one. Hischier has five but he’s the only one with any consistency and just one point per game is hardly going to carry the team. They just forgot how to finish
they have been going through a lot mentally. They lost their coach, they lost fellow players and some are playing with some major pain. I remember when some people were all over Nico regarding how poorly he was playing a couple of years ago, he is the leader, the captain. Let's hope next season all these issues are gone.

Well they're practically all veteran players so mentally it shouldn't matter.

It's the battle of trash. Which piece of trash will rise to the top of the garbage bin? Geez what a year to suck. The bar is so low to get in the playoffs it's almost criminal we're going to miss. Call the cops and put everyone in jail for this crime.

We just needed more from our veterans like Jack Hughes. Don'tcha think?
Jack Hughes is being busy being the player, coach, and GM. Don't you know, he's busy figuring out how to give him & his brother more ice time.

We need to revamp the bottom six. Need to add several pieces and likely add one top 6 forward - not sure you can count on both Palat and Mercer to be in there.

Can't imagine Holtz is back.

Likely need to add 1 Dman.

And a starting goalie.

Not a quick fix.

You raise a good point about what makes a veteran. The Devils have a young roster by and large which contributes to losing according to NHL conventional wisdom. I’d say that it takes more than hitting 25 and playing in a couple of playoff series to be a veteran. My oldest just turned 27. I’m not sure he’s a veteran yet. He thinks he is but he just called my wife and asked her to get him a blender off Amazon. And he’s a summa cum laude graduate with a double major in math and computers so it’s clearly not just a function of what you might know.

I think we need to add at least 3 forwards. One of whom can be a legit second line guy if needed. The other two can be middle 6 guys with emphasis on the third line.

Honestly, I feel like I'd be kind of surprised if Fitz does much on the defensive side. If there is one thing Fitz has shown, it's an ability to be patient, and I don't think he's going to bail on Siegs and Marino after a poor year when they were so good the year before. I've kicked around the idea of moving Marino for a another type of d-man on the right and reallocating the rest of his money to the forward group, but I don't know if that's really in play.

The only real likely option to switch out there might be Bahl, so maybe they make a move where they trade someone like Bahl + a pick for a rental (similar to what we did with Rango / Toffoli this year). But honestly wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do much of anything besides sign a 7th defenseman.
