9 digit offer as in 100 million+ not 9 million a year.
Lol... what are you talking about they are offering minimum $12.5m per year and over $100mil total. Rantanen already makes $9.25AAV, they aren't offering him $9m per year.
Yeah, I misread that after I saw the previous post above saying we could have Rantanen at 9. That's on me.

Agreed. I don’t think this is about the money anymore.

I’m expecting him to get less if he goes to free agency.

If he gets traded again - I do imagine it may be with a team or location he wants to commit to.

I feel bad for Carolina right now. Hopefully they get a good return.
There's nothing tangible to suggest that it was about money and now no longer is about money. We truly have no idea. People here are assuming that because he's not signed yet that means that something has gone awry with the negotiations. The reality is most likely that negotiations have barely even begun, with both sides being fine with that. Tulsky flat out said they'd give Mikko time to settle in with the team and learn about them to decide on his long term future. And Mikko has flat out said that he hasn't even had time to think about it with the whirlwind of the trade and move and with the 4 nations interruption too. Sure, the team and agent have probably thrown preliminary numbers out there but I doubt it's gone any further than that yet.

Other than Carolina, who would be the competitive teams that are in a position to offer Rantanen $13m + in the offseason?

I'm seeing Winnipeg and Dallas as having enough space to be in on it without completing crippling their team structure. And as much as I would love to have Rants on the Canes long term, him going to either of the Jets or Stars in the off-season would be incredibly juicy based on both being big rivals of Colorado.

Other than that any contender type team would have to make some big big moves to clear cap to fit in a $13m + salary or a bottom half type team would have to go very over the top money wise to gain an advantage.

This stupid trade f***ed up the Canucks sending Pettersson to Carolina, so I'm glad they will now have to deal with the headache of moving him again.

The Lightning have the cap and a need for a top winger. Just a matter of if they want to blow most of it on one player.

Colorado didn't want anyone talking to Rantanen at all for whatever reason. Carolina was the only one willing to give up a package of that quality without an extension. I bet there would've been a bidding war for an extended Rantanen.

Or Colorado knew how crazy Rantanen's demands were and didn't want to scare teams away.
Theres also a chance Rantanen has one specific destination in mind and is gonna sign there no matter what assuming every single team will offer him a blank cheque. I just can't bring myself to galaxy brain some other bogus reason for why Colorado traded him especially with knowing how high the cap is about to go.

I would not want to be Carolina right now. Could you win a Cup this year with Rantanen? Yeah you could...But you've been pretty mediocre since you acquired him.

If you won't a Cup and he walked it would be worth it, but Cup chances don't look super strong right now.
So for me if Rantanen doesn't resign in the next few days then you have to put him on the market. Elite/all-star players simply cannot walk out your door for nothing - Especially when you gave up good assets to get them.
