Kane was always going to be a wild card. We rolled the dice on him with minimal risk.

The key I think will be trying to limit his minutes, and maximize his usefulness. Having one of our 4th line spot him for a shift or two at even strength probably wouldn't kill either player involved. I;d shift Vesey and Goodrow in once a period to keep him fresh.
We just need his clutch gene when called upon

Stepped away for a bit to go make dosa batter. Coming back with a little bit more space and having reflected on the game some more, it's just unreal how much Adam Fox dominated that game.
What’s going on the dosa? I haven’t had good dosa in too long. My mother in law makes it perfectly.

I’ve been giving him a long leash, waiting for the playoffs to start. Weird game tonight, so I will again delay judgment on him.

That said, if this is who he is now, it will surely have been a mistake to not have either saved those assets or used them on a younger player who can forecheck and make life difficult for the opposing defense.

They're also not really big enough to play that type of game. Aside from Meier their forwards are small.
Yup. That’s in part what I was trying to say by saying they were making it worse trying to push back. Wearing themselves down more.

Hard to tell if it's due to Kane declining, or the hip injury. Probably a bit of both.

We set the tone early, and the Devils just couldn't handle it. We took away their time and space and they were lost, without a clue on how to go forward. And that was kind of surprising. Generally, a team has some kind of push back. But when we neutralized their speed game by getting in their face, they had no answer for it. It was only when we took our foot off the gas, early in the second, that they looked like a contending team. But soon after, we went back to attacking, pressuring and closing gaps, leaving them lost once again.

This can be a short series if the Devils don't find a way to handle playoff type hockey.
Exactly.

It's important to close out these series early if we're looking for a long run.

We ran out of gas against Tampa. Tampa ran out of gas against Colorado. Being fresh is a massive advantage
I thought the same thing but the numbers don't back it up.

This game was a pants pull down spanking from start to finish from a team that's been there before to a team that hasn't.

Devils won't be as bad as they were tonight but if we continue to play physical against them and block shots like we did tonight this will be a quick series

I'll probably make coconut or peanut chutney. This is really a test batch to confirm that I still know how to make them since it's been a while and I'm supposed to cook for dinner guests sometime soonish.

quick thoughts Rangers V Devils

Devils weren't ready to play playoff hockey...it's a weird distinction but even though I'm sure they thought they were, they didn't really have the mindset you could see the Rangers had. In addition, a lot of their chances and offense coming off the rush comes from having to make exceptional individual plays a lot of the time, and while they certainly have the players to do that, it's just hard to rely on that over and over and over in the playoffs. They also got a bit unlucky, missed some good chances, Shesterkin made some good timely saves, Vanecek was a bit shaky.
Even though they got that PS goal, they didn't score at 5v5 and their PP was bad and they've gotta have some frustration that creeps in there. They weren't technically shutout but again, didn't muster a 5v5 goal.

On the Rangers end, I felt like they were playing with fire a bit by playing a more methodical game but if you're going to do it against the Devils, that's how you do it. Forwards came back to help out the D, not a lot of really egregious turnovers, their gaps were pretty good and they closed quick on players, and took the body every chance they could. Hischier seemed like he got knocked around a lot. They took advantage of their chances and stayed with their gameplan and made it work. Whether they can keep that going another game, we'll see. It might just take the Devils getting a goal or a bounce their way to get things scrambling on the Rangers end.
Shesterkin was real good but didn't exactly have to carry them, just come up with big saves when needed. 3rd and 4th lines were good, Panarin was actually great I thought, moving his legs and doing a lot. Tarasenko and Trocheck worked hard but seemed a step behind Panarin at times. Zibanejad's line was bad...Kane was outright horrible and the only time he looked like he had some life was that powerplay in the 3rd and then their line got a little bit going.
Seemed like the Devils were definitely targeting the Rangers third pair and they were hanging on by the skin of their teeth at times.

Fox was amazing. Not much you can say about that performance other than wow.

Good win, I wish they'd got the attack going better but at least if they were playing the patient and methodical game they did it well.

I've heard of the "Blueshirts off our backs" night, but this one is new to me...

He was trying to play 1 on 5 like McDavid most of the game. Not gonna work fella
To be honest he's skilled enough to get some points doing that and maybe turn a game, but...yeah the biggest problem (at least for this game) was the Devils rush offense in particular is built on those guys making exceptional plays over and over and the Rangers were ready to take away space and collapse and had the forwards coming back. A guy would think he had a D beat or at least space to move the puck and another Ranger would be there. Rangers took away space pretty well tonight and the Devils tried to dipsy doodle a whole lot at times and turned it over a lot.

Still, if they get it rolling with that kinda stuff it can turn rough real fast.

At a certain point, are we just going to run Kane on the PP and sit him ES? Because he looks like complete ass anytime he has the puck in the defensive/neatural zone. He's so scared to get hit and usually just tries to get rid of the puck as fast as he can. Clearly his injury is worse than we thought.
