Post-Game Talk: Devil VI

When we first traded for Tank, I loved how that line had some 5 on 5 play. But it seemed we had to find a way to include Panarin, and then when Kane came it felt more of the same. How do we get Panarin with one of them and make it work.

Part of Panarin's problem is that he thinks he has to make a pass play every time the puck is on his stick. When he gets pressured you can always count on him either trying to stick handle his way our or (an east-west, drop pass play). I never pegged him as someone who is the highest paid player and needs to put up x number of goals to be considered a success. His playmaking ability is something this team needed for a long time, but he gets flustered easily when he's leaned on to produce. He just needs to keep it simple. If there's nothing there, put it deep and make the opposite team chase or put it on net low for a high percentage rebound chance.

Panarin has always been a pass first, shoot second guy. That said, he’s still too good of a shooter to put up zero goals in a series. He’s forcing passes even when the Devils give him the shooting lane. Not good.

Honestly don't know how or why this team has developed this passing mentality to find the most perfect shots. Even when we're down and struggling to put pucks on the net, if we're in the slot we defer for a pass. I wonder if GG ever says anything to the team about overpassing, because fans, analysis, and my dead ranger fan grandparents continue to scream for this team to put pucks on the net and create some, any type of chaos.

They are not always confident shooters. They're trying to create tap-in situations.

HYPOTHETICAL: NYR can sign/extend him, get him surgery and LTIR him well into 2024.
I think it may be worth the risk depending on what he’d sign for.

I’d be shocked if he came here without this exact plan already in place frankly

Imagine last year benching shesterkin for that penguins game 7. That’s what the bruins are essentially going to do tonight. Crazy

Yeah, it’s insane that it looks like that’s what Boston is doing. I know Ullmark had a rough game 6 but man, Swayman hasn’t played in a game in weeks and now you’re gonna drop him into game 7? This is why goalie rotations don’t work in the playoffs. Fine in the regular season but you really need a guy in the playoffs, at least to me. It may work for Boston but I’m not a fan of it at all.

Where did you see that Boston named a starter for tonight?

Nothing officially named as far as I can tell, but Ullmark was last off the ice for the AM skate.

I don’t even think they really work in the regular season either. Top guys need to be in a rhythm and disrupting it so much messes with that. I’m not surprised Igor got going when gallant gave him a run of straight games. Think 5 straight. I think it should be 60-65 games for a number 1. Because when u get to the playoffs you need to be ready to handle the work load. Ullmark doesn’t look ready to do so right now

First time this season the Rangers played with their backs to the wall...and they responded.

They need to do the same Monday...

Man, I’m already nervous for tomorrow. The Rangers really just need to come out with that same effort as we had once they got rolling in the second. Consistently getting to the front of their net, actually shooting the puck, keeping tight gaps in the NZ and not just letting the Devils get uncontested zone entires every time. There’s a lot to replicate there that they did last night (in games 1 and especially 2 as well) so hopefully they’re able to find that level.

Remember the Devils are in this position for the first time as a team. Home ice game 7, they’re going to be nervous and also they’re going to want to not make mistake. The Rangers NEED to capitalize on this. They really need to get a lead and maintain it for a while so they can get into that groove. PP needs to deliver as well because you know they’re not going to get a million chances.

I'm still waiting for Ray Ferraro to say something good about the Rangers.

i don't get the hate for ferraro, he's complementary of both teams. i heard a ton of good things about the rangers, especially when they deserved to be complemented through the 2nd and 3rd. i was at the game but watched some chunks of the 2nd and 3rd today to see how it looked from that perspective and he had some effusive praise for mika, igor, kreider, schneider, fox, tarasenko individually and the way the rangers played that i remember. he's not everybody's cup of tea and not the best i've heard but the narrative that he hates the rangers or never says anything positive about them doesn't hold water.

I definitely agree with you on that, your guys needs to be the guy and needs to be able to start potentially 20 straight games in the spring. That’s infinitely harder for a goalie who never played more than 2-3 in a row during the season.

I think it “works” in the regular season in the sense that a good team can get by in the regular season with it just fine as long as both goalies are good just bc of the nature of the regular season. But if you want your goalie to be a difference maker in the playoffs he needs to have the ability to handle that workload and excel.

Did you catch Sean McDonagh's comment that Schneider hadn't scored since January right before he scored that goal? He pulled a Sam Special. I was laughing my ass off. Edited to add: Ferraro was laughing at that too.

Ray was one of my favorite hockey personalities & color guys until he got paired with McDonagh. I don't know if they've been fed an agenda from the league & ESPN, or if he's feeding off McDonagh's inferior hockey knowledge, but the two of them together have been a horrid combination. Add in Emily Kaplan, plus PK during intermissions & you have an entire broadcast that's more enjoyable with no sound.

Game 1 is the blueprint for me, with Game 2’s execution. Score early and take their crowd out of it and have them trailing from the jump. The Devils are night and day trailing vs leading in this series. They start trailing and it opens them up, even if just a little bit. They get a lead and their crowd explodes and they feed on that and go pedal to the metal. We need to play with the lead, ideally scoring relatively early on.

Their team is young, their goalie is young. We need to exploit that. You can’t let them get confident and comfortable.

Noticed after Mika scored he skated by the bench and high fived everybody with his left hand. Then they showed him on the bench and he was holding the water bottle with his left. That blocked shot he took off the right hand must have been bad.

yea i noticed the way he went down the handshake line too and was watching him on the bench after he took the puck off of it - was doubled over for a while and had me worrying then. he was able to shoot just fine and didn't notice any issues handling the puck in terms of battling, taking passes etc the rest of the game at least...not ideal to see it sticking with him throughout the game out of play but at least didn't seem to have any effect during play. hopefully it's nothing that sticks around, really not ideal to numb up a guys hand...esp one you want handling and shooting the puck.
