Devils team discussion (news, notes and speculation) - 2023 offseason part II

I'm not saying goalies aren't valuable, the problem is paying a premium for 1 cup run is far too risky an investment. There's a difference between having Vasilevskiy signed through his prime years, Oettinger on his ELC and Shesterkin signed through his prime vs trading for a rental Hellebuyck.

What’s paying a premium?

The jets can ask for schmid but the devils have the leverage. He doesn’t want to resign there it’s the final year so that will drive down the price of the trade. Not many contending teams looking or can afford. Vitek would be a good place holder for them and they can flip him again. They know they aren’t a win now team and if they don’t? Oh well
There is 100% other teams in this that can make it into a bidding war. And why are people saying they know they aren’t a win now team when that’s clearly what they’re trying to do. Why do you think the PLD package looked the way it did. Their GM is also probably running out of time to get results. This isn’t a team looking to rebuild. They will be looking for contributing roster players in return and someone out there will be willing enough to give them that.

Regardless of all that it’s likely too expensive and risky to make sense for the devils.

I suppose it would all come down to what we'd pay for him.

I'm beginning to get a little worried about our depth. Our extra forwards will likely be Holtz and Foote, followed by a lot of questionmarks like Clarke and Tyce Thompson.
Think there’s a chance we bring in one more. Just would mean Holtz might start in Utica if everyone is healthy

We DEFINITELY can't fit Helle's cap hit in if they take Schmid.
Yeah I think post-Toffoli there really isn't THAT much chance they fit Helly in cap-wise. I guess you could if they took Vitek back but even with that it's really gonna get tight assuming Timo signs and they have about $10 million left to fill the rest of the roster with a few back-end RFA's and kids.

Or we bring in a couple journeymen tweeners into Utica with the promise that they could potentially play with the big club if there's injuries.
Maybe. Otherwise I think our AHL call-ups are Clarke, Thompson, and Bowers.

But when I write that out I think there’s a very good chance they sign someone else. And/or maybe an AHL depth option or two.

Oh and maybe Stillman as a call-up. Know people won’t love that suggestion but think he may be closer than people think. But probably a year or two too soon

Yeah i mean I watched the same playoffs where our starters were pulled what 6 times in 12 games?
Both things can be true. Vanecek was poor in the playoffs and trading for Hellebuyck as a rental still isn't a good idea.

What’s paying a premium?
He's the number 1 goalie on the market with many suitors interested. Odds are it won't be cheap to acquire him.

Can someone list out some bottom 6 UFA options, bottom pairing D options and potential fringe NHL/AHL goaltending depth options?

Feel like those are the 3 signings we could be looking at.

I mostly agree with your points, but Oettinger wasn't the goalie for Dallas that year they got to the finals. Though I think he played a couple of games strictly in relief.

That was actually Anton Khudobin, which is up there pretty high on the list of rando goalies making the cup finals. That was actually up there with Michael Leighton for most random goalie on a cup finalist. Not only was he a complete rando goalie, but also an older one as well.
point taken. i was thinking of another Otter playoff run where he dominated and became a household name for hockey fans.

thanks for correcting me. my mistake.

Assuming Winnipeg takes back VV in a trade, they would presumably be left with about $1 to $1.5 million in cap space (maybe anymore) with everyone else signed and 22 man roster. If the Timo number is what has been rumored 8.5 they can easily fit Hellebuyck (again this presumes VV going to the other way, which is a safe bet).

Our numbers are somehow very different. Maybe I'm paying more for our other RFAs?

Holtz + future 1st/Seamus Casey. If Philly isn't charging a premium for an in division trade I'd be much more interested in taking a long term gamble on someone like Carter Hart but I'm also just fine with going into the year with Vanecek/Schmid (maybe look to bring in Varlamov on a 1 year deal) and re-evaluating at the deadline.

What does our PP look like now?

PP1: Nico, Jack, Timo, Toffoli and Dougie
PP2: Haula, Bratt, Mercer, Palat and Luke

If Toffoli can be an option for the bumper spot, that could be a great PP addition. Is there room for Holtz? If Mercer can play C, then perhaps you bump out Haula.

I think re-signing the remaining RFAs will have the devils around 1.5-2.5m in space with this roster:

Bratt-Hughes-Toffoli
Meier-Hischier-Mercer
Palat-Haula-Holtz
Boqvist-Mcleod-Bastian
Foote-Lazar

Siegenthaler-Hamilton
Hughes-Marino
Bahl-Nemec
Smith

Schmid
Vanacek

There is 5m in potential performance bonuses so this amount of cap space will give them a nice cushion for that even though I doubt that it will be anywhere near that in actuality and allows them to accrue cap space for any in-season additions. But also enough space for a depth player add as well.
These are the forward lines I would think are most likely. You can move the top 9 around as needed but if Palat can bounce back, that is another piece.

I actually envision Foote or Lazar in at 4LW. I think Boqvist rotates in on the 3rd line.

Doubt we target forwards as we will have Boqvist, McLeod, Lazar, and Bastian. Plus guys like Foote and Clarke sprinkled in.

On defense for a bottom pairing role, you’re looking at Gudas, Clifton, Soucy, Kulikov, Holl, Mikkola, Stetcher, Holden, Schenn, De Han, Hagg, Pysyk. Not really much out there. Targeting a cap dump like Forbort/Reilly is also a possibility.

For goaltenders, you’re looking at Nedeljkovic, Stolarz, Greiss, Rittich, Subban, Dell, Tokarski, Lyon, Fucale, Hellberg, Stalock, Kinkaid, and a couple of unproven guys like Sheppard/DAccord who have posted good AHL numbers but haven’t gotten the chance.
