I've said it before, but I'd definitely sign a non jailed McLeod to a 5 year deal.
I think the issue here is a long term deal for McLeod would have a higher AAV than the Devils like.

It’s better to go cheaper for 3 years and letting him cash in as a UFA to make up the money he passed up.

Source is crap, but lets see what's up

I'm not sure how I'd feel about MIkey on that type of deal. I've been expecting 3 years, 2 million per for Mikey. If it's 4 at 2.5 - 2.8, I don't know how to feel. I don't think it's egregious or anything, but seems slightly unnecessary
It’s just a waste of 1M that you’re locked into.

I’m not as big a hater as I was pre playoffs, but he’s eminently replaceable and guys like him are available every year. No need to commit term to that.

Mikey 5 year looks like that Kampf deal.

No interest.
Kampf is a guy Toronto leans on pretty heavily. Most defensive faceoffs on the team. Most PK minutes amongst fwds. Actually contributed 27 points this year.

I don't see that as a bad deal.

Sign the younger Mikey for less AAV and that works out well for the Devils.

McLeod was a top-5 faceoff taker and carries the load of his line defensively and with his speed

I disagree he is replaceable, at least in the sense we'd be getting back an equivalent player. Fourth liners have value just like a backup goalie does

Big fast 26 year old face off ace's are available every year?

Yes they have value, but not 2.5+ over 4-5 years.

If your carrying skill is faceoffs, like that’s the first thing people mention about you, that’s a guy you can replace sorry. And he’s not really a defensive ace either, as every single stat shows.

He’s a very good PKer, and that’s not nothing, but that’s not a dude you overspend on.

Does it though? I do like Mikey, but he scored all of 4 goals last year, he's here with his BFF, and he does carry some baggage.

But my thought here is lock him up on the cheap. If it costs more to actually do so, then yeah, no.

no 4th liner should ever, ever be signed longterm. Ever. Not even the best 4th liner in NHL history.
That's one opinion.
