The Devils had superior depth 1-14 last season at forward, no question. Players like Boqvist, Sharangovich, and Zetterlund were healthy scratches and Holtz was finally sent to the minors when he couldn't get in. What they had this season, theoretically, was more ability to double-shift people - they started the year deep enough to put Meier and Hamilton on PP2. They lost Foote and Halonen the first half of the year which left the callups to be a guy like Willman instead, then they lost McLeod who was keeping the 'bottom 6' afloat when he wasn't forced into duty with Jesper Bratt.

Hughes disintegrating and having to be put with Nico/Bratt to babysit him has really sewered any semblance of depth. At this point, the team will likely improve without him there.

It’s a bit better.

The fact is we should draft play drivers and/or two-way forwards more than a just a guy who can maybe score a bunch of goals if he has the linemates to drag his ass up and down the ice.
I agree. The initial point was that we should move Holtz while he still has value and if you really want a true one trick pony who can actually score goals then go draft Eiserman.

I’m not advocating for drafting Eiserman over the other options because I don’t find passenger snipers that valuable.

Passenger/Snipers have gone from significantly overrated to significantly underrated in a few years. You don't want a whole team of them but we have enough dominant territorial players to have one or two in the lineup.

I think this team misses Severson's outlet passes a good amount. Not just the crazy stretch pases here and there but just being able to get the puck to our forwards quickly to breakout.

Among other things I'm sure we're missing from last year of course but that one sticks out to me.

And yes I know, I don't need to see Severson's player card compared to Nemec or Luke.

I agree. Hamilton and Graves could make the first pass efficiently too. It’s also the area I think Luke has struggled most. He would like to skate it out but passing is the primary thing and also him switching sides from right to left defense has probably been a big factor.

Related point: We had about 180 points scored by defensemen last year. Led by Hamilton with 76. This year we have roughly 120 to date (with Luke leading us at 33 and Marino and Simon - in so many fewer games - next).

Looks like we will finish with very significantly diminished scoring from the back line. It’s probably been a factor in our collapse.

Table of F's given this season. But now I'm all out.

I feel like this sort of data is easier to read this way.

I'll ask again- who was this mystery 4th rookie DMan?

Kevin Bahl is not a rookie.

I will agree that Bahl had some NHL games under his belt before this season started, BUT 66 games played over the course of 3 prior seasons does not define a veteran D-man. A yearling? Maybe, but a lot closer to a rookie than a veteran ready to hold down the fort.

Will he be a regular? Probably, but not more than a 5/6 D-man. Kick him up any further and you will see what you have been watching. Unless more work improves his speed and agility, 5/6 is his destination. He actually looks comfortable there and that's what you want.

Ideally, you want to role with something like (not perfect but close to):

XXX-Hischier-Meier
Palat-Hughes-Bratt
Mercer-Haula-Holtz
XXX-Lazar-Foote/XXX

XXX-Hamilton
Hughes-Nemec
Bahl/Hatakka/Misyul-Marino

XXX
Allen

So the biggest needs are filling a top-six wing spot (Chandler Stephenson?)

Finding bottom six depth that has some level of competence (Duclair as a pure offensive talent?)

A top four LD. I think you move Siegs out in some deal anyway but there needs to be an add here with how poorly he and Marino have shown. I think Bahl can play 6D minutes and we have Hatakka, Misyul, etc.
I've posted these names before, but for the empty forward spaces up front my top UFA choices are Debrusk, Foegele, and Trenin. I also agree we need an upgrade at LD, but I would keep Siegs and hope he bounces back - as this season has shown, injuries happen. Please repeat the Marino trade with Marcus Pettersson, Fitz.

Debrusk - Hughes - Bratt
Palat - Hischier - Meier
Foegele - Haula - Mercer
Trenin - Lazar - *Guy who looks best in camp*

Pettersson - Marino
Hughes - Hamilton
Siegs/Bahl - Nemec
Siegs/Bahl - Nemec

Holtz could be on the roster in the above alignment. But given the org just doesn't like him, I think it's more likely he is trade bait (my preference is to keep him given he's very cheap scoring depth, but I think the club will move on).

