I'll admit, I really didn't think Smith had this much value. Or I guess the pens are really tight on cap space and willing gamble a bounceback for Smith. I was willing too, but I do this trade every time. Man it's gonna be great to have defencemen who can actually defend for once.

I love the trade , as close to perfect as we can get . Smith for a defensively sound , good puck moving RHD that has 5 years left at 4.4 !?
I dont think I could have hand picked a better trade for Smith (realistic one… I’m sure Makar was not offered in trade ).

The thing is Ty has been considered a big time prospect for a while, had a really productive rookie season and has some nice skill. He wasn’t a fit here and it was good on Fitz to trade him before his value dropped.

This also clears up some cap space for Pittsburg

Our needs and long-term outlook have changed drastically on D. When we drafted him we didn’t have Dougie Hamilton, and we didn’t have L.Hughes or Nemec coming soon.

In all seriousness, I hope the Fitz detractors pipe down for a bit now. He has done a massive overhaul on the defensive side, has made moves to attempt to benefit the goaltending every season and added veteran support for the young forwards.

I think he's done a much better job at managing this team's assets than many give him credit for. Now it's up to the staff and the players to put it together.

If this begins to spell the end for Severson, I'll be sad to see him go. He's an extremely underappreciated player by this fanbase by and large.

As for Ty, we all kind of saw the writing on the wall with Fitz's presser about what he wanted out of his defense. I hope he turns into a good player, pulling for him.

I will also say that since Fitz has been GM in 2020, there has been a heavy focus on acquiring great skaters. Ty Smith just wasn't that.

I think this is a really good trade in a vacuum. And I think it’s even better because we fleeced a division rival.

And if Smith gets good it’s like Zacha again, simply was never gonna happen here so how can you be mad?
