So with alm of our cap are going to take on another bad contract to get draft picks this summer? It would be nice to get another 1st somehow.

Do it Fitz. 5 years 10.5mm AAV

compensation is 2 firsts, 2nd, 3rd.

I’d do it . After this draft where we hopefully snag a future top pairing D , we have to start moving forward and progressing at some point . We have the core and what appears to be surrounding cast . Next year or year after is when we should acquire help to go with the core . I’m not sure what the answer is but would be ideal to try to use picks and prospects along with the cap room to try to grab a Pettersson or Barkov Forsberg or ?? Something along those lines . Try to poach a true elite player by offer sheet or tagging with a team that’s screwed with cap issues

We’re going to get a good pick even in the worst case scenario. And we still might pass some teams if this thing really goes off the rails.
Rags will get 1OA if they don't make playoffs.

The "culture" debate is a hard one because it's almost impossible to quantify. I think generally "losing culture" is usually just a sign of bad management. Having a "winning culture" can only get you so far if you draft like shit and make bad trades/signings. I think you build a "winning culture" by building a team with talent and depth.

The Sharks were long praised for their culture. They are currently a disaster cause they have a bad team with awful contracts. I'd rather be NJ right now than SJ.

I think it's more about the mentality.

I've read an article about Edmonton, it included interview with Adam Ference who complained that EDM culture was dominated by young stars (Eberle and Hall) who were the most skilled but also had an awful mentality (they didn't mind losing, didn't practice hard and were all about flashy moves). So it's affected by personnel, partially depends on who do you draft but also includes veterans, coaches, management etc.

EDIT: But of course agree that it's hard to quantify since there's no stat to measure that. It's also hard for us, casual fans, to notice because the culture happens behind a locked door.

Of course right now, but that's what 20 years of only missing the playoffs twice will do. Yeah they never won the cup, but they were in the talks for basically two decades. All things come to an end, including teams who won multiple cups over the course of a few years.

Putting side by side LA kings and San Jose's playoff history over the last 20 years tells two completely different stories. One really good for a couple decades and one really bad, but spiked up and down real quick over a couple years.

Again, there is no 100% right or 100% wrong way to do any of it, it takes too much into account that is out of anyone's control. But using San Jose as an example to put down "winning culture," is something I completely disagree with.

Also regarding the San Jose culture, please don't forget that they shuffled captaincy a lot. They were always a good regular season team that has fallen apart in playoffs but to be fair, their conference was virtually never easy.

Of note Nolan Foote is not in the lineup. So either he’s injured or perhaps there is a call-up coming. Also don’t know what’s going on with Okhotiuk, Hasn’t played in a while and according to EP he’s been on our taxi-squad since April 1st. That would suggest he hasn’t been injured but just been sitting on the taxi-squad. Also looks like Jacob’s has been sitting on the taxi-squad since April 2nd

Even thigh it is very hard when the team is not winning , I would still rather be in our position than a team like Calgary / Preds / Stars etc . They are middling teams with no where deep as prospects assets and cap room . We may suck right now but we are on the ruse instead of being stuck in limbo for the next few years

Tennyson is today's taxi squad call up.

Players not having an issue with losing and not taking practice serious is a player issue imo.