Also, time for Jack, Luke and Simon to start bulking up and adding some man strength...

Esp for Luke and Simon.... if they want a long defensive career, they gotta start playing like physical defensemen.... not asking for barbarian level but confident guys who don't know what hurt is.

I don't think there is a "normal" player who doesn't know what "hurt is". Simon is 191 lbs at 6'1 and just turned 20 yrs-old (FEB. 15). A little upper body strength, not bulk, would be his best acquisition this off season. His skating, edges, agility, puck skills, and hockey IQ are his top attributes. He is learning how to play against the heavier forecheckers. He will soon handle it with skill. Turning him into a muscular #6 type D-man will ruin him. He is a member of the new age D-men. Decent size, great skating, high level skills, and a very high IQ. They play more with their feet, hands, and brains than the D-men of even 10 years ago.

Luke is also a member of that new age D group. He is 6'/2" and nowhere near the 183 lbs he started out with. He needs more weight and it should be balanced between muscle weight and just plain distributed body weight. He too is only 20 years old (Sept. 9) but 5+ months older than Simon who just turned 20 in February and has played most of this season as a 19-yr-old. These 2 guys are kids and still growing. Give them time to naturally fill out while working on building strength, not bulk.

Jack is the guy who needs to start bulking up just a bit, but he too needs muscle strength. He is listed at 5'11"/176 lbs. I wouldn't bet on that weight now either. He is a toothpick that is easily manhandled when he gets set up for the kill. No matter how he works it, there are always times when he is in a position to take a hit. It doesn't have to be a hard hit for him to get hurt. We have seen that over and over. Right now we are seeing him give up the puck in order to avoid a hit. Because he IS hurt? Probably, but when not hurt he is just a hit away from the next one. Surgery will likely fix him up, but in the same body weight and lack of muscular development, he is just another event away from being injured again. People have figured out the way to deal with Jack Hughes and his ability to beat them is to hit and hurt him.

His joking last season saying he doesn't like to work out in the summer. He likes the beach and relaxing. That's an immature kid talking. Management has to take charge of growing this kid up physically and emotionally. An off season training schedule is the 1st step and Brother Luke can join him. They are always on the ice together so they can work out off the ice together. A mature Jack and Luke Hughes will be unstoppable.

It has taken ample time for Quinn to become what he was projected to be. He had to grow, mature, learn, and make adjustments in his game and he has become Norris Trophy material every season of late. Some are actually talking about him as League MVP this season, though that may actually be a stretch.

When Jack was drafted, he and Quinn told the media that the best Hughes hadn't arrived yet. There is a lot more coming from both Jack and Luke, but I don't think the hockey world has seen more than a glimpse of Luke Hughes. He and Simon are going to form the core of one of the most dynamic D-corps this league has ever seen. Imagine if when Quinn's contract runs out and he simply says, "Thank you, Vancouver. I love you all, but I want to finish my career with my brothers???????????" Then he signs with NJ the max contract they can offer. How many million$$$
does one need?

That's pure dreamworld stuff, but Hey? Who knows?

I wonder if we'll get to see Halonen or Foote at any point this year.

Part of me also wonders if they're holding Foote back so that he doesn't have to answer questions about his brother.

If I were Nolan, I would simply answer, "No comment on what I know nothing about. Next question."

No reason to drag the kid into the dirt he had no part in.

I feel pretty sure if Foote plays he won’t be asked anything about his brother.

He couldn’t say anything that matters and it’s his brother, not him, it really wouldn’t be an appropriate question to ask Nolan.

It is odd he seemed to play fine in his rehab stint in the AHL but they haven’t gotten him in. Its not like the team is playing so well they don’t want to mess up the good mojo.

Foote should be trying to make the team and show value as a net front PP guy. The Devils should give him lots of chances to show what he can or can’t do there since he won’t be a half board PP guy at the NHL level .

Women at physical therapy handed me a 1 lbs dumbbell....I said to her you know I could bench press 300lbs when I was 16 years old...she said yeah but now you're old and broken so this is going to have to do....

