Brooklyn via NJ, like the Nets
To find something to complain about, because there has to be something, I still don't like the Palat deal. I hope Arizona is still a team in 3 years so we can dump him.
They'll be a team, but God willing they'll be in Houston.
Johnsson has low key one of the worst contracts I ever seen. Not only was he overpaid but to have the NMC is insult to injury. Like who on earth gives such a garbage player a NMC? A NMC should only be given to some of the best players in the league not 3rd/4th line scrubs.
Pretty telling that Dom's worst contract column had our worst contracts as Hamilton and Palat, and by a fairly healthy margin. Don't build through free agency, friends.

It does seem like an over payment by at least 1 million. But we should wait and see him play, maybe he has great chemistry with someone and might even out play his contract. The term is long, but now is not the time to worry about it, let's just enjoy while he's on top of his game. Who knows how he'll age or if we even have him 3-4 years from now.

I also remember someone (@Guttersniped, I believe) mentioning that the contract is also pretty "buyout friendly" in the final 2 years.

I was saying a little while back that Tatar buyout/Johnsson to AHL is the easiest way for us to create some cap room in a pinch. I doubt we'd see Tatar bought out though, unless the team is uncertain they will be able to LTIR Bernier.

Looks like if we bought out Palat the annual cap hits would be:

$3.53M, $2,53M, $1,48M, $1.48M - if the final two seasons are bought out

$2.7M, $1.65M - if the final season is bought out.

The Johnsson in the AHL option is an intriguing one but might not be quite enough. If he was in the AHL all season it would give us 1.075M in cap relief.

So
1.075M (Johnsson relief)
+0.073 (current space)
+0.160 (relief Bahl/Okhotiuk replacing Nemec)
= 1.308M in cap space (approximate)

And that would be with 21 players on the roster. Without Zetterlund contract and Holtz, Foote, Geersten or Thompson call-up. Would need 2 of those guys on the roster which would take us just over the cap.

Johnsson traded even at 50% retained would do it but we’d be tight.

This whole situation is dependant on Bernier and may not matter if he’s on LTIR for a while and say someone else is on it by the time he comes back.

But if we can get rid of Johnsson we definitely should IMO even if there’s a little cost with it.

The nice thing about all this is that we have a lot of money coming off from these average veterans next off-season.

I’m not concerned about the cap but the fact that this roster is at the top of the cap is absolutely comical lol. One look at it is a meh

really weird way to look at roster tbh...some teams right now that have similar/less cap space than NJ or are over the cap: Montreal, Vancouver, Washington, Philly, Columbus, etc. who also have "meh" rosters. Colorado just won the Cup and are in the bottom half of the league spending wise as it stands right now.

spending a lot =/= being good

8 players are UFA next year (25 million) and majority are expendable. This is being way overblown.
Yeah that’s fine still doesn’t change what I said. I’m not worried about it but just well it’s just just I guess

Johnsson + 3rd for Future Considerations, come onnnnnnnnn
No need to waste an asset to trade him.

The cap relief for burying a player is 1.1 million. If Johnsson doesn’t produce, he’s going to be buried in the minors. If the Devils accrue enough space with Bernier/Wood/anyone being on LTIR, they should be able to have a full roster if they decide to send Johnsson to Utica.

Looking at the roster make-up, I can’t help but to think the Devils are really primed to eventually make a hockey trade at some point in the year.

I could absolutely see one of Severson or Graves moved for forward help mid-season if the young kids don’t cut it and the Devils are in the playoff hunt. Very similar to Henrique-Vatanen deal addressing both teams’ needs. Severson for Miller is the first thing that comes to mind as a swap that could make a lot of sense for both sides.

But they haven't hurt us, have they?

What moves have we been prevented from making because of contracts?
People are literally arguing it prevented us from extending Bratt long term…which I don’t buy for a second since it presumes the player actually wants to sign long term (which Bratt didn’t earlier in the offseason when we had more room) but that’s the argument. Not to mention Fitz was prepared to spend even more on JG so there was a plan.
