As we head into the final stretch, consider a few things -

Tyler De.llow had a post years ago on his blog that Swedes were the most underpaid nationality in the NHL, and Russians were the most overpaid. May no longer be true, but something to think about.

Matt Cane did the research into who gets paid what and found that low draft picks are continually underpaid their whole careers whereas high draft picks are often overpaid.

Agents should be aware of both of these things and try to push back against them, but who knows if they actually do.

Clarkson contract was the turning point in Toronto re: 1980s hockey strategy it sure seems. Not sure if it's a direct link but sure seems like they brought in Shanahan/Dubas cause it was such a disaster.

I think Fitz realizes this and is playing hardball with Bratt. He can always go to arbitration, sign the player for one year, and do this all again next year. Making it a pretty big gamble for Bratt, risking injury or regression could cost him millions of dollars. Not as much incentive for Fritz to cave, other then keeping the player happy.
It’s frustrating, but I really don’t mind what Fitz is doing right now. I honestly trust him with this team. He has a vision and is executing, without jeopardizing the future. He’s doing a good job so far.

The hockey guy did a 2015 redraft and had Blackwood at 22nd overall to the Capitals. He also debates putting him even a higher a few spots before that at 17th overall, but ultimately decides against it after realizing just how bad of a year he had

Yeah he has always liked him. It's just a matter of do you think last season and a half were a result of his injuries or the real Blackwood. As far as I can remember he was great in 20-21 until he got covid and looked good in his first few games last season. Some goalies just never get 100% healthy after injuries, so we'll see if MBW is the same.

While talking about Clarkson and Wood this morning, suppose Miles Wood signed a 2 year deal this offseason and had a 30 goal season this coming year and then a 25 goal season the next, with both being 45 or so point seasons, what kind of contract would he get in 2024?

He's the same age this season as Clarkson was in his 30 goal season in 11-12. Before Clarkson's last two seasons with the Devils he had 100 points in 298 games. Wood has 121 points in 326 games, so a little bit higher than Clarkson at the same age, but not by a whole lot.

If only Sweden had won the Battle of Poltava.

He would get over $6 million in that scenario...From someone.

Ugh, poor Clarkie. That cover was the worst thing that could have happened to him.
He was doomed as soon as he got the 10 game suspension in the preseason.

I personally think it was both.

I don't think a healthy Blackwood is likely to be as good as he was in 2019-2020, but also not as bad as last year. His mediocre AHL career is really the red flag for me.

His first AHL season was okay, probably about average. His second season was astronomically bad (Vanecek had a year almost as bad and I think it was the very same year) and his third season was less than average, but he also performed very well in the NHL that same year.

So that's what raises the red flags for me.

Vanecek had a better AHL career, but also played longer in the AHL than Blackwood got to.

I think he would get $6 million also. I'm not saying I would think it was a great contract or that I wouldn't be scared off by it, but I think he would get $6 million. Adjusted for inflation/cap inflation since 2013 that would still be less than Clarkson's $5 million in 2013.

Not gonna lie, I really like this coaching staff right now. Way more comfortable going into the season than I was last year. Especially knowing the collaborative nature of the staff. Having Brunette involved feels nice.

Yes, it is a lazy, dinosaur level way of thinking

GOALZ GOOD EVERYTHING ELSE NOT MATTER

I would hope that if you spend as much time as you do (and I do) posting on a message board about a hockey team we love, that you'd want to know as much information as possible about whether or not a player is good. Not just "MORE GOALS = BETTER"
Except that isn't what happened...Or what was said.

We are talking two players that have very similar PPG...Given that...Yes two players with similar point GOALZ = MORE BETTERS

That’s my feeling too, so far I really like Fritz’s vision for this team, and the moves he’s made. I’m trusting him, he obviously wants to keep Bratt, and our pay structure. He knows he has the upper hand in this negotiation, if he plays it right we’ll get exactly what we want.

and what if one of those players is abhorrent defensively (like Laine), while the other is passable? What if one of those players is a tremendous skater and transition player (like Bratt), while the other is just passable?

Boiling things down to ONLY goals or ONLY points when judging players is absurd to me.

Not to me. It is a direct outcome of their effectiveness. Everything else is just noise.

Prior to 2011-12, Clarkson's biggest contribution to the Devils was beating people's faces in. Not even grit and toughness, just pure goon stuff. Having a 30 goal season was a fluke and we all knew it at the time.
Playing about 25% of the time with either Kovy, Parise, Elias and Sykora tends to do that lol. Over half of that time on the PP too.
