That, and I wonder sometimes what the difference is really like. I mean, I get it, playing in the middle of Manhattan is its own thing, and the location of MSG means it'll always have sellouts and whatnot through corporate seats alone, but in the big picture it's not like the local media really talks about the Rangers all that much, anyway. Listen to local sports radio and they're all like "Oh, it's February, nothing going on in sports until March Madness and baseball season", just a lot of ignoring or sheer ignorance of hockey, whether it's the Rags, Isles, or us.

The size of the Rags' "fanbase" is always played up, but they just don't seem to make that much of a ripple in the overall sports scene around here; this is a baseball/football/Knicks market.
The Rangers and their fans display a superiority complex within the context of hockey in order to mask their actual inferiority complex in the context of all sports.

Then we shouldn't make the trade.

Mercer never be a high-producing talent.... or he could be a tagalong winger on some great lines. Either way I don't want him going anywhere

sharks aren't trading from a position of strength they are going to lose in regardless so the devils shouldn't have to sweeten the deal that much. if that is the case then walk away and target someone else.

I really don’t agree with the idea Mercer can’t be a high producer. He certainly has the talent to be one. The thing that will hold him back is his usage

Unless there's a bidding war.

But, yeah, I agree, there's a limit to what we should pay, and so far, looking at what he's done, I trust Fitz to not overpay.

On the Marek show when he brought up Meier and landing spots we were the only team Friedge mentioned by name. Now he said it doesn’t mean we’d get him but we’re a team that can do it and would have interest. So more of the same but happy to be the only one specifically mentioned by Elliotte

By the way - if we are offering Meier 9m after trading for him then Bratt is beat on an extension. Because hes gonna ask for more and then Fitz is gonna tell him to take a hike

Bratt will have no one to blame but himself when he ends up being moved this offseason. Players who dont interject themselves into a contract negotiations or let their agents do their deciding for them deserve what they get.

Bratt can either take fair value or be replaced as Nicos best friend by Meier. No skin off my nose, especially considering the last two negotiations with him.

The moment Meier signs at 8.5-9+ Bratt will ask for the same and it simply isnt happening. Besides, maybe its best we dont commit another 8m to a small forward who does what we already have in droves in playmaking

2023 1st
Alexander Holtz
Pick 2 of any of our B prospects like Foote, Walsh, etc etc etc

San Jose will want a roster player, Sharangovich is as good as gone. See ya dink, couldnt stand hearing about him next to Hughes anyway. Would have been our own Matt Moulson if we committed to that

Not dealing both Holtz and Yegor would be nice

It would be absolutely moronic to haggle over a few hundred thousand and lose your elite winger. They’re the same caliber of player, we can afford both at 9 and we should if that’s what needs to be done. Saying “Bratt can take fair value” and then quite literally not giving him fair value which would he what Meier signs for is unfathomably stupid.

Bratt is 4th in WAR among wingers. Meier is 5th
Bratt is 7th in GSVA among wingers. Meier is 9th
Bratt is 4th in xGAR among wingers. Meier is 5th

So please enlighten me about how Meier’s worth it and Bratt isn’t besides “mUh SmAlL”

That actually sounds like less than the package of Shara, Holtz, and a first that we've been discussing here.

Also, wouldn't San Jose have to make some other move to get under the contract limit?

Definitely less because I’m not moving Yegor for Foote and Muk. I still feel like it’d end up being Yegor instead though. We’d probably end up taking randoms to make the contracts work

Is this remotely legit? It comes from a Twitter account with 35 followers.

EDIT - also the person they credit in the tweet posted this:

One last edit - the person quoted in that tweet actually wrote this:

___

Masisak had an article today on the impact of the Horvat trade on Meier. Essentially said the two are really close comparables as trade assets, the return for Horvat was underwhelming and Greier could potentially get more if he allows teams to negotiate a contract ahead of time (though I personally think this may benefit us, as it could allow Meier to force his way here if that's what he wants).

Masisak also throws out what some comparable packages to the Horvat deal may look like:

One name I not heard mentioned in any deal from the Devils that I think could be in there is Zetterlund.

Ah yes, comparing advanced stats of a guy on the third best team in the NHL today versus a guy on a team about to blow it up and rebuild. And even then barely any separation.

And if you cant see why paying Bratt the same as Meier is an issue than idk what to say other than google goals versus assists. Meier with Hughes will be a 40+ goal scorer who wed be paying a 17ATOI winger the same price to what, get more playmaking that we literally dont need?

Palat-Hughes-Meier
Tatar-Hischier-Mercer

Oh the horror! We lose a fast skating playmaking winger and replace them with a fast skating playmaking winger whod cost 4-6million less who paced for more in both his first two seasons (Mercer)... what ever shall we do!

The obsession by Devils fans over Bratt is clearly not seen the same way by Fitz or Bratt would be signed. His fair value is 8 and thats it, you can post all the advanced stats you want hes not better than Hughes or Hischier and im not paying my third best playmaker 9 million

Dawson Mercer is a better Jesper Bratt at 21. Were not paying Bratt 9m long term, so if you seriously believe that start getting your disappointment ready so it doesnt hurt as bad.

what...is this lol

talk about being out to lunch. Come on.

Jesper Bratt is one of the better wingers in the entire league. This teardown of him by some posters is absurd.

Those of you that want to keep everyone and acquire everyone are the ones who are so out of touch with how a GM operates. First to offer little first to suggest prospects are off the board etc etc

People want Meier without moving Holtz AND Sharangovich. Oh oh and we gotta pay Bratt 9m too. oh and then sign ten forward contracts this offseason all under the cap while still making outside upgrades. Dont forget we gotta resign Severson and Graves too, you know vets for Nemec and Hughes when they stink. Should also Look into moving dead weight like Wood Boqvist while adding outside talent but without picks and prospects

Yeah we get it, you are excited the Devils are finally good again. Except now is when you stop hoarding players and picks; or hey let Carolina get Meier, who cares right? We get to keep Sharangovich/Casey then!
