I don't think we can say this definitively. Mercer just turned 21. I don't think that means he's a lock to grow astronomically as maybe he matured his game earlier than most but it really can't be totally out of the question as a possible outcome.
I agree we don’t know, but Mercer does play a game which suggests he will improve as he gets his man strength.

And he does strike me as a guy who has room to get stronger. Still seems kid like.

I mean this is true, we never know anything for a fact, but the odds are very low that Mercer will be as good as Meier is now.
He's so young he's harder to project and I don't know if I can even say that. I know the advanced stats or whatever don't look incredible but here's nhl counting stats and you can sort by age for just a 10000 foot view of where he is compared to his peers in the NHL:

Given his versatility too I just can't fathom trading him at all. Maybe he tops out as a Sharangovich type depth winger but you have to see his career through before moving him.

This is and isn't a deadline deal. Meier is an RFA and the Devils are confident they have a good chance to sign him, so it's not the same as trading for a slightly older pending UFA with no extension.
Ok, you still don’t trade a player like Mercer on an ELC for Meier with another year of team control.

Meier is a power forward who drives play but he isn’t Tkachuk, who was the only player in a similar situation where he might have been even discussed.

Tkachuk is a year younger, his 8 year contract started this season and he’s a better/ more productive player. It was insane that he hit the market at all, much less at 24 years old.

Tkachuk is such a unicorn that they made him a sign and trade so they could lock him down for 8 years.

We’re going to offer Meier 8 years because that’s what it takes, not because we want him locked up until he’s 34.

This is such a weird hill to die on post trade. You won’t find a single report of us offering Mercer.

There are players that analytical models don't capture well and Mercer is one of those for me. I don't think he's nearly as good as he's looked the last 6 games, but I see him having a lot of value over the course of his career.

That said, he has looked best in his career when he has been the 3rd best forward on his line playing higher up the lineup than when he has been asked to carry the 3rd line. I think Tatar and Hischier are the perfect players for him to work with.

Is Timo likely going to play Wednesday or is he really injured? I thought his "injury" was to keep him out of the lineup not to ruin his trade value.

We don't know yet. They said he skated yesterday morning and felt good, and he is joining the team in Colorado on Tuesday, but no indication yet whether he is playing.

Ya and conversely while Tatar is an analytical darling he’s not much of a goal scorer these days. He benefits from playing with guys who can bury chances just as they benefit from him.

“Yeah,” Bratt said, when asked if the Meier trade motivates him to sign a long-term deal. “Getting a player like this makes a huge difference for us. Hopefully, even for him, a deal gets done and all of that stuff.

“Right now, I’m just focused on winning games and playing my best hockey and making a push right now. All the other things will get figured out somehow.”

Can't read the full article but aww cute how Sevo and Bratt were on a double date lol

It cuts off at the best part though, what was the joke Sevo told!?
I think it was something about a "hole" from Fabian Zetterlund.

Fitz has no real excuses this year with Bratt. He'll probably have to cave to Bratt's agent with this Timo move and Bratt shoving it back in his face for the second consecutive year at PPG

BTW, in all seriousness, the Joke was this (by Sevs) :

“We were sitting at dinner and I go, ‘hey, maybe this is our last dinner together,’” Severson told NJ Advance Media.

This was before they found out who was going to San Jose for Timo.

One of them should've picked up their phones to scare the other one. Probably would've scared their GF's/wives though which would've been a bad idea.

SJ played on Sat, next game is tomorrow on Tues.

NJ played on Sat, next game is on Wednesday.

Seems like a clear, pre-defined window for making the trade and allowing a couple of days for Timo to get his life and shit organized. I do not envy him in that regard...

If you take away the fact that he’s 21, already has ~150 nhl games as a top 9 forward under his belt, has scored at .5 ppg clip from day one, and is under contract for several more years…yeah Mercer has as much value as the 19th rated prospect.

Lol
