Nobody said that the club is full of defensively strong players. Boqvist is one of the better defensive forwards. There's nobody forcing him out of the lineup and he's the least of our problems at forward but by all means, use him as a scapegoat.
Boqvist is not the least of our problems. He’s not the biggest, but his absolute inability to get on the scoreboard is Not Good.

Boqvist lack of scoring is less of a problem than every other forwards inability to score, that's all I'm saying. Pretty much everyone else had higher expectations going into the season.

It hasn’t gone well for Boqvist at all during the last 11 games even though that involves some poor luck while McLeod’s & Wood’s have really tanked.

Wood and McLeod were both scoring a bit above their heads before the recent skid.

This is merely regression to the mean of what they truly are.

Wood was on a 40+ point and 20+ goal pace about a month ago. It seems unlikely for him to have scored that much with the limited minutes he gets.

I have less problems with the lack of scoring and more with their defensive numbers completely going up in flames.

I'm not sure if they'll be willing to make any moves and retool at the deadline but with the Panthers quickly falling out of the playoff race I'd be very interested in calling them about Sam Bennett. Seems like the perfect fit for the Devils with his speed, forechecking and ability to play either center or wing. Would basically be a much better version of Haula, just not as good at FO.

Zero chance Florida trades a key forward signed for 2 years/4.425m after this season. I don’t see how they could afford to move him. (I would like him too, so I get it.)

They would dump Duclair over him in the short term. They’re probably moving on from Sam Reinhart to re-sign Luostarinen and Lundell and blah blah blah.

You're more than likely right but they did just sell the farm over the past two seasons and if they're out of the playoff picture come the trade deadline I could see them trying to reload and retool the team. Maybe that ends up being Reinhart (or maybe they just choose to stand pat) but I don't think Bennett is untouchable and I'd imagine our defensive prospect depth would be intriguing considering how lacking the Panthers are in terms of blue line talent.

They’re planning on competing in the next two seasons and Bennett and Verhaeghe are their two key value forward contracts. Those two guys seem pretty untouchable to me unless they got something really good back.

Are we giving them a cost controlled defenseman with similar value in return? I don’t see how we could and I don’t see them moving those guys for less than that.

Florida added Forsling, and more recently, Mahura for free off of waivers. They don’t need to move key roster players for players like that.

Unpopular opinion incoming:
I think Jesper Bratt should be moved to another organization. He’s a nice guy but not tough enough and not consistent enough. Problem with a guy like him if he doesn’t score like he did in the first 20 games is that he disappears - no physical presence. Get a guy like Timo Meier and I think he will score at the same level if not more as 63 and when he doesn’t at least he can rock some bodies and get into the dog-fight when needed. Jesper won’t be cheap and I think we should invest in a different asset at this stage.

I would love Bennett but we have a better chance at a guy like Duclair

Tbh, Bennett makes a ton of sense. It'd be the equivalent of subbing Boqvist with him and Severson with Nemec for next season, I'm almost positive the numbers are close or even like a 1M off which is pretty good upgrade at 3C even though you'd have to deal with Nemec's warts as a young dmen but Severson has them too. Also it would depend if Florida wants more minutes for Lundell which they could easily want but I think Florida attaches something good to Bob to move off more cap.

Until Palat comes back, I want to see Holtz stapled to Jack’s wing for the next two games. He’s not meant for bottom 6 minutes and he really hasn’t been put in the position to succeed. If he falls on his face, send him down. Put him on PP1 and see what he has. Detroit and the Blues are our next two…f*** it—give the dude a chance.

or, they could sign both longterm because they have plenty enough space to do so?

Bratt had a quiet ~10 game stretch or so but he has picked it back up recently. Plenty of offensive minded players go through streaks like that. Hes on pace for 82 points......

Far from given up on Holtz, though would use him in a big trade, but, I've seen this said about him many times and probably even said it myself a couple times.

But if I'm being honest and look at it from the outside, it reads exactly like fans of other teams with struggling prospects. It's the last line of defense a player has when the rest of the league's fans have given up on them or forgotten all about them. The final stage becomes only the team that drafted them fan's saying "usage" is the problem.

Players absolutely come back from it, and break out of it and get better, but it is 100% the last step in everyone, including the team itself, writing that player off for good.

As much as I would love this, I don't see how its possible.

I posted a full roster in one of the GDTs last week with both signed longterm and there was still like $3 million left over

Yea I saw that, but also saw you had Bratt at 8 and Timo at something we'd be lucky to get him at. After saying "nonsense" and "if you think Bratt isn't getting 8+, you are kidding yourself" to multiple people.

I like Bratt but, with Jack's rise to stardom and Nico finding his next level. Bratt is expendable. A guy you could make an actual hockey trade with!

What? Bratt is a year away from UFA, it is impossible to make a hockey trade with him. It's also so funny that Bratt clearly found a different level this year but everyone's forgetting about it because he had a rough three weeks.
