Did we have 7m for him?
What was our salary cap space/the cap that year?

I believe we did, as there were a lot of people bummed when we didn't sign him and it was announced Carolina did, so I'm assuming we had the cap space, though maybe we didn't have the actual dollars lol.

Regardless, it's been we didn't sign him to that deal Carolina gave him after that one year. He either would have been good enough that we would have given him the same deal or he would have been so bad that he wouldn't have been much help anyway.

I don't have any inside connections to the Devils, but I have it on good word (not through anyone personally in the Devils organization) that Lou tried to re-acquire Brian Gionta that summer, which would have been the most Lou thing ever. 3 years after we didn't sign him to the contract Montreal gave him. We apparently tried to get him back, but Montreal didn't really wanna sell him off to us and they were a playoff team for those next two years, the last two years of Gionta there, but they had missed the year before and I'm pretty sure Gionta missed the last 2-ish months or more with a season ending injury.

Lou also reached out to Gionta on July 1st of 2014 (which came out anyway), but I guess he wanted to sign with Buffalo. Not sure if they offered more dollars and/or term or if he just wanted to take the Parise and Clarkson route of ''Going home'' lol.

Gionta in 2014 would have been highly bizarre as he was just another older guy on a team full of them. That would have been outrageous. Maybe if we got him we wouldn't have signed Cammalleri? But even he was 3 years younger than Gionta was at that point. Or we probably wouldn't have signed Patty's buddy Havlat, who no doubt cost less than Gionta, as he was just coming off buyout from the Sharks and was a terrible injury case.

Jagr, Zidlicky, Salvador, Zubrus, Elias, Gionta, Clemmensen, Ryder, Clowe, ALL of those players were at least 34 years old at the time, with only Clowe being under 34 and he was 32. And the first 6 guys were all 35 or older.

I think a lot here are only thinking of the traditional depiction of an alcoholic that needs to drink every day to stop the shakes.

Even if you only drink on weekends but you’re still bingeing enough to make poor decision such as getting behind the wheel and not only endangering yourself, but others as well, that can absolutely be a problem too.
I don't disagree. I've met people who think they're not alcoholics because they ''Don't drink EVERY day and don't NEED to drink every day'' but when they do start drinking they're out of control, trying to fight everybody, acting like a tough guy, trying to drive, slurring their words, drunk dialing people and saying nasty shit to them.

Meanwhile, on the days they aren't drinking, they're pretty much inside their home, watching TV all day, barely talking when you come over to hang out and are pretty boring and lifeless because they're alcoholics and they're not drinking that day.

So yeah, I don't think you need to be a daily drinker to have a problem, but I also don't necessarily believe this means Brunette has a problem.

Hopefully just a stupid decision on his part (and it probably wasn't the first time, I doubt anybody gets caught the FIRST time, unless they're REALLY f***ED UP) and hopefully it's the last time and thankfully no one was hurt or god forbid killed due to his negligence.

View attachment 644749So that's why it was 27 mph, Broward County is 15 mph. Equivalent to a 37 in a 25 ticket for those of us in NJ. It certainly seems like he's got a problem with cops in Broward County. I do wonder why ppl automatically say he's got a problem though. You certainly could be a drunk and need help or it could be an isolated issue. Having said that, I have zero sympathy for anyone who gets a valid DUI.

Speeding tickets are at a borderline scam key revenue source and it’s very easy to get them in some states (I’m looking at you Ohio), so I’m not going to be outraged their unless it involves reckless driving.

School kids don’t have to be there for the “School Zone” trap, I mean, rules to be in effect.

Those are unrelated to DUIs to me.

As a ratio of the overage to the limit, it is more equivalent to 45 in a 25.

I agree there's not enough to say he's got an alcohol problem. The only concerning factor to me (other than the drinking and driving) is that he chose to do it in a spot he's been busted for traffic violations before, one of those less than a year ago. Instead of calling an Uber, guy decides he can't get caught a third time, or just doesn't care if he's caught.

First and foremost, drinking and driving is not okay. No matter who you are. If you're worried you might have to drive while you've been drinking at some point, then it's easier to just NOT DRINK.

Drinking and driving is not okay, whether you're the president, a hockey coach, an actor, a cop, a lawyer, doctor or the guy next door. It's not okay.

That said, I don't think this would be the first time an active player or coach has gotten a DUI.

Perhaps I somehow missed a more in-depth story on this, but why is it being implied that he has a problem? There's plenty of instances where people have gotten DUI's, but don't necessarily have a problem abusing alcohol, but just made the bad decision of driving while under the influence. Or they made the decision way too many times and finally got caught, but I don't believe it's necessarily an alcohol abuse problem, although it definitely could be as well.

I just thought it was kind of strange that people have implied he needs to get help, but perhaps I missed some context?

Hopefully he doesn't have an issue abusing alcohol and at the very least this bad publicity is enough to cause him to never operate a vehicle while drinking again.
As an organization you force him to get help whether this is isolated or not. Because if it happens again, and you had a chance to intervene, but didn't, then as a publicly sensitive organization, you did a poor job.

Hoping for the best for/with Brunette!

But could this be a case of a wealthy man consistently getting traffic tickets in the same county, and so cops are a little more free with their handing of them out?

Because Ill be honest.. I drive 5-10 over the mph of almost every street! And if I was rich in a nice car with a history of tickets in that county, I wouldnt expect any leniency thats for sure!

One can hope its just one cocktail over the limit and a disgruntled cop seeing a chance to stick it to a Broward County traffic offender!

27 is 27 and that's not fast.

And do we even know what the FL laws are for a DUI vs DWI? It can be as little a .04 in some states to get a DUI. He blew a stop sign it sounds like and that got him pulled over then rang up on a DUI which could be just having a glass of wine with dinner or it could be he was smashed. Until we know I'm not passing judgement. Could be the cop is a Panthers fan and wanted to job him for all we know.

What do you do? Send him to rehab even if he doesn't need it? Or are you suggesting some kind of like course that one would take on DUI or something?

27 in a 35 is slow. 27 in a 15 is nearly twice the limit.

Without knowing the details I can't say, but Devils need to look into it, and then go a little heavy as to what type of program he goes into.

I think the organization should be supportive, but they also can't put a potential issue behind our players. They need to make sure he is good before he is on the bench again.

If only this happened in the Commonwealth of Virginia.. then we'd know it to be just an overblown traffic offense for a rich Yankee!

Yeah, nothing can be done by the Devils until they actually speak to Brunette. Someone mentioned that he wouldn't have gotten this job if he was an alcoholic, Devils do a decent job vetting people for positions.
