Far from given up on Holtz, though would use him in a big trade, but, I've seen this said about him many times and probably even said it myself a couple times.
But if I'm being honest and look at it from the outside, it reads exactly like fans of other teams with struggling prospects. It's the last line of defense a player has when the rest of the league's fans have given up on them or forgotten all about them. The final stage becomes only the team that drafted them fan's saying "usage" is the problem.
Players absolutely come back from it, and break out of it and get better, but it is 100% the last step in everyone, including the team itself, writing that player off for good.
As much as I would love this, I don't see how its possible.
