This would make me sad, but understandable. For his sake, I hope he gets a solid deal no matter where he goes. Tuna is a solid dude.
Pittsburgh seems to make sense, as they're going all-in and could certainly use more secondary scoring.
But...how do they fit him on the roster? They're already over the cap (by $79K according to CapFriendly) with a 22 man roster. Guentzel is only supposed to miss 5 games, so he's not eligible for LTIR. I know Dubas has mentioned putting guys on waivers, but who are the obvious candidates to clear room for Tatar? I'm sure he's going to be making less than the $4.5M with the Devils, but still would think it's at least in the $2-$3M range, unless he and his agent really played themselves. $3M+ wouldn't surprise me either.
A forward would surely have to be on the move as their top 4 D of Karlsson, Letang, Graves & Pettersson aren't going anywhere and nobody else makes more than $825K on the blueline. Looking at their roster, it looks like Jeff Carter and his $3.125M cap hit ($3.0M salary) is the only logical one to move and after his 29 points and a +/- of -16 (team worst by 3 goals) in 79 games last season. Carter is already 38 going on 39 on January 1st, so his contract would seem to have negative value.
Penguins have already given up their 2024 1st round pick in the Karlsson trade (top 10 protected), as well as their 2024 3rd round pick (Kulikov trade) and their 2024 5th round pick (Bonino trade - BTW, they got 9 games, 1 assist & a blown wild card spot out of the trades for Kulikov & Bonino) - leaving them with 2nd, 4th, 6th and two 7th round picks for the 2024 draft.
So, how the hell do they fit Tatar on the roster?
