Rumor: Devils looking to move Subban?

He was just citing Jimmy Murphy's article though and let's just say Murphy's track record is a bit spotty / he's not listed as a trusted source on HF. Albeit the notion that the Devils would trade Subban closer to the deadline makes sense if they're not in playoff contention.
Oh, I did not know this. Murphy not trusted or Richardson not trusted?

Subban seems like a guy that needs to step up his offseason training to get into better shape and improve his on ice speed.

I don't see Subban returning more than a 2nd with 50% retention at the deadline. If a 2nd team retains 25% then a 2nd to NJ and a 4th to them seems reasonable but that's probably the best case scenario in terms of a return to NJ.

Murphy tends to be a little out there from what we've seen.

Lyle does the leg work for a lot of us and links daily articles with his own commentary which is usually solid. I do enjoy that he did it seemingly as a hobby in the late 90's and he carved himself a reporting/writing role all these years later.

NJ already paid Subban his $6 million bonus, they owe him $2 million the rest of the way. Now they're going to trade him so ...who exactly?? can play RD on the third pair.

Yeah, makes a lot of sense.
I think hes here until early TDL. But I woudl listen from today forward.

I just have a feeling you’ll see the Yotes make an offer to take contract off the books for a sweetener
But why? He's on his last year of the contract. Devils can just wait it out rather than paying anything to have him be taken. They're not trying to compete right now or looking to add a ton of players to their cap.

I'm sure they'll make an offer. But could you make even the most remotely coherent argument as to why NJ would give up assets to get him off the books?

Why though? No one is going to give up anything good for him. Sure at the TDL if someone wants him as a UFA rental and will pay at least a 2nd go ahead and do that, but trading him when he costs nothing but cap and we have no other options at RD doesn't really make much sense.

Just a few reminders:

-The Devils have a ton of cap space so we don't need to gain more by trading PK.
-The Devils have little in depth on the right side of the D so we actually can use PK.
-The Devils have already paid PK's signing bonus so his salary for the season is much lower than his cap hit, so trading him wouldn't save much money at all.
-PK actually played pretty well, not $9M defenseman well, but well-enough, so he's not waiver fodder.
EDIT: - It's the final season of his contract, so this isn't a long-term issue at all.

In summation, we don't need to trade him, don't want to trade him, and he's actually not bad, so any talk of trading him with a sweetener is very silly.

Thanks.

Last couple seasons have been rough but he'll also be playing on a much improved team this year.

Now if the Devils struggle and decide to sell, they could get a decent return by involving a third team and doing double retention like CBJ did with Savard last season.

Kind of silly, Leafs have no way to add a 9M contract even if Subban was good. They might have interest next year on a super cheap contract, I could see that. Same goes for the Bruins I would think.

Jersey still has tons of cap space anyway, might as well just ride it out.

They could fit him in if there was another team retaining, i.e. NJ retains a chunk and then the other team retains on his now reduced cap hit before sending him to Toronto

Assuming his bonus is already paid, he only has $2m in real money owed this season. I feel like this has Ottawa or Arizona written all over it. But I can't see New Jersey paying anyone to take him due to their own abundance of cap space

only a few teams can take that cap hit

people really can not question certain things--take a look a how many teams paul coffey played for

idk, why do they need space. Are there offer sheets they want to play around with?

Seems more like a July move.

I thought I read that he became a pylon when he bulked up too much. Is that true? If so...shouldn't a change in workout regime with concentration for acceleration and speed make him more mobile again? Sorry, I haven't followed him much after leaving the Habs (and Nashville to a certain extent).

Why would the Devils add any kind of sweetener? He's in the last year of his contract and they could eat part of the deal and actually get something at the deadline. You're suggesting instead of getting something back for him they should trade him away and *add* something?

Why would they even consider that?

He could be pretty dirty at times. And he dove and embellished a lot when he was younger

Meh. That's not very out of the ordinary and he has done neither of those things while with NJ. He's been a bit chatty on social media for a guy on a bad team but from all accounts he's popular in the locker room and hasn't done anything but play hard when on the ice even if he isn't the player he used to be.

The Coyotes want nothing to do with that contract.

Subban risks them going past the Sabres in standings.

I got a feeling Subban could dominate this season in NJ. He had a pretty good bounce back season last year and with the arrival of Hamilton and Severson a pretty good RHD in his own right, Subban could find himself on the bottom pairing and playing sheltered minutes for the first time in his career.

He's too good for that role and he might help NJ control more play if he is matched against opposition bottom 6 forwards.
