* Bahl,
* McLeod,
* Graves,
* Tatar,
* Bastian,
* Boqvist

I put them in the order of potential impact for 2023-2024.

Bahl progressed so well and he's still got upside.

McLeod just stepped up his game against Carolina when others shrank AND he's a stud on the faceoffs. Feel like you gotta keep him.

Gravey, Tatar-Tot, Bastian, Boqvist...any feel "special/great chemistry/hard to replace"?

That's it, right? $10 M of cap space, a draft and probably 4 of those 6 players?
Consensus seems to be Tatar is a goner. Graves too. For different reasons but both are now just squeezed out.

Boq maybe hangs around as cheap depth with upside.

Bastian is a rock I think they will, like with Mikey, want to keep around at the right price.

Surprised to see the backlash on McLeod here. He was one of their top 5 players in the playoffs, eye test. Analytics not so much. Was hoping he can use the new found confidence to springboard into next season, he became much more patient with the puck, the move on Eegor alone was huge. I think he was played above his role out of necessity towards the end (3C) but imo he's a more than serviceable 4C. Term/salary are obviously huge but I'd like him back.

The Team Canada off-ice stuff notwithstanding...

Nobody said they don't want him back. What I (and a few others) have said is that we don't want him signed for 5 years.

Some thoughts on Hellebyuck

*if the cap isnt going to rise by 3-5M every season for the next half decade, then tough decisions will most certainly need to be made by year 3-4

Winnipeg would need to retain at least 30% on his final year. We could afford to sign him to 8x8, length to keep the number down plus youd be moving him toward the end anyhow.

As for value going back we have more leverage so Id expect it be Schmid+Boqvist+'23 2nd; or if we want Vanecek to go it may take Holtz+'23 4th. Maybe throw in a middling prospect to either

The thought process is the cap rising in conjunction with our signings creates a perfect storm that allows for us to squeeze out more, bigger deals than most contending teams ever could due to the structure and separation in which they signed

By the time Luke and Nemec need deals (Mercer can still be fit-in at under 7), youd have moved on from Palat Haula and one of Marino or Siegenthaler. Having Casey McCartht and Edwards should help us save some money down the line.

Itd require some tightrope-finagling of contracts for RFAs but would also allow us to stay clear of the free agent market outside of forward depth. I do believe this can be done and I hope Fitzgerald sees the same advantageous timeline

We need to remmeber pending suspension potentially with McLeod …

Bastain Lazar Foote Holtz (unless traded) and McLeod (pending suspension?) leaves boqvist as the odd man out

He scored 19 regular season goals the last 3 years in 209 games. I thought he was a goner for sure before the playoffs started.

Lazar would do a better job at ES, worse on the PK, to be fair.

Net result is pretty similar though.
McLeod's ability to lineup for any important draw cant be understated; yes, faceoffs predominantly hold little to no value but a player who excels at them and can be plugged-and-played as needed extends past the typical conversation of a center

Can still stick Holtz in Utica.

Just repeating what's already been said at this point, but really not much left to do aside from sign the RFAs and bottom pair D and get to camp.

I suppose if anything did materialize to add some form of depth on a 1 year deal just to use up our cap space that would be worth doing, but I'm really quite confident going into next year with this group.

Meier-Hischier-Mercer
Bratt-Hughes-Toffoli
Palat-Haula-Holtz
Foote-McLeod-Boqvist
Lazar, Bastian
Siegenthaler-Marino
Hughes-Hamilton
Bahl-Guy
Smith
Vanecek
Schmid

If that isn't the best group in the league, it's damn close.

Goaltending is the only question mark. Vanecek Schmid is a huge blind spot.

And it's all mostly locked up long term.

Wouldn't be surprised if Fitz kicks the tires on Hellebuyck as a rental and hopefully makes him just want to be here for a year. There's not much more you can do if you're Fitz trying to entice Saros or Hellebuyck to leave their respective teams for NJ

Part of me thinks, we get a goalie at the deadline but then you run into the whole issue of learning new teammates + how their system is as a goalie. Logan Thompson or Hellebuyck would be fine by me

Not Huala. Haula. Think "We will have a haula stanley cups soon."
I knew there was no way I could list the whole team and not have a typo somewhere.

I get thinking this way, but I think there's recency bias in not believing they can provide at least league average goaltending. I'm comfortable enough sacrificing in goal to have one of the deepest groups of skaters out there.
