Even if you look at the stats, they were pretty well contained.

Rangers roasted them on the PP, the Devils did jack shit there. If THAT trend continues, this series is going to be a cakewalk.

I doubt the special teams discrepancy continues to the degree it was in game 1 (2 goals to zero.... shots).

If it does you are certainly correct, but.... those things tend to even out a bit.

Usually, the team that has the early lead does more defending. I wouldn't really worry about that too much. In the regular season, early leads in this series resulted in losses. We held it.

Yeah, and I said, I know the xGF charts we are seeing here aren't score adjusted.

I'm just saying... the charts being bad is one thing... the eye test also tells me that we were up only 2-0 at a point in the game we should not have been turtling, but the Devils had the ice tilted our way most of the second period. One lucky bounce or two and they could have broken that game open quickly.

Of course part of that is the ebb and flow of a hockey game but I never saw us really re-tilt it the other way. That is what I want to see.

Well the zero shots thing, yeah thats probably isn't happening again.

The goal discrepancy? Absolutely could be a thing. Take a look at the Carolina series last year.

I thought the 2nd half of the 2nd period was at minimum "even". The 3rd was a bunch of nothing, they had the game in the bag and the Devils kind of just faded out.

The first 10 minutes of the 2nd period was all NJD. But as I said earlier, it was more Carolina-like than NJD-like: lots of possession, less threats. I thought they played the rush pretty well. NYR aren't a fast team; they will be "outworked" when it comes to the forecheck, they will be beaten in foot races. They can't skate the puck out, and the D can barely clear it. But their positioning was overall pretty good, PK was perfect, Igor was great (IMO), and they got goals from folks who should be scoring and even a surprise with Lindy. NYR is not going to all of a sudden FIX the problems they have in terms of team make up during the playoffs.

This year could be 2014 but with actual scoring talent.

We've talked about this before, but there's underappreciated value in winning series in less than 6-7 games. I don't mean this to come off as arrogant- these two teams aren't miles apart in terms of ability- just that all else equal I think how many of our deep playoff runs over the past 15 years have involved long series (And often draining comebacks from 3-2, 3-1 down) has really hurt us come rounds 3-4.

Ever game matters, and every loss is a waste.

Bottom6 established the forecheck.

Pretty quiet game from Trocheck, I do not know if he 'dialed it down' after taking a penalty early. But that line has shown it could forecheck well and take over games. Expect a much better game2.

At this point, we have to accept, Zibs line will most likely be a rush line. It would help so much, especially for his defensive matchups, if he could sustain o-zone time/cycling... This is why I see Kakko ultimately being his other winger moving forward... It just makes too much sense.

If 3 of the 4 lines can get the puck deep and establish a forecheck, I love our chances. I'm talking about a deeeeep run. The elephant in the room is that we are terrible moving the puck out of our zone. Yes, we only have Fox as a reliable puck mover, but even he struggles sometimes because there's literally no outlet. There's no options. Banging it off the glass is option 1, 2 and 3. It's just a terrible system/structure in that regard. We win faceoffs in the defensive zone and just instantly give up possession because we have no plan in place to possibly move the puck out. It's just horrendous for a NHL team in 2023. There's no way around it. We keep talking about it because it's our achilles heel.

For as good as we are/have been, we become death, a destroyer of worlds, if we ever learn how to move the puck as a team.

BTW it's actually fun again watching a 4th line that is competent and plays together. Vesey I thought was very active and engaged last night. Goodrow was on his toes and what else can you say about the guy sacrificing at every step (stuff you don't see on the scoresheet)?!?!

At a certain point, are we just going to run Kane on the PP and sit him ES? Because he looks like complete ass anytime he has the puck in the defensive/neatural zone. He's so scared to get hit and usually just tries to get rid of the puck as fast as he can. Clearly his injury is worse than we thought.
He’s skating like Most Valuable Primate. He looks extremely stiff, slow and uncomfortable

That was a 5-0 spanking. Zero weight should be given to any analytics after Lindgren's goal. Zero. The Devils had a 0.0% chance of beating Igor 4 times, and they only beat him on a gift of a penalty shot. From the 37th minute on, the only thing that mattered was getting out of the game healthy and managing minutes, hence why the highest TOI was Miller at 21:20 last night.

But please, tell us more about how many shots and shot attempts the Devils had in the 3rd and how we can't play that way for every game the rest of the playoffs...it's so worrisome!
This. It's like some don't actually watch hockey. Good teams that are down 2 or 3 goals are going to push. It's that simple. The Devils are going to get their looks in a game. The Rangers had a great game plan and executed it. Play physical, forecheck, limit their space, win special teams, goaltending.

No no, you see - the Rangers should never allow any chances or shots or else they suck.

Do people watch other teams' games? There's always back and forth action with both teams getting chances in the playoffs unless there's a complete mismatch like last year's COL-NAS series, and even that one needed OT for some games.

The playoffs are a learning experience for teams that haven't been there in a while. We were down 3-1 to a kind of old but battle tested Pens team last year before things clicked in. That might be the deal with the Devils right now. For a lot of their players things still have to click.....but another thing is they're not playing an older team like the Penguins were last year. We have a lot of youth too and ours have been through all the shit from last year. The only guy we have that might be a bit broken down is Kane.....maybe Halak (but he's going to sit mostly unless something happens to Igor and if that happens we're f***ed anyway).

Still the Devils are very much an up and coming team. Very good already. I look at them as a real challenge and to be honest I think who we might get in the second round (should we get there) might be easier for us to handle. Can't take the Devils for granted. It's one game. We need to win three more.

Theyre also a much smaller team than we were last year.

Of our D last night I think Schneider was the weakest link. That said he was still pretty okay. Mikkola helped him out a lot too. Our defense was a key part of our winning the game last night. But anyway Mikkola ain't fancy.....he's not going to put up a lot of points but so far he's played really well for us. His size, his skating, his physical play, his compete. He's very much an upgrade over Braun last year. A tough player to play against.

Exactly. The Rangers played really well but the Devils are good and they are going to get their chances in a 60 minute game. It's hockey 101. This series ultimately will be determined by special teams and goaltending like so many other playoff series. My money is on the Rangers.

A lot of small and speedy guys. Got to be able to win grind games in the playoffs. Meier is kind of built like Tarasenko and Hischier isn't that small either. Palat's been through a lot of wars. Great two way player though he ended up -3 last night.
