To be fair, it's new management in Arizona. They didn't have a 1st in 2020, but I really like their pick in Guenther in 2021 (as well as Doan in the 2nd). Cooley, Geekie and Lamoureux is also quite the 1st round this year.
True.

Well time will tell if this new management made the right choice here.

Personally, I think Wright is more of a sure thing than Logan but we'll see.

Maybe a bargain vet can fill that role. I kind of doubt it though, given guys who can win faceoffs are valued in the league. Defensive wingers can be had for cheap, defensive centers who win faceoffs are not nearly as cheap.

We are not promoting a rookie to play the role McLeod played this past season. Maybe you promote a rookie to play 4th line, and distribute the difficult assignments McLeod has played amongst Hughes and Haula(Nico was already playing tough minutes) but a rookie is not coming in and getting McLeods assignments.
I don't have any meat in this conversation, but in order to put a rookie in that spot, you'd have to go out and find one. There are no rookie centers to be had in the Devils system, certainly not in Utica. So, "promoting" one is out of the question.

Did Tyce Thompson play much C in Utica?

Im sure the Devils could move Johnsson or Tatar pretty easily. Really only need to move one.

They could buyout one of Johnsson or Tatar. Tatar gives the the most savings now. But Johnsson gives them the most savings on the cap next year if they decide to buyout someone.

Im not sure if they can buy out Bernier but that might make sense also.

They probably don’t trade for marino

Or let Miles walk or trade him if there was value there.

Or force trades of Tatar and Johnsson which clears 7.9 million in cap space.

Or do something with Bernier (trade, LTIR, Buyout)

Woulda been curious to see how they would have fit tkachuk in if he decided to come here

I have no clue how that would even look without trading Bratt. Maybe Johnsson or Tatar as a cap dump + Severson and then whichever forward wasn't in a Calgary trade for Tkachuk traded in a different deal.

Johnsson doesn’t make over $4M AAV so he can’t be bought out in this window.

The trade market it completely dead. There’s zero chance of trading of trading Tatar and even Johnsson would be very difficult without sweeteners. Maybe Johnsson with a bit of cap/salary retained would appeal to budget teams because he would be making less than 750k at that point.

You can’t buy out a player making less than 4m in the second buyout period, so we can only buy out Tatar. You can’t buy out a player on the LTIR (that’s not in the CBA but it’s understood to be a rule).

Tatar has signing bonus so the cap hit is not much savings.

That’s 2.33m + cost of replacement vs. 4.5m

(That’s huge lol but whatever.)

The Tatar buyout or Johnsson cap dump might happen, they are the most obvious doable ones. The buy out sucks and people need to realize that a bunch of teams are trying to move guys right now.

Highly highly doubt Tatar is bought out. Could see a Johnsson trade but that might cost us too much. If it came down to it we could probably trade Tatar 50% retained when necessary and possibly even get something back. Tatar at 2.25 for 1 year could have some value to somebody. At the very least it shouldn’t be some costly cap dump.

It depends who we’re trading the player with. Many of the teams a lot with cap space left (all of them?) will actually care more about the salary than the cap hit.

Tatar at 50% gives both teams 1.625m salary with a 2.25m cap hit.

Johnsson makes 750k in salary. If we retained 15% then that’s 637.5k in salary. That moves 2.975m of his 3.5m cap hit.

So Johnsson’s salary helps. His 10 team no trade list probably doesn’t however.

I assume Johnsson just gets waived at some point.

I wouldn't buy anyone out or pay assets to get someone off the books at this point. Wait it out until next season and a huge portion of it comes off the books. It would be good to get Z signed, that's the last piece to figure out.

That doesn't really help if you don't know someone is gonna claim him for sure, which with his cap hit and everyone's cap situation they might not. You need to have an AHL contract (= 2 way contract, or 1 way AHL contract) for the cap hit not to count when player is in the AHL. Retaining 50% and trading him (even for future considerations) might be the best way, if you really need to clear cap space.

Ehhh…since everyone is signed with the exception of Zetts, wtf do we talk about for the next 5 weeks until camp opens?

-Hughes’ wide turns?
-Gaudreau’s love of all things Columbus?
-Jim’s newly revealed “stamina”?
-Picking a new player we can all bash since Zacha is gone? I vote one of Johnsson/Tuna

-Complain about Fitz's negotiations with Bratt
-Make fun of Bratt's agent

(although I guess we could and have been doing that in the Confirmed Link thread....)

Oh I know!

-Speculate on who the new Devils Play-By-Play announcer will be
-Speculate on what Joe Shmoe off the street gets hired to be the new Public Address Announcer
-Think about what outfit Erika Wachter will wear this coming season.
