Unless he has his eyes set on somewhere else, there's little reason for Gritsyuk to not want to be here. Playing with Jack, Nico, Bratt, etc has to be pretty attractive to players coming into the league.

I'll be curious if the devils let him burn his only elc year next season

I doubt he does, I don’t know how many times that’s happened outside of Gusev and Sorokin.

There’s performance bonuses on ELCs that can get him more money and he would play for his next deal.

Except is there room for him to play with Jack, Nico, Bratt, ect?

We just watched Mercer get pushed out of playing with Jack, Nico, Bratt, ect...

Most if not all of the video I've seen of Gritsyuk he's been on the right side...so he would be competing with Bratt, Meier, Mercer and Holtz for a RW spot....unless of course he can play on the left ...

But that might be a reason to not want to come here? Or make it less attractive...I don't know?

Part of this is timing, though - Gritsyuk will be '24' if he signed after next season in the KHL, so he'd only play out his ELC over that year. He can get a $90k signing bonus plus whatever he gets for being on a roster, and then have a second contract immediately. I don't think performance bonuses are likely to beat that, most of them are just not likely to be achievable.

I was going to say Nikolai Kovalenko did this, but he signed an ELC and played on it in Russia this year and then came over when the KHL season ended. I do think Minnesota would've done this for Kaprizov but COVID happened.

Kaprizov’s deal burned the first year of two year deal but that still gave them a year to work with.

Shesterkin didn’t even burn a year of his 2 year ELC.

Gritsyuk’s worth is pretty nebulous, both sides are probably off with a year of him playing for a deal.

He can make up to an extra 1m off of level A bonuses (link), I don’t see how he’s getting more on a 1 year standard deal and I don’t see him getting term before arriving in NA.

If he isn’t good enough to hit any of those bonuses than he isn’t enough of a talent to discuss burning his ELC and going straight to a standard deal anyway. It’s not a good argument for not having him on an ELC.

If he has an amazing superstar season in the KHL, maybe that changes, but I wager he ends up on an ELC.

It seems like the PP could be where he provides a lot of value.

I've seen Gritsyuk play both wings. He's also a versatile, speedy and high compete player who is not simply defined as a scorer. I think there would be an adjustment period, but he's nearly ready to make an impact as a top 6 forward in the NHL, if he so chooses.

If a player has that kind of outlook I don't know if I'd want him anyway... competition makes greatness... guys that look at who's ahead of them and think there's no place for them tend to be losers...

Let's hope Grits plans on coming and taking a spot....

Interesting grit option. I wouldn’t mind paying a bit of a premium for a guy that should be just a 4th liner considering he’s a fantastic penalty killer. But I wouldn’t go crazy with the contract.

Turns 28 in January of next year so a reasonable bet to be productive for the term as well - still a little concerned about what he will likely get since since it was rumored that he and Nash weren't close in contract talks, but if it isn't a crazy overpay he would be a good add.

There's a very chaotic option for fixing the PK, if NYR buys out Trouba, do we do it.....?:laugh:

Trenin is one of the players that could be signed and make the offseason a win regardless of other moves. I know some will bristle just because he's a player that stats crew likes, but he would go a very long way toward fixing several issues from last season. He can play physical, PK, and he genuinely contributes to progressing the game rather than just avoiding getting caved in as a 4th liner.

Me suggesting Trouba because of his penalty kill numbers and getting ratio'd to hell within 15 mins.

Fair enough guys, it was just a suggestion :laugh::laugh:

If Trouba wasn't dogwater and complete ass I'd be more open. But we have a McDermid. We don't need a Trouba. Besides, Trouba is a one trick pony

ALTHOUGH seeing Trouba on the team and fighting Rempe would collectively break the boards here and I would greatly enjoy that.

Yeah, I'd be more pissed if he was a regular but I'm imagining him more as a 7D Brendan Smith in 22-23.

I mean if you had that mentality in the first place you'd go to the AHL 3 years ago and win yourself a spot....

Not if you don't feel prepared at the time.. after 3 years developing your game you may be more confident

Step 1: Sign Trouba for cheap
Step 2: hire 5 psychologists to persuade him that he is not a big hitting enforcer, but rather do whatever he was trying to do prior to that
Step 3: Trade for profit?

The team is already full at RD, He doesn't fit on the team.

Not asking him to be a regular. If he's bought out, he's not signing elsewhere for money to begin with. He'd be the 22-23 version of Brendan Smith and as bad as Trouba stinks in general, his PK impacts are very good
