I tend to think Trouba is the problem in that pair but who's making it any better? And even if you put Fox with Miller then Trouba is playing with Lindgren which I can't see being better.

There's no coaching your way out of it. We have bad players in too big a role.

You have to try it at some point, though, no?

And kidnap Trouba's wife until he waives in the offseason.

They just have to win. There is no analytical stats cup.

What I'm suggesting (and afraid of) is that the Devils aren't going to go 0-fer on the PP every night and we won't get 2 PP goals every night. If we aren't better at 5v5 we may not win.

I get that the 5v5 analytics aren't score adjusted but they were skating circles around us when that game was 2-0 and still very much within the Devils' reach. I saw them get rolling on us numerous times this regular season and it was probably on track to happen again if Igor wasn't in god mode.

In the first 2 periods they werent skating circles around us.
They were getting pinned in their zone, and getting one chance, vs like a solid 30 seconds of zone time for us.
We wore them down.

Is this the NEW TEMPLATE? Or is it the old one, or the one that was before?
Technically is a shooting formation, where Panarin plays above the circle opposite Kane, Fox is the point man, and you get Z and Kreids down low. It just doesn't allow the opposition to play that diamond formation on the kill, and most PPs today have to defend the 1-3-1.

Was really nervous going into the first game. I didn't like how the Rangers have played against this Devils team all season. I felt like for whatever reason the Devs have them on their heels and they just don't respond well. Despite taking an early penalty in the early minutes of the game, the killed it off and scored the first goal. That was the start they needed.

The rest of the first period went super well for them. The killed off 2 penalties. One of which I didn't think was even a penalty. The Timo Meier high stick called on Schneider. They scored on the PP, and made the Devs pay on the makeup call. They also missed a few calls.

With that said, i still felt like the Devils had the momentum for a lot of the game. Igor took over, and he was a beast last night. I think that got in the Devs heads. He made some really nice saves.

Fox was on another level last night. That was some real Norris shit we witnessed last night. Offensively and defensively. Had more hits then any dman, cept for Trouba. He also blocked more shots then any other player on both clubs. Then of course, there were the 4 assists he put up.

Good

Rangers took game 1

The shot blocking was excellent last night for the Rangers.

Chytil had a very strong night. Goal and an assist and was 76.9% in the faceoff circle!!!

Goodrow was in playoff mode

Ryan Lindgren scores the prettiest goal of the night, shortside on a Pat Kane like snipe!

Kreider was a beast in front of the net.

Rangers shut down the Hischier line. He was a -3 on the night.

Mikkola didn't screen Igor all night.

The kid line put up a strong performance.

All of the Rangers top producers put up points cept for Mika.

Bad

Not 1 single NYR player hit Hughes all night long. Not 1. The only player to knock him down was his own man Dougie Hamilton. I felt like for the Rangers to win this series, playing Hughes with more of an edge needed to happen. They got amazing results, so i hope im wrong here, but I fear if they don't knock him around he's going to take over games.

46 Shot attempts, by a team that has some real solid goal scorers. Can't expect 23 blocked shots a night from this team. Over the last 5 games the Rangers blocked an average of 12 shots per game. Can they sustain 23 shot blocks per game?

K'Andre has to play better, smarter, and a more physical brand of hockey in the Playoffs. The pass to Tarasenko in the offensive zone with Hughes right behind him, on his blindside was like a mistake that players in Jrs would make. In a closer game that could have been a disaster, and unfortunatley it likely caused Igor the shutout. Miller is bigger, and physically one of the strongest players on the ice. He's a freak of an Athlete, but he needs to impose that will on the opposition. He is still among my favorite players on the club, but need to see more.

Officiating was subpar. During the playoffs this is unacceptable. High stick on Miller completely missed. Should have been 4 mins. High stick on Igor was compltley missed. Forget the 3rd call i was yelling at the TV about, but it wasn't called evenly. Lastly, Penalty shot was rediculous. That was a penalty. It should have never been a penalty shot.

Kane registered a point but did seem a bit disengaged last night. Had a bad giveaway again. He's been a playoff Monster for so long, im hoping he shakes off the rust and is a larger factor.

They sure were in the second period.

We came out and got a quick 2-0 lead and maybe that caused us to sit back and turtle, but that's a bad idea if it's what we did.

And if it's not what we did, then it's even more concerning.

And credit to the coaching staff for mixing up the PK. Forwards collapsing down low seemed to give the Devils fits all night.

Don't really understand why GG flipped the top 2 centers for seamingly no reason. Seems like a bad idea to have our #1 matchup C Mika be tasked with babysitting Kane on top of his other commitments. Mika with Vlad and Bread was fine.

The 4th line was a menace last night. They were winning shifts against the Devils top line, killing penalties like mad men, and stirring the pot. Thats going to go a long way for this team.
Just wait until we unleash Jimmy....

The flip side is that we really didn't play our best game and still won 5-1. Thats what this team has done for 2 years now - use their elite goaltending and PP to win games they weren't overly good in. The Devils aren't going to be better than us at 5v5 every game either

Patrick Kane is going to make some big big plays during this run. Zero doubt in my mind.

Not his best night but thought he got better in the second half of it.

Chytil by the way quietly had a great night.

Again only weakness really is Schneider. They have to probably cut down on his ice time. 17 mins way to much but that was indicative of the score more than anything. Everyone should be pretty fresh for game 2. Nobody played heavy mins or got touched by the devils. That was as easy a win as we’ve had all year.
Disagree on 4..he was engaged and was going into the tough areas and clearing the puck..still can do better but overall not too bad

You really should be a Hurricanes fan. You can win the analytics battle every night with shots from the point and talk about how as long as they stick to THE PROCESS they will be a multiple cup-winning dynasty.

They made that change games ago in the regular season and it had been working well.

Very true, but that's why I said "we have to be better." That is a silver lining, we can be better.

At the same time this is now something of a trend. We struggle containing New Jersey's offense and they've taken over the games for long stretches with consistency against us this year.

It's just concerning, that's all. Goaltending edge really won that game for us last night, Igor stopped everything, Vanicek let in some softies. Unfortunately that is how we may have to win this series, if we are going to, until we get to a better on-ice matchup next round vs. Carolina.

No thanks.

Yes I know they made it a while ago. Just saying that I really don't think it was necessary. And now that it's playoff time and the games are ramping up and they're not meaningless coasting games, we shouldn't be asking Mika to babysit Kane.

seriously. Theres a reason the hurricanes haven't gotten past the second round.

Who is talking about the Hurricanes?

The Rangers have to play better moving forward in this round against the Devils to win it.

Ironically I think we can (and will?) dispatch Carolina relatively easily this year.

That was a 5-0 spanking. Zero weight should be given to any analytics after Lindgren's goal. Zero. The Devils had a 0.0% chance of beating Igor 4 times, and they only beat him on a gift of a penalty shot. From the 37th minute on, the only thing that mattered was getting out of the game healthy and managing minutes, hence why the highest TOI was Miller at 21:20 last night.

But please, tell us more about how many shots and shot attempts the Devils had in the 3rd and how we can't play that way for every game the rest of the playoffs...it's so worrisome!

No thanks.

Even if you look at the stats, they were pretty well contained.

Rangers roasted them on the PP, the Devils did jack shit there. If THAT trend continues, this series is going to be a cakewalk.

Usually, the team that has the early lead does more defending. I wouldn't really worry about that too much. In the regular season, early leads in this series resulted in losses. We held it.
