Marino vs Ty Smith isn’t even close. Ty Smith was OK his rookie season (if you call playing less 50 games a “season”) but some underlying analytics were concerning. Last Year, woof!

Ty has the ability to score but he can’t out score his issues. Marino is better defensively, bigger and more mobile. Ty Smith “might” work out, but his mental game, needs some serious work. Plus, The Devils aren’t running a frat house. They need older players who have seen winning cultures.

I am not going onto the Pens page and trying to convince them Ty Smith sucks, like the Devils won a trade. He is a major question mark. How many times does the media pump offensive numbers?! Because it’s an easy stat to look up. He was super bad last season and Every prospect out played him.

Regardless, if he works out or not, the Devils don’t need him today or tomorrow.

Something tells me your frat house remark is more spot on than we will ever know.

He’s relatively small. He gets absolutely bullied net front and along the boards.

And not by like big guys either.

Here’s two examples.

How the hell is that first goal on Marino at all? He closes off the player but falls and Jarry gives up a horrible goal.

Hope you didn`t watch Smith on youtube.

Yeah. Smith is rough. Players like him seem to excel with Sullivan though plus Ruff isn’t our coach.

I never said the Penguins won the trade. Just that this perception that Marino is a shutdown D is false IMO.

He is a light beer version of Paul Martin as in he doesn’t know what he is. Enough skill with the puck that you think he’ll put up a 10 goal 40 pt season eventually. Enough IQ and defensive ability to be an effective player but he gets somewhat abused when the game turns physical.

How do you delete a quote from your response if you accidently quote the wrong person? I swear this place just always sucks on mobile.:banghead:

Never mind. For some reason it only shows up when I'm trying to post but doesn't actually show up on the board.

Anyway, I was going to say I'm always a bit suspicious when a poster goes to an opposing teams board after a trade to dump on the player they just traded them.

To be fair, Pens fans did try to warn us about Recchi too. Probably worth not dismissing it.

Recchi’s issues were obvious (if you took some time to look into it). I fully believe he was brought in to mentor Hughes, and the power play was secondary. That’s why Recchi didn’t get fired last season and why we have another year of Ruff.

Marino has his warts, but all he has to do to help improve the Devils defense, is play better than Ty Smith.

Everyone tries to warn us about everything. Panthers fans hated Deboer, then we tried to warn Sharks fans about Deboer, they tried to warn Vegas fans about Deboer, who are presumably warning Stars fans about Deboer. Deboer is a fine coach. Recchi isn't good, but people will likely find out that the issues with the power play go deeper than just firing him - I expect the PP to be better, but I don't expect it to be in the top half of the league.

Marino is fine. The two plays he posted as being examples of stuff that can't happen are ridiculous.

Any idiot could have told us Recchi was a bad hire for the power play. He made Crosby and Malkin look bad with a man up. That shouldn't be possible.

Crosby and Malkin do not have historically great power play results, and Recchi's results with Pittsburgh are not bad.

Pittsburgh PP rank

07-10: 17th
10-13: 6th
13-16: 7th
16-19: 2nd
19-22: 12th

Recchi's tenure corresponds with the Penguins being 3rd in the league in PP GF/60.

the thing with players like Marino is they are almost never going to be fan favorites, since they don't provide much offense and their "job" is to limit the opposition. His skillset was one that was sorely needed on this team....a guy that can be at least competent defensively and that can skate the puck out of our own end well. The Devils have enough offensively talented DMen (both present and on the verge of making it) that I don't care much if Marino doesn't score a ton.

thats why its kind of crazy that Siegenthaler is so well liked...though A) he passes the eye test and B) his underlying defensive numbers are tremendous

I tend to trust the fans who have been watching him for the last few years. If he's become the whipping boy out there, there's probably a reason.

They're probably in the same boat the other way around. They're probably overvaluing Ty Smith because of his draft position and don't believe what we say about his warts yet.

That being said, they have a coach who has a track record of reclaiming defensemen like Smith, and Marino, even with warts, fits a deep need for us, so maybe this just works out for both teams.

Why are we discussing this? Smith was a pile of garbage under us and in no scenario will we be a worse team with Marino. There is 0 chance we lost this trade. We are better just from the fact of not having Smith.

Yes, I agree with this. I think we are a bit better positioned for the deal to work out for us, but generally it seems to work for both teams.

NJ fans could give an earful to whoever signs Severson next season and provide video evidence of various miscues. The reality is he's a good to very good NHL defender overall. He makes mistakes and looks awkward at times. Every non-elite NHL defender has their less than stellar moments. Some of it is how the team is structured. You only have to go back two playoffs to see COL get eliminated and Girard and even Makar get heavily criticized. Colorado didn't abandon its style of play and it worked out. If PIT was asking Marino to do more than he should of course he will look worse. Like Severson on a first pair versus Severson on a mid pair. I'm sure Marino has struggled as he's been asked to up his minutes and competition. Hopefully NJ can keep him consistently on a third pair and he can flourish. I'm still not sure about the PK criticism if he's competent defensively but we will see.
