That's what I thought. ThanksHis Qualifying Officer is 10M next season, but that doesn't guarantee he'd get that on a long-term contract.

Yes, Meier has a qualifying offer of $10 million for next year.Maybe I read wrong somewhere but isn't he assured of 10 million for next season?
If it's the case, I'd try to figure out a way to lower the cap hit closer to 7, 7.5 per year.
As for the trade, I don't have an issue with it, I don't really care about not protecting our pick for this season as it doesn't seem it will be in the top 20 anyway
Or if acquired, Fitz tries to lower the cap hit by giving him an extra year (8)Yes, Meier has a qualifying offer of $10 million for next year.
So when you’re negotiating the agent is going to say year 1 is $10 million and years 2-7 are buying UFA years.
I imagine Meier will end up with a 7 year deal where he gets an extra $0.33 - $0.5 million per year over normal as a way to buy back the premium of that qualifying offer.
Both things can be true.Is it true Meier is vacationing in Mexico with Hischier, Siegenthaler, family and friends, or am I sucker for a bs rumor??

I’d really prefer to keep one of Holtz/Shara—we’re not exactly stacked on the wings either.Something like 1st + Holtz + Sharangovich seems in the ballpark. I can't imagine that Grier, being the kind of guy that he is, will accept a package that doesn't contain a roster player who can step in right now. He's not a tank/pure futures kind of guy. He will want his guys to compete and finish the year strong.
San Jose is 20th in goals scored, I think having a couple of shooters would be good for them (especially after moving on from Meier).
True, but doesn’t mean that can’t talk shop, at least a little bit…It might be true, but even if it is, it might not mean anything. The Swiss guys want to vacation together, that seems like something that might happen even without the trade rumors.
Maybe while they're at the swim up bar, something about Meier's future comes up and Nico says "wouldn't it be nice?", but I doubt they went on vacation together for the express purpose of tampering with him. That would be some real long term shit.
Thanks lolBoth things can be true.
The coaching staff doesn't know what to do with either of them, Holtz is in the press box and Sharangovich is on the 4th line. I don't think either is a big loss.I’d really prefer to keep one of Holtz/Shara—we’re not exactly stacked on the wings either.
I agree…we just need to hope one of Foote/Clarke/Gristyuk/Thompson/Filmon or dare I say Stillman to break out to complete the bottom six.The coaching staff doesn't know what to do with either of them, Holtz is in the press box and Sharangovich is on the 4th line. I don't think either is a big loss.
Plus, the whole point of this trade is to acquire Timo Meier, a winger. Meier/Bratt/Palat/Mercer is four quality wingers with Tatar/Zetterlund as pretty serviceable middle-6 guys.
Though I do agree that after this move the bottom-6 would need some attention, another minor forward add to help with depth. Someone like Nick Bjugstad or Pool Party might be a nice cheap addition.

Yes, I agree that we're in a really good shape and will be for some years unless we screw it somehow but the players you've listed, at least the group of forwards, would mean that we would be very top heavy, especially when removing pieces like Sharangovich and still developing Holtz (he can still put it up together and become a cost controlled top six forward) .Let’s say it’s both of them at 9. You’d have Jack, Bratt, Nico, Meier, Palat, Dougie, Siegs, Marino at a combined ~56 mil for the next 4 years. You’ve got Vitek at 3.4 for the next 2. You’ll have Luke and Nemec on ELCs for part of that. Sure it’s not the easiest thing in the world but we’d still be in really good shape
There’s more to those guys than just this season. Devils have a bunch of UFAs and another big contract will make cheap depth even more necessary. Regardless you have to give to get so it wouldn’t surprise me for some guys to go the other way but I doubt management would do it bc of short term fit issues. The coaching staff doesn't know what to do with either of them, Holtz is in the press box and Sharangovich is on the 4th line. I don't want to say that I'm 100% against trading for Meier but the assets needed to do that and his cap hit mean that it's improving our top six at the cost of depth.

It would kind of be funny if this board and Twitter are all busy speculating and the Devils guys don’t even know Meier is there too.they're all there right now with their wives/girlfriends. Are they there together? I don't think THAT has been confirmed yet, but yeah. You can kind of connect the dots I'd say.
Maybe Timo's just friends with everyone and wanted to vacation with them, nothing too crazy. Now, if Fitz was also on this trip then that'd be something! Or maybe he'd just want to hang out with the fellas
Is Mueller there with them?Is it true Meier is vacationing in Mexico with Hischier, Siegenthaler, family and friends, or am I sucker for a bs rumor??
But in a way, Meier has more control than in a normal trade in terms of where he could wind up going. A team he could extend with will return the biggest booty to San Jose.LOL you guys are hilarious. I don't think GM's make trade decisions based on which players hang out together on vacation. I mean, I'm sure familiarity could play a role, but it would be incredibly minor compared to other factors.