What a horrible day.
Yeah, my daily workout is with several series of reps with a 10 lbs dumbbell. Age catches up with us all and for those of us who have had broken parts (hips, knees, and shoulders - the joints) they like us less and less every year we grow older.

It hasn't caught up with me yet :)

I don't think? My shoulder is just a little sore.

Perhaps but they can't protect him forever unless they never play him in the NHL at all

It's just as likely (or more so) they want him to get regular reps at Utica first before they throw him into the soon-to-be vacated Holtz spot lol

I’m making work with my weight only. A lot of push ups. Like 240 per two or three days. I did 50/60 (20-15-10-10-5)pull ups last year. due to the wrong technique of exercises on the uneven bars, I tore off my trapezius muscle. as a result, I didn't pull up for about half a year. Or even more. Now I'm just starting to pull myself up slowly. 5-10 per day after the first weak.
Muscles mostly don’t grow, but at least I’m in a good shape. I don’t want to eat enough protein, I just want to have energy for the work and health.

They would have to waive him to send him to Utica because he is no longer exempt- his last stint was a conditioning stint.

They might have kept him out of the lineup on the road to mitigate the possibility of a Cal question - but you have to think he has been coached on the answer to provide. If they don't play him tomorrow its likely this is just a (bad) coaching and organizational decision, mostly coaching since Green bragged about getting 100% control of the lineup decisions.

Lifted like a man possessed in college, which is 10 years ago now. Used to rep 225 on the bench like it was a pencil. Working sets were 265. Easy, breezy.

Hadn't lifted in literally 8 full years. Wife, 2 kids, career, same old excuses. Got back into the gym a month ago on monday, threw on 165 to do some warmup reps. Knew when the bar hit my chest on rep 1 I f***ed up.

Roll of shame on my first warm-up rep of the day. Left the gym out of embarrassment.

Have been 4 days a week since then, and I'm nowhere near where I was in college but thank god I'm not failing with 165 any more.

Take care my friend.
50's the falloff is gradual.
60's it's very noticeable and you fight it as if it can't happen to you.
70's you ask yourself, "Why did I do this to my body?" Then you lay down in bed and keep readjusting your position until you a re finally comfortable and nothing hurts. Then as you relax you say "There is nothing I wouldn't have done and I would do it all over in a heartbeat."

Football in high school and frosh year of college.
Baseball until injury voided my contract.
Most importantly hockey (had to choose between it and Football/Baseball because of the seasonal overlaps).

I didn't hang up the pads until 50 because I couldn't see the puck. 5 years later had cornea transplants. I wasn't wrong about not being able to see, but didn't know I was going blind (see the eyes are another issue with age). Now I have better vision than I ever had my whole life.

Latest age kick in the ass is hearing. My wife finally got fed up with "Huh?" She scheduled a hearing test. I've now got 2 hearing aids to create cross hearing from the right to the left. I'm nearly deaf in the right ear as the result of benign tumor that was burned off my auditory nerve by Gamma Knife Surgery. Can't believe how well I can hear now.

I have also had a hip replacement and may have to get the other one done. Goaltending was the 2nd love of my life and combined with line play and Catching /1st base, I killed my hips and my knees aren't happy either. My wife says I don't walk, but shuffle. I don't buy it, but it's probably denial.
I have a bad shoulder from hockey, but have fought that one off through therapy.

Joints, eyes, ears and who knows what else, but I'm still kicking and feeling good. Take it one month at a time now when it wasn't that long ago I was taking it a year at a time. Spring and summer brings rebirth and fall leads to the dreaded winter when everything aches.

Can't complain because the alternative isn't one I'm even thinking about.

Rambling is another consequence of aging. Do feel free to just go right by my posts if you find them to be such.

Have to get him through waivers before they can do that. It is a risk.

This is almost my exact thoughts, with one difference. I would sign Stephenson to play with Hughes and not Debrusk.

I agree with the Miles Wood talk that we havent found a suitable replacement. There is one definitely available in free agency in Yakov Trenin. He will replace Wood's physicality, will chip in 15 goals and is one of the best bottom 6 forecheckers and defensive wingers.
