Obviously Nicholls is discussing a long term deal. He knows Meier is an RFA.

BTW, he is an RFA with a $10 million qualifying offer, so arbitration and offer sheets are really off the board. It is like the Tkachuk situation from last year, he can sign the qualifying offer for $10 million and walk himself to free agency. Given that price tag and what it could die to the Devils cap without the long term security, they would have to turn around and trade him. So he does have leverage, and why discussions about needing to sign him long term.

The offer is limited to one year so that's a red herring in my view. Meier is not going to sign a $10m total contract therefore give up one that will be north of $50m, more like $70+ million, imo.

He's a very good player and the NJDs made out in this trade.

Yes, Doug Wilson went off the deep end a handful of years before leaving the Sharks, but still Timo's employer controls his future. The question is does the NJDs want to past this year.

Hertl is actually the net front guy in these, so I wonder how will set ours up.

While I dig the positive reviews for the Devils, some of what the people criticizing the Sharks' return are doing is a common trope in sports: "You should've gotten at least one of that team's top 3 prospects!" or whatever, utterly stripping away any context of how one team's farm system matches up with others.

Like, I get it if Sharks fans are upset that Nemec/Hughes/Mercer/whomever wasn't part of the deal, and I'm sure Grier asked about their availability. But, for one, it's not like there was a ton of suitors out there for Timo given a lot of contenders' cap situations, so getting the perfect deal probably wasn't in the cards simply due to the market for Timo's services.

Yeah, I was going to comment on this as well - I read through those trade reviews and the ones slagging Grier for not getting a Hughes, Nemec or Mercer back in the deal seemingly don't understand that Fitz wasn't going to include them no matter what angle Grier took. They were all rightfully deal breakers.

I also noticed a couple writers put Holtz in that group - not on the same level per say, but along the lines of "why couldn't the Sharks get a top prospect like these 4 guys." That was interesting to see and probably just more of a reflection of people that don't follow this team closely not really knowing how prospects currently stack up and thinking a former 7th overall pick in Holtz must have much more value than a 20th pick that year that was seen as a bit of a stretch at the time.

I'm sure Holtz was available, but that Grier just preferred Muk. While most Sharks fans have been reasonably fair throughout this process, a few of them were really ripping into Holtz - damn that would be sweet if he can get back on track and be a 30 goal scorer. Honestly, between Holtz and Muk, I'm not sure who I would have preferred to give up - Holtz still has that high end upside. Just glad it wasn't both as some were suggesting.
