You know the Rangers won 5-1, right?

What is that to say?

Once the games get tighter and opponents better and deeper, Kane might turn from a non factor to a liability. So yeah, we might get the Debbies one man down, but against the Broons f.ex., he better show up, because they will expose and take advantage of him.

He looked slow and was a turnover machine, I think he was brought for more than just PP time and he didn’t really give it.

I think he’s cooked. Unless he’s far more injured than reported.
Far more injured? His injury has been talked about for like 5 months at this point and has always been referred to as significant with Friedman and others mentioning Kane may shut himself down earlier in the season and get surgery and if not he will need surgery when the season is over. Playing on something that requires surgery for like 5 months of the season at this point is absolutely significant, idk where it was reported that it was anything but a significant injury.

Need to find the right medicine combo to have him feeling better and just give him slightly more burst because it's his first step that's not giving him that separation he's so accustomed to.

Even still, he's a support player he's not the engine driver here. He was good on the PP, having him as a threat on the opposite side is giving them new looks and is opening space in the front of the net because they can't cheat back to Kreider or up to the bumper because they have to respect a shooting threat from Kane too. Almost had a goal in the 3rd on a back door play at 5v5 too.

All that said I still don't think Kane was as bad as everyone is saying. He wasn't great or anything but I thought he had a few hard back checks and aside from a few turnovers he was fine. We need better but it's not worth overreacting to, especially because he's not being counted on here to drive the ship.

Patrick Kane is going to make some big big plays during this run. Zero doubt in my mind.

Not his best night but thought he got better in the second half of it.

Chytil by the way quietly had a great night.

Again only weakness really is Schneider. They have to probably cut down on his ice time. 17 mins way to much but that was indicative of the score more than anything. Everyone should be pretty fresh for game 2. Nobody played heavy mins or got touched by the devils. That was as easy a win as we’ve had all year.
last year schneider was far and away the 5th best d man on the team during the run, mikkola's presence here to lengthen the depth on the backend cannot be over stated.

Is it unique in how the Rangers deploy their #1D and #1C vs how other teams do it? I feel like there are very few players getting top ES time against the best competition, #1PP AND #1PK unit. We really lean on those 2 to do everything for us.
Mostly, yes.

There are some centers who do everything. Kopitar is right at the top of the list. Bergeron, although his scoring has dropped off a bit. Hughes is certainly the "scoring" center for the Devils but Hishcier scores a lot for a guy playing a matchup role. Tampa is a weird one. Both Cirelli and Point face elite competition, which means Cooper is moving heaven and earth to shelter his 3rd and 4th lines.

It's way more unique on defense. It's actually mostly second pairs that hit the competition bong particularly hard. Cooper brought that into vogue. Let McDonagh and Cernak hang on against the stars so Hedman could absolutely dominate. Doughty and Spurgeon are the other #1 defenseman getting huge competition but they don't have 70+ points to show for it. Spurgeon is low-key just as good as Doughty but he's like 5'5" so nobody notices.

Side note: you know who low-key faces really, really tough competition? Vladimir Tarasenko.

It's pretty annoying when the only reaction to a 5-1 win is to point out a negative and mention nothing else.

I really believe that the way tank plays, the little pieces and battle that he has to his game is rubbing off on bread in some ways. they are both russian, both very skilled scorers who do it differently, but when bread watches someone like tank add that little grit and commitment to his game that doesnt

The two played together in juniors in Russia, they know each other well.

No question there was a big lift of morale once Tara got here.

Good post...shows that Cooper knows his team has lost some depth and he adjusts his player usage accordingly. And this is why I thought losing McD would be so crucial for Tampa...don't think Sergachev can fill the same role at all.

I really wish we could re-sign Vlad. He's been great for us.

I don't care for how hockey is coached in general as you guys know (mostly to do with leaning too much on "things and stuff" players who are just not good) but Cooper is a good coach. He's ushered in some unique deployment in this league and downright bad players tend to not make their lineup.

Here's a hot one: I hate Gallant's lines and I'll continue to complain about some of his decisions there, but in-game, I think he's done a good job with this group. We've played well in the playoffs and we seem to have a plan to get the most out of our strengths. Our "against" analytics have improved dramatically despite having some very questionable defensive players on the roster. We've been a bit more mucky and "boring" at times this year and I think that fits what we have on the roster. We're not an unskilled team, but we are a slow and heavy team. The cycle game is night and day versus Quinn and AV.

I like Vlad. I agree with the assessment that for a star player, he's not shy. He gets hard minutes and embraces them.

Well, yeah kinda, but I don't think this chart is score-adjusted.

Teams that are up 3+ goals tend to just chuck the puck and turtle, and it isn't the wrong thing to do.

We had the xG edge in the first period when the game was close.
Yeah, while I'd rather see the Rangers keep the pressure on to prevent NJ from being able to attack as much, I also think the game played out pretty much how the Rangers wanted. They weren't so much forced into turtling and back on their heels as they got the lead and let the Devils play into their gameplan, which to me very obviously included ways to disrupt the way the Devils carry the puck and try to generate offense.

I think Miller and Trouba had trouble because they struggled to break the puck out well for whatever reason...too much whacking the puck around the boards or holding on to long or not seeing where teammates were, not sure.

It's also games like this that to me show why Fox is in the top tier elite defensemen in the league and should win more than one Norris in his career. Hamilton had 2 more points this season than Fox but he just in no way dominates a game the way Fox does.

Yeah Gallant can be an absolute idiot with his lines but I agree - there are many worse coaches out there. Wish we had Cooper, but we can't. Drury did slowly take away GG's toys and got him better players who he has to play instead. So credit to Drury for that.

The Rangers were surprisingly quite structured defensively last night. Great to see.

Vlad is low-key a very physical player who's not afraid to muck it up in the trenches if need be. Love his game.

I didn't say they don't deserve it.

But they have to be better.
They just have to win. There is no analytical stats cup.

PP/PK and Igor were great. That is literally the formula in THIS matchup for us to win. We took away a lot of their speed advantage, and didn't give their stars the ability to do whatever they wanted. We also balanced minutes while they are going to skate Hughes into the ground. If we give this EXACT effort, we should win this series. If we get to Boston eventually, they have to be better.
