Wasn’t Marino the one who coughed
Up the puck against the rags in game 7 before Zib tied it?

Signing 28 year old Severson to big money when we already have Hamilton is bad asset management. Nemec has 7+ years of cost control ahead of him and fits the timeline for the roster better.
For a team like us who hasn't had a good defense in forever, how is it bad asset management to sign a top defender longterm? Severson is one of the best 2nd pairing RHD in the league.

The Severson situation is a curious one. I think there’s a good chance he’s on the roster when the season starts. But his value is gonna skyrocket if he’s part of the Devils’ return to competitiveness this season, and there’s no way the Devils are gonna be paying him what he’ll get in UFA next year. But can you really dump a top-pairing defenseman if you’re looking at your potential second playoff berth since 2012?

I love the Marino addition but it’s gonna be bittersweet if the Devils finally have some success and Severson isn’t here for it. He’s been a trooper for a long time.
I’d imagine it’s all gonna depend on how the season goes. He’s gonna start the season with the devils. If Nemec does really well and/or we’re a bit outside of the playoff picture I think he’s more likely to be traded.

If we’re doing really well, in a playoff spot and they want to keep Nemec in the AHL Severson likely stays all season and leaves in UFA which is a big loss but isn’t the end of the world coming off of a competitive season with Nemec and Hughes coming in and Dougie and Marino still there at RD.

If we were to trade Severson at the deadline 50% retained we could get some serious value.

Lol what? Marino makes a little more than Erik Gudbranson currently makes for some perspective. He isn’t some massive long term commitment.
I'm okay with the trade. Personally I would have rather gave Ty one more chance, but not complaining about the move. Just wish we did something better with 2OA opposed to drafting Nemec

I like the trade but really wonder what Fitzgerald’s plan is.

Severson - Hamilton - Marino locked into next year leaves no room for Nemec. Also seems like the Devils are planning on moving on from Severson with this trade.

Really seems like Fitzgerald is trying to bolster the roster as much as possible so there is zero excuse for the team to miss the playoffs. Can’t blame kids not being ready anymore because the only spots they have on this team is if they push out a veteran.

He's going to get at least $7-8M on the open market based on what others are getting. We'd hamstring our team signing him to that.

Yeah in an ideal world Nemec is pushing Severson to the 3rd pair sooner then later and that would just be way too much money for a 3rd pair guy, even if he is still really good.

Marino will fit that roll better.

I love Sevo, I don't want him gone, but we are also trying to build a long term contender here and that means some guys won't fit.

Can't see him getting anywhere close to 8M. I think if we signed him longterm we'd get under 7 term

And Marino’s younger. And he’ll be a better fit in a couple years because he’s a defensive guy and Hughes, Nemec and Dougie will all be powerplay guys.

This move makes so much sense in so many ways.

Nice suprised by fitz

If he wasn't going to resign then you deal him in 2023 for a big return.
So we take a#2 overall pick and turn into a late first two years later and maybe a decent prospect for a year of debrincat? He got a first, second and third with more team control, do you think his value goes up?

That seems like some shit asset management.

Too much risk on a 2nd overall.

I was very much in favor of moving 2 for Debrincat until I found they they weren't talking extension. That's a breaking point for me.

Here's the current list of defensemen who signed a $6M+ contract at UFA status in the league. Severson is better than many of these players.

Fantastic trade from Fitz. They've got another desperately needed defensive defenseman. His microstat profile also shows his strengths are exactly what the Devils need: Rush defense, retrievals, and zone exits.

He'll be a perfect complement to Luke in the future. Fitz has got his Severson replacement, who happens to be younger and cheaper.

I love how everyone is terrified that Cat would walk after 2 years but everyone is so certain Nemec is going to be a star. He wasn't even projected as a top 3 pick...

Players take home-town discounts all the time. Severson always seemed the type to want to be a Devil forever

Nemec doesn't have to be on the team this year. Roll with the three you listed and move Severson at the deadline and call up Nemec. There's no reason to rush Nemec.

Smart, forward thinking trade to solve RD for the foreseeable future. They now have leverage if they'd rather just keep Severson and go into the season with great RD depth or trade him and improve the forward group. Everyone's bringing up Miller but if we're trading with Vancouver I could see Garland making a ton of sense considering his contract and age.

That's fine with me. That's a rock solid defense. Let Nemec learn in the AHL and if he looks NHL-ready, then you could consider moving Severson.

They need to make the playoffs this season.

I’m not certain he will be a star. But he was probably one of the safest picks in the whole draft to be a good player.
