In terms of why he got sent down, probably because he was playing his off hand, the team knew he was going to be playing in the AHL once Pesce and Luke returned, and they wanted to reward/get a quick look at what Misyul looks at the NHL level with a 1 game callup.

I never once brought up Casey's PP time, I expected him to have an easier time on the PP. What impressed me was his 5v5 play where he did a good job using his skating, poise and vision to make smart plays both offensively and defensively.

You keep bringing up the "eye test" being ineffective but what other method would you use to judge his play? 8 games and under a 100 minutes of 5v5 analytics? You're not going to get any reliable data from such a short sample size vs actually watching the game and how they play.

Considering Nemec was the one making the more rookie level mistakes on that pair, I don't see how you can contribute Nemec's struggles to Casey. Casey wasn't the one getting caught out of position.

He has to cover for him and had to be the one leading the pair and trying to communicate where he needs to be.

The idea Nemec was handed an incredibly hard assignment to start this year is hogwash

Then why is the one "covering" for him the one that's more often out of position? If what you said was true then Nemec should have been more defensively aware and taken less risks but the opposite occurred.

No, you are spewing bullshit.

“As much as the goals and everything are great, if his game defensively is a mess and it's a fire drill when he's on the ice, he's not going to be able to stay here. But his defensive game, he plays with great intelligence."

"He doesn't complicate things for himself or his teammates," he added. "I've seen a lot of undersized defensemen try to make their way in the NHL, and not many of them have the intelligence and awareness to not complicate the game. ... It's been fun to watch that, it's been very impressive for a young guy." - Sheldon Keefe

He played well in a very difficult situation.
"A very difficult situation"

He was used almost exclusively in offensive situations against the other teams scrubs.

Actions speak louder than words. 10 minutes a night EV, in the easiest minutes possible, and the first one sent down.

Yeah, and then he was sent down a week later because his defensive game was a mess

Yeah, a very very difficult situation. Righty-righty parings almost never work with minimal exceptions. He was sent down because he was always getting sent down and anyone with a clue could see the righty-righty pairing wasn’t working.

Sheldon is with me on this one. He played quite well and showed a ton.

Sheldon played him as little as possible against as bad of competition as possible in as much offensive zone usage as possible.

Damn that’s nuts, it’s almost as if he was dealing with a righty-righty pairing with two guys that can’t even legally drink.

Playing your first ever NHL games with a guy that is playing like garbage is a very difficult situation. Don’t much care what more you have to say on the matter. I thought he played well. Coach, very clearly, thought he played well.

If coach thought he played so well why did he virtually never choose to send him onto the ice?

Pretending that casey getting heavily offensively skewed usage against scrubs doesn't matter is wild.

Just curious, Casey gets an excuse for playing with Nemec but no excuse for Nemec having to play with Casey?

They both played like shit.

Nemec however has 1200 minutes of excellent work in the NHL when not with Casey

You can keep repeating that but no, he didn’t.

He objectively played 10 minutes a night EV.

He objectively had heavily skewed deployment towards offensive situations.

He objectively played against piss poor competition.

And he was objectively sent to the minors BEFORE luke and pesce were healthy to be replaced by Danill Misyul.

You can look at words said by the coach, or you can look at his actions.

And those aren't the actions of a coach who trusts Seamus Casey to play defense at the NHL level

Yeah, good. He played well. Sheldon agrees. I’ll say no more.

Sheldon doesn't agree.

“Perhaps our whole group shows up, but for a young guy like Seamus, it’s been kind of piling on,” Keefe explained after the 6-5 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals.

Casey skated in just 7:35 of ice time as he struggled to defend the veteran Capitals team fluently.

“And that’s what happens when a coach loses his confidence in you, it’s hard to kind of get going,” Keefe explained.

He was then sent down for Misyul

It is intentional ignorance to pretend keefe trusted casey and to pretend he played well.

I think the only reason Casey was sent down for Misyul was because they would rather have Misyul as the extra body up here and Casey getting into games in the AHL. Not to mention that Casey was only here because of two major injuries on D. Casey still wouldn’t have made his NHL debut if just one of Luke or Pesce were here to start the season.

How long was Misyul up for? I think it was a week or two, but he only got into one game, where he only played 12 and a bit minutes in what is still probably our worst game this season.

Not saying Misyul had anything significant to do with it being our worst game, just the circumstance

Misyul was reassigned to Utica on the 25th of October after being called up on the 21st. 4 days.

Nemec wasn't good enough to outplay Kovacevic and that's really all it comes down to. It was his spot to lose and he lost it. Casey thus far appears to be the smarter player - at every level he's outshined peers from the first prospect camp on - but I don't think they ever seriously considered burning year one of pro hockey. This is the same front office that watched Will Butcher and Ty Smith peter out fast (Casey is way better, yes...), but there was never a reason to have either guy up with the team once Kovacevic did his thing.

This is Fitz's ideal scenario. Spread out the cap hits during the window, lean on experience and size for depth, then eventually let a more polished kid step in smoothly and/or challenge your veterans, incoming and outgoing. No more playtime. It's hard to do in a cap world where agents get pissed publicly, but when you have the leverage and the depth on your roster, you use it.

