What’s even worse is that we should have forfeited that pick because of the Kovy saga. Instead we ended up with John Quenneville at 30 in the ‘14 draft when we could have had a shot at a pick in the 10-15 range.
There shouldn't have been a "Kovy saga"

When it was clear that Lou was keeping that pick and deferring the penalty to the next year, it was so baffling that I was SURE Lou had some crazy intricate plan to pull something out of his ass. But nope, it was as bad as it looked, and with hindsight, even worse than that. Just an unforgivable move. That really marked the beginning of the end for Lou.
Really 0 logic behind that move. Felt like a petty, “I’ll show you, NHL” type of move. Really weird.

100% logic behind it.

We had no money to ice a team (cap space) and no matter who we picked in that first round was going to be in the lineup to just complete the roster

Devils finished with the 11th worst record that season.

The 11th-15th picks were:
11 - Kevin Fiala
12 - Brendan Perlini (bust)
13 - Jakub Vrana
14 - Julius Honka (bust)
15 - Dylan Larkin

The top 10 players on Bob MacKenzie's final list all were selected in the top 10. The top players remaining on the list were:

Who knows how things would've actually turned out, but there were some good players available.

Though it should also be noted that we took a center with our first picks in 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017 and Larkin was the top rated center available.

Since we're talking about Matteau and the recent trade Lou made in the other thread, what really annoys me about the last couple years of Lou here and seeing him make an upgrade with Horvat right now is how lackadaisical he was with replacing Parise in 2012. We got NOTHING to replace him with, save for Bobby Butler and what else? Krys Barch? lol.

I caught a lot of shit here for trashing Lou over that. We kept the 1st round pick, Parise walked and we did nothing. Oh yeah, we re-traded for Ponikarovsky after he walked the summer before when we were held up with Parise and he was PATHETIC and already had one foot out of the league the second time we had him.

Oh yeah, 38 year old Steve Sullivan at the deadline the next year. Not that I think he should have done anything that year at the deadline, it was too late. We were already cooked. Clarkson definitely should have went that deadline, especially when people are already bummed that Severson and potentially Graves might walk for nothing in a year where we are FIRMLY in a playoff spot.

And all we heard ''You don't replace a playa like Zach Parise'' the entire summer. I was really starting to seriously sour on Lou at that point and had long since soured on Conte. And then hearing about how we have to give our ''Younga playas'' a chance, which were garbage like Tedenbust.

Honestly, he kind of did do the same thing with the Islanders this last offseason. Doing nothing in the offseason and waiting until the next season when the team was out of a playoff spot. And a traffic cone could replace 45 year old Chara and 40 year old Greene, so it's not like he really should have done anything there and he did trade his first for Romanov.

But they also didn't lose a ''Playa like Zach Parise'' and really haven't seen he's been there, other than when he passed Tavares walking through the door, as Tavares was walking out the door.

In the end, we probably would have been even more worse off if we had blown a huge wad replacing Parise in 2012. It probably would have been at the expense of our 2013 first rounder way before we actually we used it on Cory and there was the lockout, which made it an awkward and weird offseason/season to begin with.

The 2014 Ruutu deadline trade is one of the stupidest, nonsense moves I can remember. Like, why even bother? Just do nothing, rather than acquiring a clearly already massively declining 30 year old player with an additional 2 years remaining.

Domi has 4 5v5 goals this season, and has a lousy 5v5 shot rate. Predominantly with Kane.

He has 7 pp goals, and 14 pp points(which includes 5 secondaries).

Stick him on our bottom 6, and give him 2nd pp unit duties, and he will be a disappointment.

I think we still don't fully understand how much the financial situation of that period effected hockey operations.

So worst case scenario is he fits right in with some of the other bottom 6 plugs but actually plays like a POS too?

I still don’t see the downside if the price is right enough.

to be fair though there really wasn't much that he could offer in a trade. who was even our top prospect and what team would really have wanted the 30th pick?

But plays like a POS means what? Cheap shots, and time in the penalty box? We want that?

I guess if the cost is a 5th rounder then whatever, but I'd guess he'd cost more then that.

I might have given him a little too much heat in the Parise aftermath, but I was one of the few people that was way worried about what we would do after losing him. I think everyone was worried to a slight extent, but I was one of the most pessimistic on it.

There were a lot of moves after that which I didn’t quite understand. Like Steve Sullivan (didn’t give a shit about the 7th we spent on him) at 2013 deadline? Why even bother?

Tuomo Ruutu? For 2 more years at over $3 million? Think his real cap hit was $4.5 but I’m pretty sure they retained.

The two hot names thrown around here (not necessarily by me) at the time were Alex Semin, who I think got a one year deal from Carolina later in the 2012 off-season. It worked out that year, but Carolina extended him and then I think they even bought him out with 3 years left on his deal. Poster Ty Cobb was a heavy proponent of Semin and Lou signing him.

And then there was Tomas Vanek, who was constantly talked up for at least a year earlier as someone Buffalo was ready to deal (along with Ryan Miller) but he wound up not even going until the 13-14 season, in a trade to the Islanders that someone reminded us of the other day after the Horvat stuff lol.

You know exactly what it means: someone that is not fun to play against. It’s not exactly a secret that the Devils could absolutely use a little more grit and sandpaper in the lineup, especially come playoff time.

His teams are typically not good. I imagine opposing teams welcome seeing his teams on the calendar.
