These kinds interventions have been so ineffective for so either (i) the league simply won't learn or is stupid or, (ii) the interventions are cynical - they are some combination of legal risk mitigation/PR management.

I don't know whether the league is stupid or cynical, but any sincere defense of an obviously ineffective approach is as stupid as the approach it defends considered as if it were sincere.
What criteria are you using to determine that the interventions are ineffective?

There were plenty of fights in previous decades. This is silly. You just like it as a hockey fan which is fine but it's super unaware thinking that this is the missing piece.
I don’t have random friends of mine, who aren’t hockey fans texting me in the lead up to this game about the skill that will be on display. I do have them texting me about the fight that’s going to occur/after it happens

He hasn't been thrown out against anyone else.

And that last sentence? That's exactly what I'm saying is weak
Rangers wanted their revenge all season for getting ousted in the playoffs, that’s why guys like Rempe were taking liberties against the devils especially.

It doesn’t really matter how you feel about the devils trying to assert themselves. They did try to win the game, they took a lead after being down 2-0. They’re just not a good team this year and were sellers at the deadline. They’ve lost 3 straight and held a lead in all 3 games. The reality is that they’re a young team that has had a brutal season and teams have taken liberties all year after the devils had a breakout last season. So they need to make some sort of statement to assert themselves because it doesn’t end here, they’ll be seeing the rangers next year too.

We've been through this. Upping the violence is probably good for ratings but it's devastating to the players' well-being so stuff like this can't be happening all the time.

If you elbow a guy in the head that gets you a big suspension and then mock the other team as you’re escorted off the ice, you’re going to need to answer for it. You’ve watched hockey before, you know this.
Stop with this narrative. Should’ve he thrown the linesman down who’s holding him and pulling him away from the other players. That would’ve been ran even longer suspension if he did that. Also he waved at them after macdermid was grabbing his crotch calling rempe a bitch. Rempe was and is more than willing to scrap every game.

You're right, the Rangers did want revenge after last season, but they've gotten the revenge that was available to them by winning on the scoreboard. Admittedly, that's not nearly as good as doing it in the playoffs, but it's all that's been available to them so far. Yes, they've played a physical game with the Devils, but "asserting themselves" meant winning on the scoreboard. Personally, I was hoping the Devils would find a way into the playoffs and we'd see each other again.

I guess I'm saying that the version of asserting themselves we've seen from the Devils is pretty weak, if it even qualifies for that at all.

I didn’t say he should have done anything, just saying he was going to have to answer for it and last night he did.

Well lucky for you you get to hang your hat on the regular season wins this season. Rangers will get another chance next year when the devils are back to the dance.

vesey and the guy he fought getting their gloves off a split second before the other 8 guys resulting in all of them getting game misconducts is a ridiculous rule.

lol right....

next time something like this happens, players are gonna have to have a countdown or cadence like snapping ball in football.

Used to root a bit for the Rangers because of Panarin. Not anymore. What kind of meat-headed idiot would put their health on the line for a douche like Rempe?

its such a bizarre ruling. the rempe macdermid fight was obviously the "original" fight. just because vesey gets his gloves off quicker doesnt make that the primary fight and everyone else secondary. the only secondary fights were the trouba and miller ones cuz they legit were after the forwards started fighting. just a stupid ass rule that lacks common sense.

And I guarantee you that long term they won't be hockey fans because of the fighting. If hockey will make the game so popular why was it always the #4 sport when fighting was a bigger part of the game?

The league will be a much better place when he is ejected from it; I hope for his sake that it is not due to an accumulation of injuries like those that tragically took the lives of so many "heavyweight" enforcers like him in the past. Given all that we know about traumatic brain injuries, his plays, and his kind of player, should not be a part of the NHL any longer.

The entire affair, and the clown-show around Rempe, is an embarrassment to the league.

What criteria are you using to determine that the interventions are ineffective?
When Tom Wilson argues that his suspension for the his windup lacrosse style slap check with a hockey stick was bad because he didn't even injure the target, it's pretty clear that the players believe that the purpose of enforcement is not to limit negligence or malicious intent, but to manage short-term consequences. When the players whom are most dangerous do not take the interventions seriously, that is the problem.

The irony here is almost too much to bear. This is all a consequence of a hit on Siegenthaler that was identical in relevant respect to Cooke on McDonagh. (To be clear, I don't care if a play is negligent or malicious. Doesn't matter to me.)

Then why don't they have line brawls every time they face each other?

This was clearly sparked by Rempe's reckless headhunting. I'm all for sticking up for teammates, but not when those teammates are intentionally trying to end the careers if other players.

i mean the obvious answer is that it's an ice based sport that doesnt appeal to everyone in warmer climates, where you can play baseball/basketball/football year round. Its the same reason that those sports arent as popular the more north you go.

But yea sure it's the lack of fighting that kept it at #4.

Didn't Rangers help knock Devils out of playoff spot and Devils having their coach fired?

But wasn't he punished by the league with a suspension?

i've never seen anything like this. holy shit

You apparently missed hockey at its best haha.

It's happened sparingly over the last few years. Oddly enough, the Rangers are involved in a lot of them.

There was one between the Caps and Rangers during the COVID season. If I recall right there was one between the Flames and Canucks a couple years before COVID. Oddly enough, NJD and NYR had one to start the game about 10 years ago. I remember ESPN throwing a bitch fit about that one and demanding that fighting be taken out of the game.