Nemec still hasn't really shaken the lack of urgency in the d-zone, which is a very Euro prospect type of flaw. The AHL is the perfect place to work on that since it's north-south, very dumb hockey. He can't figure that out, he's probably a disappointment. I'm not super worried that he's a slow burn prospect - anyone we took in that draft's top 5-10 would've been that way. There's not a single name in the top 15 of that draft that's as precocious or as capable as the guys taken in 2021 or 2020. The scouts and press nailed it as not being very good. Given what we've seen, I'm expecting a Lindell or Severson level player - flawed mid pairing guy who's still quite good. That would be an outcome that is only mildly disappointing if you're realistic about that draft. Frankly, I think a lot of his flaws are similar to Larsson. People overestimated the IQ and ability 'against men' when there was a lot more learning to do.

With both the D and the bottom six, I wouldn't expect to see a kid there for a while. Until they have a Zetterlund kind of profile - physically ready and in an obvious statistical up-trend - it's going to be vet trades and signings all the way.

I'm glad the free website statisticians and myself agree that Giroux is the best fit from that list

I wonder if Ottawa would consider a Batherson/Mercer deal straight up? Ottawa needs a shakeup and Dawson needs a wake up.
When I watch Mercer, I can’t help but feel like he leaves me wanting more. He doesn’t trust his shot (and it’s actually a pretty good one), defers way too much with a low percentage pass instead of shooting and isn’t taking the puck to the net the way he did in his sophomore season. I really thought the kid would be a 30 goal scorer and top six player but he’s settling in as a third line player. There’s nothing wrong with that but it’s frustrating when the player has some skills that he simply isn’t using.

Keefe made a comment in his last post game presser. “I don’t know if it was so much as moving LaBarge up as it was moving other guys down.” I believe it was Nichols who questioned him again about Mercer and Keefe was rather defensive. I’m sure he sees the same thing we do.

Development isn’t linear and if Mercer progressed from his second season, I think a lot of the talk about needing to add a top 6 player would not be happening.

As for Nemec, I really hope he was number two on the Devils’ board (I think he was but may be mistaken). Organizational strengths and weaknesses can always change and here we are now needing a forward piece; preferably a player who can play wing but also move to center. I would certainly be open to or entertain the idea of a Nemec trade. It never hurts to listen. With that said, I strongly suspect the options would be limited. Even with the Cap going up, we are somewhat hamstrung by our cap situation and Luke needs to be paid this offseason. I think a trade for a young, comparable forward prospect is much harder to swing than a deal for a player slightly older who does not have the same level of cost control.

I think dgibb is generally right here about Casey - Casey was obviously excellent on the puck but really struggled with defending down low and on the boards. Obviously being the left side on an R-R pairing did not help, but he was still too often put on the wrong side of the puck just by being too small/not anticipating.

And also the same exact shit is happening with Nemec right now in Utica that was happening up here. Nemec struggles were because of Nemec.

Sorry if it’s been talked about a lot already. Would something like Nemec and Gritsyuk plus ? be enough for Tkuchuk ? If it was enough , would we even be able to keep him cap wise ? Or would someone like Mercer have to go in the deal or a separate deal ?
We literally cannot afford to trade one of the what, two? three?, forward prospects that we have with a legitimate NHL shot. NONE of our forward prospects are 1st line calibur.

Nemec, if not enough as a potential 2D, we could throw in another D, one of the depth goalies, whatever. A pick or two. But not a forward. We're way too thin, hence the need for depth forwards as well as interest in a Brady Tkachuk.

Regarding the twitter list of players can someone please post the list ? We all are talking about it here and there but I don't login to twitter anymore and have no desire to

we don't need 1st line forward prospects. We have plenty of 1st line forwards.

we absolutely can afford to trade one of our forward prospects. This is what winning teams do. Take a shot to try and improve at the deadline if possible.

My point is that we don't have ANYONE coming that's guaranteed to play in the NHL. They don't have to be top line forwards, they need to be able to play in the top 9. NONE of our prospects are guaranteed that. And we don't even have many prospects at forward that are in the discussion. You trade one to get Brady - wonderful - now what happens with an injury? You play? Me?

so just to be clear, you're saying you wouldn't trade someone like Gritsyuk in a deal for Brady Tkachuk because we don't have a ton of forward prospects.......?

Nemec had 42 points in 78 games his first two years in Utica. This season he has 3 points in 11 games. Something is clearly up with him this season, not sure if it's a legitimate regression or if he's still feeling the effects of that nasty hit in the offseason.

I would hate to pull the plug on him this early for a couple of reasons.

1.) He's 21.
2.) The embarrassment of riches on the backend will not last forever - the future of Hamilton and Kovacevic with this team is very much in doubt.
3.) The Jiricek deal - selling low on a high pick defenseman this early, especially one that lost his job in camp and isn't NHL-established, is not going to return the value you probably think it will.

I don't think he's untouchable and there's no harm in listening, but you better be damn sure that you're getting a major roster upgrade back that is both high-quality and long-term.
