I actually think Hanifin would be a nice longterm fit. He is honestly the exact type of defenseman that fits this team. Also, he’s definitely better than Severson.
No Hanifin isn't better. Their overall stats are very close and Severson has played the majority of his career on a bottom 5 team in the league.

But the fact that he is a LHD and Luke and Nemec are RHD makes him much more desirable for us

At this point in their careers I think it’s true but they were probably closer a few seasons ago. 5v5 impacts have been similar but Hanifin has been playing a tougher role over two seasons v Severson. Although being paired with Tanev for long stretches has helped.

Severson never in his career had a decent partner except for his first 20-something games of his career when he was paired with Andy Greene. Graves was probably the best partner he ever had after that.

Hanifin here has nothing to do with Dougie, lol. Hanifin here would be an indictment on Bahl/Siegs top 4 roles this year
Money-wise Hanifin would have something to do with Dougie.

Hanifin, Dougie, a new Luke contract, a new Nemec contract....32 million in 4 defenders?

Fair point

Just seems like a lot of disruption. Maybe that's what they want?

It's honestly more a move for next year then anything. Markstrom and Daws would probably be the tandem and a top 4 of

Hanifin-dougie
Luke-Nemec
Siegs/Bahl-Marino

Goal obviously being legit go and try and win a cup.

Obviously a major risk because that's an expensive blue line, but on paper it's also a really damn good one.

Tough call, glad it's not mine to make

The cap will rise, we'll still have Jack at an absurd deal for his value and we'll lose the Palat anchor even though he's playing well this year. I think the cap is being overblown but we do have to save for Luke/Nemec. Hanifin in would be the last bag would could give to an outside player coming in for a while.

Expensive Blueline and a 35 year old goaltender with Daws as the next up if anything were to wrong?

Markstrom only has 2 years left, think of him like how we brought in Subban for a test drive. If Markstrom sucks, the only thing that will suck is the value you gave up for him but you can easily move off of him in that case and try to figure it out again. That's absurd worst case scenario. If he's good, then you can have him around for 4-5 years a starter and then turn into a back up

Nothing of Hanifin and Markstrom coming here makes a lot of sense to me.

Maybe I'll change my mind later but I just don't see this as being good in anyway right now

I get it, I'm split on it as well. I think it'd make us a better team for sure but the return might be absurd for Calgary especially with an extended Hanifin.

4-5 years as a starter? He is 34 now he'll be 35 next season in January....he'll be 40 in 5 years.

Nah 2-3 years probably as a starter and then if he's good, he becomes the backup to Daws/Schmid hopefully. Markstrom doesn't play like a taxing style and I'm pretty sure he hasn't any hip/back surgeries (someone can correct me if I'm wrong)

I don't really know why people think this team has infinite money. Sure, for this season, they do, but they're going to have to pay out bonuses at year end which will end up on next season's cap. Throw in the Mercer contract, whatever that turns out to be, and the cap increase next season is already gone. They don't have a lot of bad money that expires this year. They cannot afford Hanifin.

I really don’t think we need another big money defenseman. We just need guys that can fit with Luke and Nemec and be solid.

Luke's partner is a bigger mystery to me lately, I think Nemec is gonna be so good you can pair him with anyone that is remotely decent. We might need to rip a team off like Colorado did the Islanders with Toews to pair with Makar to find Luke's stylistic partner.

One would assume Mercer is going the other way for an extended Hanifin, but yes I agree. They're approaching their last good acquisition via trade/UFA very soon. Have to use it wisely.
