I think while that's a possibility, it is an extremely remote possibility. Marino is cost controlled for like 4 more years. Severson is due for what will be a pretty substantial raise. I'd be fine with that being the case but I think that's a very remote possibility.
Yeah financially it makes no sense, age wise it makes no sense and assets wise Fitz isn’t gonna flip a former first rounder who’s still only 22 or whatever himself just hoping to flip Marino for even more down the road like he’s a real estate agent. They got Marino for long term, if they were planning on keeping Severson - presuming he isn’t just being Jesper-esque wanting to get to FA - then it would have been worked out already.

About that point in the off-season where my sadness from last year is gone and I'm just excited for the new season to start

This is the year folks!

I'd say there's about a 10% chance Severson is re-signed by the Devils. I'd say the chances of Graves getting re-signed are much higher than Severson being re-signed, but I think neither will be re-signed.

I'd bet we will be entering the 2023-24 season with this D-core:

RHD
Hamilton
Marino
Nemec

LHD
Siegenthaler
Hughes
Okhotiuk
B. Smith
Bahl
Muhkamadullin

Pretty much a lock IMO unless they move Bratt next summer.

Johnsson deserved some pumping at the start of this season considering he had 17 points, with 9 goals, in his first 19 games.

It was clearly a hot streak, even though some people were in denial about the Bratt-Mercer-AJ line’s potential longevity, but I will admit thinking he would get to 20 goals. And I felt bad that he didn’t (only 13, poor fella, he does try).

I find this whole “I lash out to just balance the overall board reaction to player X” stance… not fruitful?

People just end up exaggerating the uniformity, drama and wrongness of the supposed take. And then the reverse can often happen in reaction.

If people don’t like Severson being praised for things he has done well in the last few seasons, while playing top minutes, then that’s too f***ing bad for them I guess.

And if people expect the bitching about his brain farts to go away before he does (or even after) well, good luck with that.

I don’t want to seem like I’m pretending to be completely above this sort of thing. I’m Team Damon yet resigned to the bashing, but I have my own hot buttons. (I get immediately cranky when people here fixate on 4th liners, like they win or lose us games. I’m trying to let it go because that’s an eternal feature here.)
It's an eternal feature on every NHL team site. The depth of arguing over 4th liners is ludicrous.

I've spent a lot of time shredding 4th liners. Especially when they try to squeeze every bit out of them by playing them higher in the lineup like they have some kind of ''Untapped'' potential.

That said, I haven't had much of an issue with our current 4th line players in the last year, with the HUGE exception of the need to play Mason Geertsen.

Geertsen and players like this don't belong on our team or any team in the NHL. They've become greatly endangered species in the NHL over the last 10 years, almost to the point of extinction, but not quite to that level just yet. As a very select number of teams still use them. And I mean a very select number of teams.

The Devils not being one of them for the better part of the last 8-9 years (save for Kurtis Gabriel in complete garbage time in 18-19 and a very limited number of games for Luke Gazdic in 2016-2017), until just last year with Geertsen.

Yet, for no good reason they re-signed him and he will likely take up a veteran slot ususallly used by AHL teams to give them extra scoring punch, top 2 centers to feed top wing prospects up front, or key defensive d-men to lock down their team defense. Geertsen can do none of these things.

With any luck he'll be put on waivers and the Rags will take him back.

I don't think they have much use for him though. Not at the NHL level, which is how he got put on waivers in the first place.

So whats the deal with Bratt

If its come February and no keaningful conversations have been had and you get good offers for him; are we shopping him at that point?

Or are we forcing it to the offseason to try and negotiate a third time and , if no, trade him then? Idk how that affects his value but I imagine it cant be good

Devils draft better!
Sure but let’s talk about those walk up songs. You want Bad to the Bone and Hell’s Bells feel free. Enter Sandman is retired. Mariano Rivera warming up to that in the prime of his career was one of three most intimidating things I’ve ever seen in pro sports.

I would use "Entry of the Gladiators".

Triple H's song for a while would be a good one. Or maybe Bautista's and do a little machine gun impersonation.

I agree that Geertsen is not needed anymore but we should have at least one “unstable“ player like Wood who is crazy or dumb enough to make the other team worry about him possibly doing something insane like taking his skate off and trying to stab someone with it if someone messes with one of our youngsters.
