It annoys me how no one takes their helmet off anymore
Guys really tear up their hands punching plastic nowadays. It’s a bummer. The book about Boogaard sheds light on how painful and draining (and risky for pain meds addiction) the constant reinjuring of hands is

I know there's that one guy earlier in this thread who can't really see it but man, Rempe got pumped again. I mean, good for him standing in there instead of bailing out and letting it go to the judge's scorecard... but he took a whipping in that one.

those front hand jabs looked like they were at least uncomfortable and one or two of those rights got in there, looked like the one he ate right as he was dropped to one knee kind of sucked.

I don't think I've seen a guy who is this big and wants to fight this often be so bad at using his range before.

McDermit is a pure heavyweight, not even playable except for situations like this and has a lot of fights under his belt. Takes more than being big to be a puglist. Rempe has a good chin, he'll learn from these bouts. He hung in, points go to McDermit though.

Look at all the big heavyweight matches Rempe has had:

Martin 34
Deslauriers 33
Reaves 37
McDermid 30

Olivier the youngerst at 27.

Rempe is 21.

Its all about experience.

I mean, sure. If there's such thing as a holdover from that era he's one of the guys who still fits the bill (at least on the sliding scale, I'm sure he's probably a bit better than some of the early 2000's enforcers at actually playing hockey)

But it's like even when he's losing Rempe is still just focused on trying to get shots in instead of playing any defense. He doesn't move his opponent much, get them off balance... he just takes punches and waits for his chance to swing, over and over and over again. I guess it's kind of worked so far, maybe his size and range saps a little power out of the shots, but he's still getting tagged constantly in a way that I've never seen from a guy his size.

i thought theere was a new (ish) rule that says you cant
This is correct to the best of my knowledge, you do it and you either get a penalty or they stop the fight like immediately but I can't remember what it is, might be both. Either way if you want the fight you can't really do it anymore.

There was that one time where two guys stepped in and took each others' helmets off before they started in order to skirt that rule but I think that pissed the league off too, so no more of that.
Was there bad blood from earlier games or something? This kind of affair doesn't happen that often.
Rempe sat a few games for a pretty bad elbow to Siegenthaler. Also there was some sort of bullshit even before that but the Siegenthaler hit followed by Rempe waving bye-bye to everybody after getting ejected for a chicken wing is probably all they really needed.

Once in a while a little brouhaha like this is good. Rangers could use it too, it’ll give them some extra confidence in each others ability to play physical.

Ridiculous. NHL refs come up with some cowardly rules technicality to endanger the health of the players on the ice before the game even starts.

Devils coach should also get a heavy suspension for instigating this. If players get penalized for starting fights, coaches should be suspended for telling their team to start line brawls.

lol shut up and take a walk. They put Rempe out to start the game, you telling me the Rangers didn't know what was going on?

Stop it.
Because the Devils requested it. They put out their line first. They’ve been building up to fighting this rookie for like two months. Should Rempe have an AHL goon chase him around the ice all game and do nothing? What about the next game? The Devils made it an issue. Unless the Rangers obliged, this would never end.

But that’s completely besides the point. The referees didn’t have to do what they did. Completely cowardly to throw the players out on some dumb technicality.

lmfao again, stop it.

The Rangers put him out there because they knew they had to, because this is still hockey. This wasn't some unfair jumping, this was a mutual understanding. Stop.

Rempe deserved to answer the bell for a f***ing bad hit on Siegenthaler and then waving bye-bye to the rest of the team like getting ejected meant he was above it all. Somebody was going to f*** his day up, they mutually agreed to have it happen early. If you're an NHL fan and you recognize what fights are for you understand this.

you don't get to be the victim for a single second when the goober on your team is the one who caused this all to happen. Stop.

Gary Bettman watching that game like

Bettman doesn't watch hockey.

What was the point of all this??

The Devils aren't making the playoffs, and the Rangers therefore aren't going to face the Devils. There's no "message sending" needed.

So... why?

Brilliant move by the Rangers - if you want your staged fight with the nobody you got for the sole purpose of fighting Rempe, then the rest of you figure skaters are going to pay for it. Somebody get marino a teddy bear so he can sleep at night despite the nightmares of Miller abusing him. Nice little warm up for the Rangers are they get ready for the POs and just another continuing humiliation for the devils.

I am not one of those 80s fans (born in the 90s), but I do miss the chippiness that the NHL has lost over the last decade or two. Before y'all drop down my throat, I am not saying bring back Scott Stevens hits, but I do miss the intense physical battles that we once had. Now it seems each team only has 3-4 "physical guys".

With all the expansions on the horizon (despite failing teams in certain markets), the lack of accountability for the officiating post game, lack of consistency from the DoPS, and excessive gambling ads... it is hard to like how the NHL is trending forward.
