letting him walk for free would be a mistake.

You have two other RHDs signed longterm and you just picked one 2nd overall who might make the team. He should be moved IMO.

5 more years at $4.4
I love Severson as a player and think he is greatly underrated but given he will be 29 at the start of his next contract and who we have, I have to agree with you.

I think we likely keep him because I think this is an important year for Fitz and making progress as a team, but the right decision is likely trading him.

I’m a little surprised to see Mariano’s so good defensively. I always noticed his skating and his puck moving when i watched Pittsburgh. Bodes well for his future, really like this move.

Who’s gonna be the Devil who turnstiles Smith in the first Devils/Pens game this season? I’m going with Mercer.
He is an excellent transition player, which will be a huge boost to our north-south style. I don't think he's very good in the offensive zone. Kind of like a right-handed Siegenthaler.

Love this trade.

Severson is getting traded for a forward. As long as that forward is Mason Geerstsen's twin brother I'm going to love that deal too.

EDIT I meant isn't his twin brother, but it's funnier if I don't change it. so whatever. haha

As far as trades go, this has to be up there with the Siegs acquisition, if not better.

This also shows that Fitz is definitely not done with Free Agency.

Love the acquisition of Marino as I have heard nothing but GOOD things about him and his play.

And to get him at such a reasonable deal already in place?

Fitz may have robbed the Pens blind here.

So....what's next? (hopefully a Bratt Re-signing)

why is pitt looking to make this move smith clearly looks on paper a downgrade and a 3rd doesn't really move the needle. cap space? the guy is only making 4.4 that isn't much

Would it be better to trade Severson or Marino ? Canucks really like Marino , maybe we flip him plus ? for Miller ?
I can see it as a possibility

I honestly would have assumed Marino would be worth more as a young cost controlled top 4 defenseman.

They must actually like Ty
The thing is Ty has been considered a big time prospect for a while, had a really productive rookie season and has some nice skill. He wasn’t a fit here and it was good on Fitz to trade him before his value dropped.

This also clears up some cap space for Pittsburg

Smith still has big upside as an offensive defenseman and he was a top prospect less than a calendar year ago. We were sick of his play last year, but there are a lot of teams that would find a ton of value in buying low on him.

Plus cap space.

Ummm wouldn’t make sense. Severson is older and gonna be more expensive if we resign him. Marino is on a nice contract from ages 25-29. Would make no sense to trade him over Severson who is older and in line for a big expensive extension.

I doubt they trade Severson either at least until the deadline. Severson also isn’t as good of a fit long-term with Dougie, Luke and Nemec all being offensive powerplay guys.

This trade makes so much sense in so many ways both now and long-term.

Pittsburgh was over the cap and still doesn't have a full roster signed.

This is unreal. Should we still fire Fitz?

As for Severson, hang onto him, unless someone wants to pay through the nose this summer. The injury insurance can never hurt, and we could make a killing at the deadline. Very good chance Severson is the prize of all available defenseman.
