That doesn't really help if you don't know someone is gonna claim him for sure, which with his cap hit and everyone's cap situation they might not. You need to have an AHL contract (= 2 way contract, or 1 way AHL contract) for the cap hit not to count when player is in the AHL. Retaining 50% and trading him (even for future considerations) might be the best way, if you really need to clear cap space.
Agree and understand.

But, waiving him gets around the no-trade.

Johnsson is still a viable NHL player. His cap hit is higher than necessary, but for a cap floor team, he’s likely an upgrade in talent that costs very little. So, likely in my mind that someone (Az) picks him up.

Of course, I might be too optimistic about this.

The only two candidates for buyout (over $4M AAV) are Tatar and Bernier. However, I don't know if Bernier is eligible. I think he is because I don't think they've officially put him on LTIR. Bernier's buyout hit would be $1.55M over this year and next. So they'd save $3.1M this year but tack on $1.55M next year. If this team plans to spend to the cap, even that $1.55M would come in handy. However, if they LTIR him, they can't accrue cap space and certain bonuses and whatnot also get tacked on to next year.

Tatar's buyout hit would be $2.3M this year and $1.1M next year. Only would save $2.2M this year.

The obvious answer is to give away Andreas Johnsson to Anaheim, Buffalo or Arizona. Those kind of teams, wouldn't they love to pay $750,000 in actual cash for a $3.4M cap hit? Although if I were him those three teams would be on my 10-team no-trade.

If the Devils can make a trade with Johnsson, that would be great, they could e.g. trade Johnsson for Anders Bjork and stick Bjork in the minors. But I think waiving him will suffice, he was a fine 3rd line wing last season.

does he know something, or just conjecture..?

It's a fairly blatant move they almost certainly need to make. Bernier puts them 4.5 under the cap which is nice but I wouldn't be surprise if Johnsson is gone before camp.

The biggest question left to debate is who gets to take Zacha's place in the Nico-Bratt-X gatorade cheers. Jack seems like an easy favorite but maybe Zetterlund is a dark horse.
Siegenthaler bc he's Swiss or Boqvist because he's Swedish. Or Jack because they'd have a United Nations vibe.

I think the team is largely set at this point, aside from a spot open on D for one of Bahl, Okhotiuk, Nemec or Walsh. Have to figure Bahl and Okhotiuk have the inside track here.

A buyout for Tatar accomplishes little and puts this team in a worse spot next season. Let's see how Tatar and Johnsson perform in contract years - if I recall correctly, Johnsson had a solid start to the season last year. The only "issue" I see if if Holtz really lights it up this preseason and shows he deserves a roster spot as there's nowhere to put him. In that case, it's still not the worst thing to let him marinade further in the AHL until injuries hit or you waive someone like Johnsson or see if it's relatively cheap to deal him at 50% retained.

BTW, it's odd going to CapFriendly and not finding the Devils at or near the bottom of the list of teams. That's going to take some getting used to.

How the heck were we supposed to afford gaudreau? Palat wouldn’t have been signed but still
I can't remember if we had already qualified the RFA's before the first day of UFA or not? I think they have to be qualified by the start of UFA?

I was gonna say then in that case we just wouldn't have qualified Wood, so his salary plus Palat's and we still would have been short a few hundred grand.

But like I said, I think Wood was already qualified, so good question. We definitely would have been using LTIR for Bernier (or Wood) and that's if we aren't already gonna wind up using it on him.

We could have tried to throw a 2nd-3rd round pick to somebody to take Johnsson or Tatar?

In the end, we might not have gotten Marino. His salary is over $4 million and that's over $3 million more than what Smith was making.

if they had signed Gaudreau, there would be no Palat so keep that in mind

basically at that point it is just a matter of dumping Johnsson somewhere even if it means giving up a mid round pick to do it

Not to be the word police but using LTIR allows a team to go over the cap. Bernier going on LTIR does not put them under.

It's great that we're spending, but the roster still needs a lot of work.

And yes I know that it's money we'll use from Bernier, Tatar, Johnsson and Wood...but that doesn't really help us much this year.

It's also funny because those were all deals we were happy with at the time and how they were "short term, low risk and wouldn't hurt us". Really puts into perspective how terrifying contracts like Palat can be.

Honestly I think they should move Tatar. Johnsson plays a tougher game and I think ruff likes him a little more. He was great with Mercer-bratt. Tatar plays a softer game but it may be more difficult to move his contract

Ehhh…since everyone is signed with the exception of Zetts, wtf do we talk about for the next 5 weeks until camp opens?

-Hughes’ wide turns?
-Gaudreau’s love of all things Columbus?
-Jim’s newly revealed “stamina”?
-Picking a new player we can all bash since Zacha is gone? I vote one of Johnsson/Tuna

I don't want to touch the first 3 on your list, but I'll take a stab at predicting who the new whipping boy will be. My guess is one of Tatar, Shara if he has another slow start, or surprisingly Hamilton if he doesn't return fully to form after his injury troubles last season. Johnsson might not be playing often enough to really get criticism.

And no doubt Hughes will draw flak from the usual suspects if he isn't scoring at a 2 ppg rate. And maybe even if he is.

Tatar is easily a better player. And Tatar would be easier to move. If you retain 50% on Tatar there would definitely be suitors IMO. I’m not sure anyone would be that interested in Johnsson even at 1.7M. If there is people interested in him at that then we should just do that IMO. Tatar is a better player with more skill and is a good bounce back candidate.

People actually thought the Devils weren’t spending on social media?
To be fair, I'm not sure there is a great case for spending a lot on social media. I mean, just get a couple of low paid interns and tell them no swearing or double entendre and be done with it. Does a big social media budget really move the season tickets or help the on ice product?
