You can go back and say “if this, if that” but at the end of the day that Kings team was better on paper and on the ice than the Devils. The better team won, which is how it should be (and usually is).
The Rangers' 2022 playoff run has entered the chat. :naughty:

That guy didn’t even come up with that trade rumor it looks like

The original guy’s rumor is more head spinning, the plagiarist simplified it lol.

We would give Columbus the 2nd? Start those Laine trade proposals back up lol.

There's something mordantly funny about BS Twitter rumor mongers arguing amongst themselves about stealing "credit". Credit for what? Nonsensical rumors that get clicks, but clearly have no real sourcing behind them? It's like arguing over who is the "real" Eklund.

The idea that those specific three teams could be involved in trade talks, and none of the high picks those teams hold are being discussed, strains credulity. How often does a three team trade happen, anyway?

This is as bad as that silly Maxim Lapierre crap about the Habs getting the #2 pick without sending us anything of value. Not worth thinking about.

1.) The source sucks and I don't buy it.
2.) But it's a fun thought experiment. The only thing I can think of is some kind of salary retention shenanigans, but that doesn't make a ton of sense. It would need to be CBJ retaining salary for a player getting dealt to NJ and I'm not sure why they would do that.

The guys that would need retention are guys like Anderson or Gallagher, but that would involve using a retention slot for FIVE YEARS of dead cap. No way that a third team would do that, and both of those guys really suck but I'm horrified that Fitz will target them becuz grit.

Hoffman or Dvorak have less term, and it's interesting that Dvorak has a NTC for 2023-24 and 24-25 but not for this year. So if MTL wants to dump him they'd want to do it soon. But again, neither of those seem like players you would need extra retention for.

An interesting idea would be something like NJ acquired Voracek (2 years remaining at 8.25M, 62 points in 79 games for CBJ this year) but MTL is the one retaining salary. Something like:

To NJ:
Voracek (27.3% retained = 6M cap hit)

To CBJ:
Hoffman
NJ's 2nd 2022

To MTL:
Zacha
NJ's 4th 2022
(2.25M dead cap through 2024-25)

Laine is the other one on CBJ that would make sense, but he's RFA so I don't know why we would need a 3rd team.

I don't think that's how it really works. Yes, obviously there is level of trust/authority but not in the way you're thinking. The GM sets the standard and a blueprint of what kind of players he wants, and then the scouts go find those players who fit those criteria. And this is why I'm kind of worried, Fitz drafting style has not looked very good. If for some reason you think it's not on the gm, just look at the drastic differences in the drafting from shero to fitz with largely the same scouting staff.
I'd have to agree with everything here.

You don't go from 5th/6th round picks of Gritsyuk/Moynihan in one year to 5th/6th round picks of Shlaine/Baumgartner the very next year without a major change in draft strategy.

The scouts were the same between 2019 & 2020, but the GM was different. And there was a clearly different approach to the draft in those two years.

All the talk is about the #2 pick right now, and understandably so, but the Devils have 8 more picks the rest of the way and how Fitzgerald strategizes them is extremely important to the future of this franchise.

? I’m talking about winning the cup. And you can argue they were the better team when the opponent was an aging Pittsburgh team starting the third string goalie and a Carolina team that has failed to prove anything in the playoffs (and also was playing their backup goalie).

I would trade #2 for #6 and #12 (from CBJ) and then use one of those two picks to trade for a Meier or Tkachuk
I'm in on that trade as well though I wouldn't then trade the #6. I want one of the RHD at that spot.

I don't think Tkachuk is a realistic option, but Meier could be, and I'd be in on Meier for the #12, add Smith or whoever as needed

That would be a huge draft day for NJ.

I tried like 5 times last night on multiple browsers and I finally was able to subscribe. the NJ.com website looks/feels like it's from the early 2000s.

10 bucks a month to read his articles? I don't mind that considering he's churning them out like crazy as opposed to the void of nothing-ness we got before.

Difference between Pitt and Rag's was solely in net, otherwise Pitt was by far the better team, aging or not.

To the general point how often does a "weak" team win the cup? Not often. How often does the "best" team win the cup, not as often as maybe you suggest.

I was mostly joking anyways, but I thought you were talking about individual series. I definitely think the Pens and Hurricanes outplayed the Rangers, but Igor's gonna Igor.
