We suppress high danger chances well though - top of the league in fact. I think it's a systems thing
They are pressuring higher up the ice. Causes turnovers and keeps the puck well away from their net.

The way they play offense is their defense.

They’re like 8-0 or something after giving up the first goal. You obviously haven’t been watching.

We don’t run that swarm bullshit much anymore on the back end, no two D men chasing behind the net. They play a much simpler system back there now. Since McGill got here our defense has been freaking lights out, it’s night and day compared to last year.

Sure we’re putting up goals but it’s all stemmed from the back end, forwards are buying in too.
The trail the 2nd fewest amount of time in the entire league this season. And after today's game they might be first.

It's simply easier to play defense and make saves up 2-0 vs down 2-0.

The numbers you are quoting are the effect not the cause. These goalies this year are simply never playing from behind for large majorities of every game.

The goalies are being cocooned in great team defense.

I don’t even understand your point. It’s not team defense we just happen to magically have 2-0 leads?

Vancouver literally set a record blowing the most 2 goals leads this season. Leads aren’t magic.

We have leads because we keep possession and our smart with the puck. We aren’t passively defensive but we are different team.

We are also way more patient even when trying to get a goal. The team has matured at ton.

I get it, you didn’t watch most of the games but you have a theory based on all the goals we score.

Oh yeah, what about your other theory that we couldn’t possibly score this much. You even had random figures involving shooting % and god knows what else.

But you were wrong, we’re generating way more offense and it’s not just an improved PP (but that helps).

The team is way better defensively. Remember when you briefly cared about how a forward played defensively because you needed something to criticize Hughes about? He’s doing more.

And the guy you wanted to ship out for parts is getting talked up for a Selke.

Next week is going to be tough as both Edmonton and Toronto will be looking for revenge after shocking them in their barns

Edmonton is the one that scares me the most. First game off a road trip, we can't come off flat like we did against Calgary after we came back home or else the Oilers are gonna drop 3-4 in the first period even without Kane. Plus they actually matchup up pretty well speed wise with us. That's gonna be a game where the special teams comes through for us, I feel.

How in the world can you say them hardly ever trailing is not due to improved defense or goaltending. That just makes no logical sense. It’s a combination but the fact that they’re playing well defensively and their goaltenders have been average stops the other team from scoring goals that would put them in the lead.

We all know they haven’t trailed much. Everyone does. Goaltending and defence is a massive part of that.
When we have trailed we’ve gotten it tied up quickly. We’ve been very good at responding when other clubs score.

As to our D, I don’t see how anyone can watch this team and fail to see how completely different our team defense is to prior editions. We are smothering the opposition defensively but using that to generate turnovers and scoring chances. Even when pinned in our own end we have been patient and not given up many Grade A chances.

One can legitimately say our schedule has been relatively soft so far. But no one can take away how impressive and dominating we’ve been on this streak at both ends of the ice. This club is for real.

Yea they trail the fewest amount of time, look how many games they won, but that doesn't take away all the times they actually have been trailing.

Why does this matter? You were crying about defense, saying the offense sucked, the defense admittedly by you got a lot better, the offense hasn't changed but is firing on all cylinders.

I know you are waiting for a loss to jump back in, but are seemingly getting impatient, but shit is working right now, Devils are breaking records. Just enjoy it.

We have been good at responding to going down but we are also not going down as much and are getting saves and solid D to keep those deficits within reach.

Assuming the second parts aren’t on response to me because they don’t go against anything I’ve said.

I've definitely seen them still do it here and there.

It’s also their first game on an eastern road trip.

Because they are playing with a lead more often. Easier to keep the play to the outside and wait to deploy your transition when you don't have to press.

You aren't watching the games and it shows. This isn't what the Devils are doing. They are just outworking teams in their D zone and that's how they are playing defense, by forechecking the shit out of them and controlling shifts. I feel very confident that the Devils with a lead so far this year are better than any team in the Corsi era in terms of Corsi and xG.

I really don't understand why Jim refuses to see the forest from the trees here?

The Devils defense and goaltending plays a big factor in their current position right now.

He said it's the offense...well why can't it be both?

I wasn’t going against anything you said. I meant to agree with you completely and should have made that clearer.
