Garbage goal specialist Timo Meier is going to feast this year and anyone involved will have their PP point totals increase.

I don't think Meier's a garbage goal specialist. There is a legitimate question of where to play him on the power play but I don't think it's going to end up being at the net front.

The reason I had "better" in quotation marks was absolutely a nod to talent rather than efficacy. I'm happy to have Haula over Zacha, particularly if Haula does re-sign on a reasonable contract.

I don't think trading the younger and more talented player 1-for-1 is always a losing proposition, but I do think doing it often is a good way to run yourself out of long-term value for short-term gain. I just view a Sharangovich for Henrique trade in a similar light and I don't love the idea of making a habit of those trades. Maybe I would feel differently if I were more confident that Henrique was the perfect fit like Haula was, but I'm not.
I agree with you on all of those points. Tinkering around the edges to address a need makes sense but you are right in my view that sending out talent is generally not the way to improve. Zacha and Shara are different players to me as well. Zacha had run his course with the Devils and needed to go somewhere he could just play without the baggage he had accumulated in NJ. I wish him well. Shara might still have more to give and seems happy in NJ. I'm meh on Henrique so sending Shara out for him would be meh to me. if Shara doesn't fit in NJ with a cap hit likely to be in the $4 mil per range it's hard to see Henrique being a good fit at almost $6 mil for the year.

When it comes to players who are 1 year away from UFA, age is nothing but a number. Sharangovich is 2 years away so I wouldn't want to make this deal, but there was no long-term value with Zacha at all, and there's very little with Sharangovich because of how arbitration works.

In both cases, there is no perceived value because neither guy is a consistent player. Neither is old and declining they just don't seem to be guys to get to that next level. To be fair, it's hard to get from that 20 goal plateau to the 30 plus goal plateau.

The only reason I still have an Athletic subscription is because I got a deal for $2 a month for the year. Dom’s player cards are interesting enough to make it worth it.

cutting ties with zacha was a win and recouping any assets for him was a win imo, and i'm especially happy it was haula even though i cursed his name constantly in the first 40 games when he robbed jack of like 10 extra assists.

zacha was a low effort, disappointing player who carried the high draft pick baggage. one of the most annoying things of all last season was reading praise for him being the exact same disappointing player but because the bruins were unbeatable and he played on a line with a 100 pt top 5 talent, people tried to dunk like we lost some super star in the trade with his whopping 21 goals and 57 points. we'll see how he does when the lineup thins out a little and he's asked to carry more load

If you lose retained salary slots when players get bought out of their deals at the new team, I can't see sign and trades becoming the trend.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine if/when Severson is bought out in Columbus and the Devils lose a retained salary slot, plus get a buyout cap hit because the Devils signed him to the deal before the trade, the middle round draft pick from the trade will not be worth it in the end.

Yeah that won't happen because the Devils didn't retain any of Severson's salary, so they won't get the retention slot penalty. The Coyotes retained on OEL before trading him, so that's the logic with them.

I don't believe the Devils will get any of the buyout penalties, either, because Severson was signed and traded before his new contract technically starts (July 1). Technically, he was traded on his current, expiring contract.

I was going to post this same reasoning so I’m in agreement.

I think at the basic level, the Devils never paid any of Severson’s current contract and so won’t be involved in any later contract shenanigans.

Ya, I think even that part doesn't matter unless we retain salary.

-edit-
Actually, it may have mattered in a front loaded contract and we paid some of it, but we didn't.

They announced the Bratt contract at 1:30 last week...

Someone none of us are talking about....

How about Ryan O'Reilly?
Intriguing if there is a way to make the salary work, but the market for him is likely to be too high to make sense for us. Tough to imagine him accepting a 1 or two year deal which is basically all we can afford to sign on another big dollar contract unless we don't re-sign Meier.

No, Amanda, he won’t.

I get that in her capacity she’s not going to write (or tweet) about how a two-time cup winner who was one of the top players at his position for more than a decade, who scored huge goals in the playoffs and got up off his deathbed to carry his team to a division, is on the outside looking in because of the crest he wore and no other reason, but in this one case I really really just wish she could leave it alone. It’s a sore spot.

whoa...Take it easy, my friend.

I'm as annoyed as you are that Patty isn't getting in right now.

But make no mistake, HE WILL get in eventually.

And Patty is young enough that he'll be around when that occurs.

He was too good a player (and won multiple CUPS) not to.
